Shrek Operation Review

Shrek Operation

Got this for my 5 year old who found my old, original Operation game at my mom's house. Thought she would love this version since she loves the Shrek movies. She loves playing this game and it's fun for adults to play too. Don't think it's really an "educational" game, and most of it is cardboard so it could get beat up pretty quickly, but we are careful about putting it away in its box and keeping the pieces in little plastic bags so they don't get lost. All in all, it's just a fun game to play with your kids. There are few companies that make a Shrek Operation and you'll see some at outrageous prices. I think we paid around $15. I've never seen in a store for under $30.

Double Dare the Games Review

Double Dare the Games

This home game is based on a show not making new episodes at the time (I hope it is coming back though). If you don't know the trivia you have to do a Stunt/Physical challenge with these interesting puppet hands and this bib around your neck. You get 60 sec. and if you don't get it you'll get water all over your head. I think this is fun and really should be played with two teams of 2 and to make it even more fun with a host to read the questions. If there isn't a host then you basically have to quiz each other keeping in mind the rules. I especially like the format for the home game, but there is no obstacle course for the winner but you most of the time are forced to at least one physical challenge during the game. ALL physical challenges are one player though.
I found this game actually looks like someone took the time to make something that would break after playing it 2 or 3 times. I got mine just yesterday and found that after playing 5 games that this is a strong toy.
They could have done a better job to make it feel more Double Dare like (2 and 4 player physical challenges; requiring a host; an obstacle course; getting rid of that head piece that gets you wet; etc) but if you really want to recreate Double Dare and you can get a host, and 2 teams of 2 or 4, don't use this. Make up your own thing. I DO recommend this if you have only one sibling or friend that you can get to play this with you.
Enjoy

I think this is such a great game. The best part is you can roll the die as many times as you want so you could cross the whole board in one turn, just don't get the black star it ends your turn! I love bumping people in The Pit. The only thing is, all those Items you collect to help you are kind of useless and the game is usually won before anyone uses them. For the price, and with a group this is a great game. Easy to learn.

Battleship Board Game 1990 Edition Review

Battleship Board Game 1990 Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In production by Milton Bradley Company since 1931, "Battleship" is another board game with a military theme and one of the greatest ever created. It is, simply, the very best of its kind. You don't surpass this kind of simple genius, only match it if you can.
Many, many different editions and versions of "Battleship" have been made over the years, and many more have been made since this one. But 1990 will always be a special year for me in any field, whether it is the year of a car, book, or board game's production or anything else. This 1990 edition of the classic naval combat strategy came is the first version of "Battleship" that I ever played, and remains my favorite. The boards themselves are square and black, the arrangement of everything inside and out is straightforward and, in my mind, military. Both the upper and lower peg-hole boards are made of a clear blue plastic, that together with the blue paper set below them is meant to create the illusion of the grey miniature ships actually being on the ocean. Some newer editions have tried doing this with grey plastic that is part of the board, shaped somewhat like waves. Sure, those peg-hole boards don't fall off, but I kind of liked that aspect of the 1990 edition. The bloody boards could fall off if you weren't careful, and I noticed my set tended to do that a tad more as they grew older.
Among my favorite board games, this one is second only to "Risk". No collection of board games could ever be said to be complete without it.

We love this Diego edition of Chutes and Ladders. My son is four and he does a pretty good job following the directions.. the only befuddling part is a long standing function of chutes and ladders, moving back and forth (changing directions at each level) across the board. It confuses my poor little sprout every time, especially if he goes up a ladder and is suddenly going the same way he was before instead of the opposite, like he would if he hadn't hit a ladder. lol. In any event, it's super and the characters are adorable and the board is adorable.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Board Game Review

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Board Game

I got this for my almost 6 year old and he loves it. With 3 levels of play, he hasn't been bored yet (nor have I). Most of these liscensed games are pretty lame, but this one is different each time you play and he loves the "battles". It even teaches a little bit about strategy, math and teamwork! Now that can't be bad. It is durable enough that my 2 year old can help play (she rolls the dice for the bad guys). And at just under $6, it is an excellent birthday gift for the turtle lover on your list!!

i just received this game a few days ago and i love it. loved the muppets from when i was a little girl. i played it recently with my 81 year old grandpa and he kicked my 30 year butt! :)
then i played it with my cousins who are 10 (first time playing monopoly ever) and they picked it up very quickly. i gave them my plain old version! my only complaint is that the pieces look a lot alike. other than that... very cute.

Pachisi Travel Go Game Review

Pachisi Travel Go Game

A good little travel-sized game ... and as such, you would expect the small pieces to be a bit hard to handle in exchange for the small size of the game set. This is certainly true in this case.I would have thought that the game pieces could have been a bit more substantial; basically, they're small (magnetized) discs of cardboard. So, while it could be better, it's still not bad (and the only choice I've found for a travel sized pachisi game).

