19.5 in Deluxe Crokinole Review

I purchased this board for my father for his birthday. My friends are from Canada and introduced us to Crokinole and we all thought it was very fun. Unfortunately this board is smaller than what we expected and the disks are too light. There also isn't enough room between the circle and the outer edge of the board to flick the discs effectively. The board looks really nice but was very disappointing. Unfortunately I'll probably wait for the next big holiday and buy my dad another board.

The earliest known board was made by craftsman, Eckhardt Wettlaufer in 1876 in Canada. Several other home-made boards of southwestern Ontario origin, and dating from the 1870s have been discovered since.Crokinole is often believed to be of Mennonite or Amish origins, but there is no evidence to support this. The name "Crokinole" is believed to derive from the term Croquet-in-the-hole, because of the style of game play that can be likened to playing croquet on a table with a hole as the hoop

I got inspired to get back into chess and started looking for a quality set. This one stood out as the best one in my price range. It came in two packages, one for the pieces and another for the board/storage. Everything was well protected in shipping and arrived in excellent condition. The board is beautiful, actually it's such good carpentry that it's hard to believe it's real wood. The pieces have a nice handmade quality to them and are a very good weight. I didn't need any service so no feedback on that front. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Settlers of Catan Mega Bundle Review

Settlers of Catan Mega Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're like me, you got introduced to Catan by playing the 3-4 player 'basic' game. I learned the hard way, getting beat repeatedly by more experienced players who were allegedly my friends. Catan is a game both simple in its concept and yet incredibly complex and difficult to master. Learning it in the natural order of the expansion packs therefore makes a lot of sense. That's why, despite the fact that Catan and all of its expansions are fantastic, I cannot recommend this collection to anyone but a seasoned Catan veteran.
Getting every expansion from the get-go might encourage a lot of jumping from expansion to expansion without really engaging each expansion properly. Seafarers itself can provide years and years of game play without boredom setting in. Unless you've already played AT LEAST half of the expansions in this set, I would recommend starting modestly and working your way out to the newest expansion packs. Otherwise you may miss some of the finer points of Catan strategy. It could also be daunting to try to learn all of the rules for each expansion right away.
All that said, each Catan expansion is excellent, and this is a perfect set to buy if you already have played a lot of Catan, know you like it, and don't want to pull any punches. If you're addicted to Catan, this is the perfect set to buy. It will give you everything you need to play Catan basically forever.
A note: this is the new 4th generation set. I prefer the more muted graphics of the 3rd generation, but that is purely aesthetic preference.

Settlers of Catan 3rd Edition 5-6 Player Expansion Review

Settlers of Catan 3rd Edition 5-6 Player Expansion

Over the years, I have played this game countless times, and each time it's been a blast. Build towns to collect resources when that number is drawn. Use those resources to build more towns or draw special cards. My favorite part of this game is resource trading among players. It's common to hear things like "I'll give you two wheat for a sheep", and it sometimes escalates into a full blown bidding war among players.
The best part about this game is that it's random every time. The board is randomly placed and that makes people's strategies change every time they play. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

Honor of the Samurai Review

Honor of the Samurai
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During the 16th century, Japan was immersed in its bloody Sengoku period, an anarchic time of warfare and intrigue between daimyos, powerful warlords roughly the equivalent of European barons.
In Honor of the Samurai, players are samurai warriors, each supporting a daimyo and striving to accumulate the most honor. Following a trend of recent years toward cards rather than a game table, actions in the game are resolved through disposition of cards on the table, strategic use of cards in hand, and periodic rolls of the dice.
"The Card Game of Intrigue, Honor and Shame" is the subtitle of the game, and aptly summarizes its action. While striving to acquire the most honor, players are constantly faced with the temptation to use dishonorable means, such as assassination, theft, or firearms. Success depends on a careful balance between honorable and dishonorable actions.
Game components include 110 cards, six custom dice, and a succinct rule book. The illustrations on the cards are beautifully rendered, depicting such things as daimyos, wives, armies, ancestors' weapons, and house guards. They are also on a heavy, laminated stock, helping to ensure that the game will hold up for a long time.
The standard-shaped dice (six-sided) are marked with the actual symbols of Japanese noble houses, each of which conforms to a different number. These are easily recognizable, e.g., the symbol for "1" is a red circle, for "2" a pair of parallel wavy lines, for "5" a five-sided lotus flower.
Play moves quickly, with a single turn rarely taking more than a few minutes. An entire game can be played in an hour or so, and the number of honor points needed to win the game can be reduced, shortening the length of play.
Fortunes can change quickly in Honor of the Samurai. In one turn a player can declare his daimyo to be shogun, overall warlord of Japan, and in the next that shogun will be deposed, slain in battle or dispatched by a ninja assassin. Then the title of shogun passes to the victor, or remains in contention.
Gamewright rates Honor of the Samurai as being suitable for ages 10 to adult. Indeed, after a few turns of play a reasonably clever child 10 or older can master the rudiments of the game and will enjoy intriguing with the best of them. Children and adults will also learn about the rich, violent history that is elegantly infused into the rules, and summarized in a brief section at the end.
Honor of the Samurai delivers on all its promises, and is destined to join the ranks of the best fast-paced strategy games.

