Gulo Gulo Review

Gulo Gulo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gulo Gulo is the genus and species name of the wolverine, a rapacious beast. In this game, your wolverine is dying to eat the vulture's eggs. Not wanting to lose her brood, the vulture has set an up an alarm to tip her off to clumsy wolverines. In addition, she's kidnapped and hidden the baby wolverine.
Which brave wolverine will rescue that little guy?
THE COMPONENTS
Rio Grande Games doesn't make chintzy products. This game is beautifully made, even down to the sturdiness of the cardboard box! The vulture's nest is a carved wood bowl filled with wooden eggs in five sizes and colors. The board is a randomly assigned set of thick, two-sided octagonal tiles: one side with grass, the other with wolverines clutching an egg that corresponds to the egg colors. Wolverine player pieces in six colors accompany the set, and even those are painted in just the right places.
PLAYING THE GAME
The playing board tiles are arranged randomly, grass side up, leading to the vulture's nest. (The random element means no two games play exactly the same--nice.) A set of five tiles, also grass side up, is placed as the last set before the vulture's nest. An egg atop a slender stick--the egg alarm--is inserted vertically between the eggs in the nest.
The hungriest player goes first, turning over the first tile, revealing a wolverine clutching a colored egg. The player must then grab the corresponding colored egg from the nest without toppling the egg alarm to the playing surface. If successful, the player can move atop that tile. Subsequent players can elect to turn over the next hidden tile or simply move to a tile already turned. (That latter strategy can be based on the state of the eggs in the nest.) A player who fully topples the egg alarm must move back to the previous tile that represents the color of egg whose attempted removal set off the alarm. The eggs and alarm are then reset.
On reaching the final pile of tiles, a player removes one tile on the pile and its corresponding egg (without setting off the alarm) until the baby wolverine tile is uncovered. A player must then successfully remove one of the two purple eggs in the nest to win the game.
PROS:
* Well-made and durable game components.
* Random game tile placements changes the play each game.
* Good blend of play options for both aggressive and cautious players.
* Players who makes a mistake (or even several) are rarely left out of the endgame.
* Because little fingers can more deftly remove the small eggs, kids can beat their parents.
* Though a children's game, adults will definitely enjoy playing.
* Clever game play mixes strategy with dexterity.
* To prevent setting off the alarm when removing eggs, anxious and boisterous kids must still themselves and concentrate--a good skill to learn.
*Once played, the game is simple to later explain to others.
CONS:
* Cost is a bit steep compared with most children's games of this type, but that's almost a spurious con considering the quality of the components.
* At eight pages, the instruction book is daunting on first glance, but it contains instructions in three languages.
* In the beginning, the rules may seem complex, but running through one game will prove how easy it is to play.My son loves playing this game and so do my wife and I. Outstanding quality, excellent design, a changeable board, and easily explained rules make every aspect of this game top-notch. Even if you've never heard of it until now, you won't regret purchasing Gulo Gulo.

The wolverine Gulo Gulo is always hungry, especially when near a nest of fresh eggs. Young wolverines love swamp eggs just as much as adults, but are not as careful. Thus, junior is caught and the family has to rescue him, while getting eggs for themselves! Whoever can move along the path the fastest will collect the most eggs and rescue junior!

Kids of Catan Review

Kids of Catan
Average Reviews:

I have never written a negative review before, but tonight, after trying to play this game again I'm driven to write this.
I purchased this game based on a game seller's high recommendation and great description, the quality of the wooden pieces and the reputation of the Catan games, but we have been totally disappointed.
The game itself has a sweet concept, but it's boring - truly a Candyland level game just with a more eco/green bent (and easier to win) so my kids basically ignore it unless I get it out and insist they play.
My main complaint (besides the HIGH price) is that you can not play the game with small kids without knocking over the pieces (several to many many times a game). The pieces are placed around the outside and on top of a cardboard "spinner". It can be hard for adults or big kids to get their hand in to spin without knocking them over, much less an enthusiastic 3-5 year old. The pieces' "seats" (the indented area where you place the pieces) are not very deep, so even the slightest touch of a finger or slight knee on the box topples them. It's like you're involved in some kind of bad ergonomics experiment...
Save your $ and buy Hiss or Trouble and have lots more fun.

Each player has a set of buildings to place. Placing a building uses a whole wagon load of resources: 1 each of wood, bricks, and wheat. The roll of the die determines how far the wagons will move. When any child stops beside a resource that they need, they can load the resource into their wagon. When your wagon is full, you get to build a new house! The house must be placed in the right spot in the village. Then the resources are returned to the board so they can be collected again! After you build all your houses, you begin collecting resources again to build the Town Hall. The player who builds the Town Hall wins the game!