Hungry Hungry Hippos Review

Hungry Hungry Hippos
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Why is it that companies who decide to reissue classic games from the 50's, 60's and 70's seemingly ALWAYS do so using the cheapest of plastics? Gone are the days of thick precisely engineered plastics, strong metal supporting parts and ready-to-play-out-of-the-box sturdy construction. Instead, we get cheap inferior versions (Spirograph) and flimsy "assembly required" thin plastic versions that don't work properly (Hungry Hippos, Hands Down). C'mon folks, we're talking PLASTIC here...the stuff is plentiful and inexpensive: spend an extra 5 cents on the manufacturing end and give me a better product.
My beef with this toy is that it appears no one at the manufacturer bothered to play-test it. The lightweight plastic pellets go flying everywhere (you can't call 'em marbles anymore), the hippos get stuck or they fall off during play, and you can count on a plastic piece eventually breaking off or cracking, leaving you with crying children and extremely disappointed adults. (However, there IS satisfaction to be had after it breaks...go outside, place it in the driveway and stomp on it until it's reduced to nothing more than itty-bitty colored plastic pieces. Great for getting out the aggression this crappy toy provokes!)
Forget this rubbish, you're better off getting an original. Thank goodness for eBay, second-hand stores, and flea markets. Happy hunting!

Connect 4 Spongebob Edition Review

Connect 4 Spongebob Edition

So right away, Connect 4 is a great game and Spongebob Squarepants is a great character. The combination in this case works beautifully. They even have a new twist to the game. You can place blockers to stop your opponent from placing their pieces in certain rows. This really does add a new dimension to the game. This game is also helping teach my 6-year-old daughter about strategy in a way that no other game has managed to do. She's thinking ahead about where to place her chips and simultaneously playing offense and defense without even realizing it. It's the beginning of a multi-tasking brain! This is one of the few games I actually enjoy playing! This and rummy tiles. So yeah, my standards are high.

I bought this for my 6 year old nephew for Christmas. He really likes the game Trouble, and now loves this game, too! It took him a few turns to figure it out, but he got a hang of it and beat me.
The board is a little wobbly, it doesn't rest directly on the surface of the table, they have you put on these three disks which make the board seem a bit flimsy, especially since you have to pop the number bubble...
But, it's definitely a fun, good family game!

Battleship Review

Battleship
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a GenX, I grew up with Battleship and Electronic Battleship (cooler). Its a great game for young kids. 5 or 6 is about as young as you want to go on age. The kids have to learn both grid notation and also the transformation that their attack grid is an analog to my defense grip/ship grid and vice versa. It takes kids a little while to grasp this concept fully. The game is suspenseful and fun for kids.
The drawback with this version of Battleship is pretty common to a lot of products. The manufacturer has done a lot of cost reduction to the game since you saw the version you played on as a kid. There is a lightweight and cheap feel to it now. One example is the white/red pegs. They used to be large, about 2cm and solid. Now they are about 1/2 cm and hollow to save on plastic cost. Just one example, but you get the idea, everything about it has been spared down to the minimal possible costs. They even have the user apply the outside Battleship decal stickers to save on a few pennies of assembly cost. This sort of makes sense. They are selling the game based on nostalgia we all have for it that we want to pass on to our kids. This games sales driver is not word of mouth on high build quality or durability. Therefore, charge as much as possible and cut costs at every conceivable location. To this I would say to the manufacturer, shame on you guys.
A better bet would be to find an older battleship game with better quality on eBay or go dig up your old set from your parents basement. Those sets were built so well that they should still be fine.

When I read all of the bad reviews for this Gen X classic board game, I just laughed! Especially the review about the young child that played this game and got so nervous because of the buzzer that he/she threw up! Then... I wondered about the world we live in... Who would have thought that a simple game like Hasbro's Operation could make a person question the social decline of the next generation?
Firstly, Gen Y parents... This is a game for 6 to 12 year olds. it's called "reading the front of the box before you buy".
Secondly, the pieces and the cavities that the pieces fit in are the EXACT same size, made of the EXACT same plastic, and is an EXACT duplicate of the game board I owned in the 70's, so stop your GEN Y whining!
The object of the game is to practice, have a steady hand and beat your opponent. It ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE EASY! Just like the Gen Y's offspring is being taught today - if it's too difficult, too scary, too loud, too ANYTHING, then it's just OK to throw it down and give up. What a wimpy generation we soon will have running this country in 25 to 30 years.
I had three kids, ages 6 to 12 over to our house and got out this game for them to play with. I helped the 6 year old some but all three ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Obviously, they are the exception to the rule among the children being raised today...
Cavity Sam is the patient and you are pitted against your opponent with "doctor" cards that describe what part of the body to operate on and if successful, get paid. If your oppponent isn't successful, you get the next shot at the same body part but with a "specialist" card. Specialist, of course, get more money for operations than do doctors. If you touch the sides of the body cavity with the tweezers, Sam's nose lights up and a loud buzzer sounds. The person with the most money in completed operations wins!
This also teaches kids about body parts, reading, and to establish some great hand/eye coordination. Much more than, oh... let's say a Game Boy or an X Box would. Great family fun! Two "D" batteries not included...
Happy Playing!