I have twin four year old girls. They love this game. It is easy enough for them to play by themselves or with grownups. It is a great combination of a matching game and a review of great books by Dr. Seuss. Being a school librarian, I love the game for its exposure to the great literature of Dr. Seuss.

Apples to Apples Kids Review

This is the best game!! My husband and I have as much fun as the children when we play. My son, who is an early reader, could play this at an earlier age than that recommended on the box. When only three of us want to play, we use a stuffed animal for the fourth player; the children think it's a riot to see the answers the animal "gives." (We select a card from the animal's five choices without looking at it, and the children think it's so funny when, for example, the animal chooses "cotton candy" as something that is scary. This game is one of those games that is both educational and REALLY fun to play. I HIGHLY recommend that you buy this game. We have all three versions! (There are two children's versions - one for younger and one for older children, and an adult's version.)

It's as easy as comparing apples to apples ... just open the box, deal the cards, and you're ready for instant family fun! Select the card from your hand that you think is most like the card played by the judge. If the judge picks your card, you win that round. And, everyone gets a chance to be the judge! For example, if the judge picks Loud, which card from your hand would you choose to describe it best: Parties, Big Bird, My Mom, or Doing the Dishes? Laugh out loud as your hilarious comparisons are revealed. Includes 216 Red Apple cards, 72 Green Apple cards, 1 card tray, and instructions. For 4 to 10 players.

CRIBBAGE BOARD - THREE TRACK Review

CRIBBAGE BOARD - THREE TRACK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is exactly as pictured and exactly what we wanted. There are no surprises here. It is what it is. It is rather large and not as easy to pack away or take along somewhere as a smaller board would be, but given its configuration you wouldn't want it much smaller. It would be too cramped.
I was taught cribbage as a kid using a traditional "up-and-back-and-up-and back-again" board and I'm fine with that. My daughter, however, loses track of whether we're on the first "up-and-back" or the second one. She prefers this format where she can see the game as one contiuous progression from beginning to end. This board is just what she wanted and we've played many an enjoyable game using it.

Kids of Carcassonne Review

Kids of Carcassonne
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great game for little kids. The game consists of tiles with parts of several paths on them. Some paths end and others are open. You match up path tiles and try to put end points to close off a path. If your character's color is in a path that's closed, you place a wood token there. The player with the most wood tokens when all the tiles are done wins. It's that easy! It's a richer version of "pipe" or "snake" games where you build the pieces.
The tiles are sturdy, easy to place, and beautifully illustrated in rich illustrations and bright colors. The person tokens are made of thick wood and the entire set is made from very obviously quality materials - no plastic anywhere! There are no dice, spinners, or any type of counting needed for the game - each player takes turn placing tiles and trying to close off the paths on which their characters are sitting. The strategy is easy here so this is great for families with children of multiple ages.
This is a quality game and we received it as a wonderful gift. It's one of those wonderful gifts that families can enjoy playing together.

On 14 July, the national holiday in France, the sheep, chickens and cows are set free in the town of carcassonne. The children have big fun to catch the animals before dusk. The players in turn draw a landscape tile and place it; unlike in normal carcassonne, they always match. Amongst other features, the tiles show children in the player colors on the roads. Whenever a road is finished, every player places one of his meeples on each appropriate picture. The first player who manages to place all of his meeples wins the game.

My Word Game Review

My Word Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought My Word! because of three reasons. One, I was an English teacher at the time, and thought it would be helpful in my classes. Also, it was produced by Out of the Box (2001), who makes some very fun, easy-to-learn games. Thirdly, it was designed by the great Reiner Knizia. So I bought this inexpensive game and tried it out with my classes, and with my friends.
The verdict? It was a great, great game in my classes. With my friends, however, it did not do so well. Some liked it, some didn't, but it hasn't been asked for since. Allow me to discuss the game a little more, starting with how it's played...
My Word consists only of a deck of fifty-six cards. It's also helpful to have a scrap of paper and pencil to track each player's score. The deck of cards is made up of thirty-nine cards that have one letter on them. The cards are divided into two, with the letter written on them from both directions, so that players on both sides of the table can easily read the card. Fourteen cards are similar, but have pairs of letters on them, such as "IT", or "SH". The remaining three cards have question marks on them - two with a single question mark, and one with two question marks. They are used as wild cards. One player is chosen to be the dealer, and then each player takes a turn after in clockwise order.
On a turn, the dealer takes deck of cards and shuffles it, then begins to place cards face up on the table. The dealer can place the cards anywhere they choose and at any speed they desire. As the dealer lays out cards, players search the cards to see if they can find any words amongst the letters on the table. Words must be formed from three or more cards, must be able to be found in a standard dictionary, and can be formed in any order. When a player sees a word, they must shout out the word. If the dealer hears the word, they pause the game and check to make sure the word is legal. If the word is legal, the player who shouted it out gets all the cards used to make the word. If the word is NOT legal, then every other player gets a free card from the table. The dealer can never call out words during his deal.
When the last card is dealt, the round immediately ends. Each player receives one point for every card they have gotten, and scores are noted on the paper. The next player becomes the dealer, and the game proceeds until every player has been the dealer once. Point totals are tallied, and whichever player has the most points is the winner!
Some comments on the game...
1). Components: All the game consists of is the deck of cards. The cards are of good quality, but since they are the only component in the game, I think they should have been of better quality (a minor quibble). The box with it's plastic insert is more than enough room to hold the cards and fits well on a shelf (it's the same size as all OOTB small games). One thing did nag at me when playing the game. The simple fact is that I could easily make this game. All one would have to do is make a deck of cards with letters on them. Of course, quality components are always a plus, there's just not much here.
2). Rules: As with every OOTB game, the rules are simple, short, and easy to learn and play. No matter what, I had each game I taught up and running in less than a minute.
3). English teaching: This game was superb for teaching children spelling games. And, unlike some educational games, there is a bit of fun in this one. I found this game a very useful tool in the classroom.
4). Fun factor: But while there may be a bit of fun, there's not a lot of fun. People who are slow spellers will absolutely hate this game. It requires a quick eye and fast spelling. At least Scrabble and Crossword Pyramids allow the player time to think. If a player is slowly thinking of a word to spell, and other players grab the letters first, it can be intensely frustrating to some. I enjoyed the game, but I was in a very distinct minority.
So, after this short review, I would have to say that I would recommend My Word! to those who like spelling games. If you have children who need to learn spelling, or are a teacher, this is also a fun, valuable teaching tool. But for game night? Sadly, I'll have to pass.
Tom Vasel

Chicken Cha Cha Cha Review

Chicken Cha Cha Cha
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Chicken Cha Cha Cha is kids' game that is even more fun as a family game and at least as fun at a grown-up games party.
Short-term memory is an important aspect of this game. Which is part of what makes it such a good family game. Considering whose memory is shorter term, it's very likely that they'll have at least as good a chance at winning as you.
The real fun of the game, however, comes from chasing each other around a board of thick, cardboard, egg-shape tiles. There are four wooden chickens (two are supposed to be roosters, but that's where the game begins to get abstract). Each of these chickens have appropriately located places where one can put tail feathers - wooden sticks topped by egg-shaped balls, each corresponding to a chicken color.
Then there are the thick, cardboard, octagonal tiles which are placed face-down, and surrounded by the egg track. The images on these tiles correspond to images on the eggs.
You place your wooden chicken with its one wooden tail feather anywhere on the egg track. When it's your turn, you first have to find the octagonal tile that matches the egg tile in front of your chicken. If you are correct, you move your chicken to that tile, and go again, trying to guess which octagon matches the egg tile that is now in front of you. You can play in teams, even - which makes it more fun, and more likely that your collective recollection might be good enough to find which octagon matches which egg tile.
If you get immediately behind someone else's chicken, and it's still your turn, you can, if you can identify the octagon tile that matches the egg tile that is in front of the opponent's chicken, jump over that chicken, and get his or her proverbial tail feather.
The first chicken with all four tail feathers wins.
Chicken chasing is great fun. It's as fun as playing tag or duck-duck-goose. And, as the game progresses, you remember (especially if you're young enough) more and more of the octagonal tiles, so you can run (or, as the game designers would want you to think of it, "cha cha") further and further. So the chase speeds up. And the tension increases. And sometimes you get so excited you forget where anything is. And sometimes you remember everything. And then you win.
Designed by Klaus Zoch, and graced by the endearing art of Doris Matthäus, Chicken Cha Cha Cha is a remarkably versatile, and engaging game, for a surprisingly wide range of ages. It's one of a relatively few games that kids can play as well as their parents can, that appeals to teens as much as pre-schoolers, that could find as much welcome in a games party for grown-ups as with the kids in the family room on a rainy afternoon.
Because the game is so elegant (there are really very rules) and so easily learned, it is also easily varied. If the game is too hard for some players, you can turn all the tiles over periodically for review. If it takes too long, you can have the chickens cha cha in opposite directions so they encounter each other more frequently. Since you make the board, you can always make it smaller, eliminating some eggs and their corresponding octagons as needed. You can even, if you're playing with people of my memory strengths, you might also consider increasing the number of guesses a player can make when octagon-hunting.
Chicken Cha Cha Cha - available in the US from Rio Grande Games. Not complex. Not profound. Most definitely Major FUN.

Purchased this product for a November 2009 birthday. The recipient was a four year old boy. It kept his attention and he enjoyed the competition. As a speech pathologist at Play on Words, I am always looking for good games to encourage language. Kids three years and up want a little challenge in their games--not everything left to chance! Diggity Dog is their first pick for fun. Choose your puppy and press the doghouse to listen for the number of barks. Count them out as you land on a space, dig a hole and the little bone sticks to your dog's magnetic nose. See if the color on the underside of the bone matches your dog and collect all three before heading home to win. There's just enough action to keep little hands busy and skill required to keep minds churning. Playing Diggity Dog involves auditory memory (remembering the number of barks), visual memory (remembering where your colored bones are), counting, and conversation negotiating turn-taking and discussing strategy. These are all skills that contribute to language development.

In this adorable first memory board game, kids help the puppies find their bones. Start by pressing on the electronic barking dog, and he will bark the number of spaces you move (1,2 or 3). When your puppy lands on a space beside a bone, he can pick it up using his magnetic nose. If the color of the bone matches your puppy, you get to move it to your doghouse. The first to find three matching bones wins.

Brain Quest Game Review

Brain Quest Game
Average Reviews:

Brain Quest is one of the board games we have played the most. This is because the whole family could play it, even though we were on all different intellectual levels. The adults, or grandparents generally chose the highest grade i.e. 6th. The younger ones went by their grade level or higher depending on the topic. It was suprising to see how much an adult had forgotten and did not know, this added to the fun and sharing experience of adults with children. The children learned in the process.
The drawback for many board games is that different age groups (from grade 1 - 6) cannot sit together and play the game, especially if it is dealing with general knowledge. Brain Quest overcomes that problem. Hence when we have other families with children visiting we pull out Brain Quest, since its rules are simple, and the grame is challenging. The first grader is as comfortable playing the game as the 6th grader and they can all play together! Also the game can be finished in one sitting. I am glad we have this game!

Zobmondo Entertainment The Ladybug Game Review

Zobmondo Entertainment The Ladybug Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This attractive, original, and educational game has provided a lot of fun for my two young sons. They enjoy getting their respective ladybugs past the bad praying mantis and the bully ants and back to their flowery home.
They've learned about ladybugs, aphids, ants, and praying mantises and they've gotten a lot of practice counting through the process of reading the cards and counting forwards and backwards on the board. Then there's the counting of aphids to give them even more practice with numbers.
But after playing this game five or six tims with my sons I found myself wishing they could just play against each other and leave me out of it. This is an open ended game which can go on for a long time. The cards basically contain numbers which move you forward and backward, forward and backward. Then there are instructions on some of the "squares" along the journey that have you moving backwards too. Furthermore, there is one place along your journey where you can get into a seemingly infinite loop going around and around trying to collect enough aphids to get past those bully ants.
As a parent who is obligated to play this game when the kids want to, I can say that it has gotten quite tedious, and when the kids want to play it I just wince. Still, it's not nearly as bad as Chutes and Ladders.
So, I recommend this as one of several games to cycle through over the course of days and weeks. If I had to play it every night, I'd just rather be eaten by the praying mantis.

Once upon a time in a beautiful rose garden there were four ladybug friends who flew among the leaves, exploring their sweet-smelling home. Although they loved the rosebushes, sometimes they wondered what lay beyond their world. Each ladybug had a different wing color: Ella Yellow, Rickie Red, Tommy Teal, and Olivia Orange. Everybody knows and loves ladybugs. Kids will fall in love with the characters and memorize the story of The Ladybug Adventure as they learn to count and read. The Ladybug Game uses a clever combination of colors, numbers, words, and symbols to help even the youngest kids catch on quickly. Soon they will be playing on their own, again and again, as they encounter all the adventures, challenges, and characters in the garden including the Praying Mantis, the Aphids, and the three lazy Ants.

Chutes and Ladders Review

Chutes and Ladders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We ordered Chutes and Ladders for our four year old. He enjoys the game, but there are a few things that we don't like.
1.The child needs to be able to visually recognize the numbers 1-100, so that they know where to move. If your child, like ours, can't do this yet it becomes frustrating with having always to tell them where to move. It feels like you are playing for them. So, we play lots more Candy Land that Chutes and Ladders. So, this game probably isn't good for preschool children - unless you are willing to give them considerable help (which means no games played among just the children themselves).
2.The game pieces are made of cardboard that fits into little plastic stands. After several times of putting the cardboard into the stand the cardboad becomes compressed and will no longer stay in the stand. So, you will need to try to leave the stands on all the time, or you'll have to glue the pieces into the stands. Considering how classic a game this is and that families will play it for generations and hand it down, it would have been nice if they could have come up with better pieces (like the nice plastic pieces in Candy Land's anniversary edition).
3.In the last row of game play there are three chutes with only a couple of spaces separating them, which makes it VERY difficult for anyone to win and the game to be over. This gets annoying after a while and frustrating to little people.
So, we like this game, but it isn't our favorite. Be aware of your child's ability to recognize numbers and handle game frustration.