Monopoly Junior Deep Sea Adventure Review

I bought this game for my 6 year old, and we have had more fun playing it. The rules have been simplified just right for younger children to play without losing a lot of the fun for adults. I especially liked the use of lower denominations on the money - $1, $2, $3, $4, and $5. This allows my son to act as bank and has been wonderful practice for him in simple math and making change. Each card also contains interesting and educational facts about different sea creatures. I would defiantly recommend this game!

Gulo Gulo Review

Gulo Gulo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gulo Gulo is the genus and species name of the wolverine, a rapacious beast. In this game, your wolverine is dying to eat the vulture's eggs. Not wanting to lose her brood, the vulture has set an up an alarm to tip her off to clumsy wolverines. In addition, she's kidnapped and hidden the baby wolverine.
Which brave wolverine will rescue that little guy?
THE COMPONENTS
Rio Grande Games doesn't make chintzy products. This game is beautifully made, even down to the sturdiness of the cardboard box! The vulture's nest is a carved wood bowl filled with wooden eggs in five sizes and colors. The board is a randomly assigned set of thick, two-sided octagonal tiles: one side with grass, the other with wolverines clutching an egg that corresponds to the egg colors. Wolverine player pieces in six colors accompany the set, and even those are painted in just the right places.
PLAYING THE GAME
The playing board tiles are arranged randomly, grass side up, leading to the vulture's nest. (The random element means no two games play exactly the same--nice.) A set of five tiles, also grass side up, is placed as the last set before the vulture's nest. An egg atop a slender stick--the egg alarm--is inserted vertically between the eggs in the nest.
The hungriest player goes first, turning over the first tile, revealing a wolverine clutching a colored egg. The player must then grab the corresponding colored egg from the nest without toppling the egg alarm to the playing surface. If successful, the player can move atop that tile. Subsequent players can elect to turn over the next hidden tile or simply move to a tile already turned. (That latter strategy can be based on the state of the eggs in the nest.) A player who fully topples the egg alarm must move back to the previous tile that represents the color of egg whose attempted removal set off the alarm. The eggs and alarm are then reset.
On reaching the final pile of tiles, a player removes one tile on the pile and its corresponding egg (without setting off the alarm) until the baby wolverine tile is uncovered. A player must then successfully remove one of the two purple eggs in the nest to win the game.
PROS:
* Well-made and durable game components.
* Random game tile placements changes the play each game.
* Good blend of play options for both aggressive and cautious players.
* Players who makes a mistake (or even several) are rarely left out of the endgame.
* Because little fingers can more deftly remove the small eggs, kids can beat their parents.
* Though a children's game, adults will definitely enjoy playing.
* Clever game play mixes strategy with dexterity.
* To prevent setting off the alarm when removing eggs, anxious and boisterous kids must still themselves and concentrate--a good skill to learn.
*Once played, the game is simple to later explain to others.
CONS:
* Cost is a bit steep compared with most children's games of this type, but that's almost a spurious con considering the quality of the components.
* At eight pages, the instruction book is daunting on first glance, but it contains instructions in three languages.
* In the beginning, the rules may seem complex, but running through one game will prove how easy it is to play.My son loves playing this game and so do my wife and I. Outstanding quality, excellent design, a changeable board, and easily explained rules make every aspect of this game top-notch. Even if you've never heard of it until now, you won't regret purchasing Gulo Gulo.

The wolverine Gulo Gulo is always hungry, especially when near a nest of fresh eggs. Young wolverines love swamp eggs just as much as adults, but are not as careful. Thus, junior is caught and the family has to rescue him, while getting eggs for themselves! Whoever can move along the path the fastest will collect the most eggs and rescue junior!

My 7 year old son loves this game. It is educational and the whole family can play. It's great practice for him to have to add up numbers different ways to see which numbers he wants to pull down. I'm not sure the price matches the quality of the game though. The picture was misleading in that it is not a hinged box with the top coming down. It is a drawer box where you pull off the top to access the game. I am very disappointed in how much I paid for the game.

King Kong Deluxe Chess Set Review

King Kong Deluxe Chess Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this up on ebay for about 100.00. Beautiful item for the Kong collector, weighs about 35 pounds and seems to be made entirely of cast resin. The board top lifts off and inside is a foam piece with holes for the various pieces. With the exception of one piece with a slight bow to the bottom all the game pieces set well on the board. The figures are sculpted to look rather like Art Deco statues of the 1930's. The black pieces represent the inhabitants of Skull Island and the White pieces are the ship's cast and crew. I especially like the board that has buildings on one side and jungle on the other. The one problem I had (other than the wobbly piece) was that I kept getting the knights and the bishop pieces mixed up as they are of similar height and both represented on the island side by prehistoric animals. (I need more practice to get used to it I guess) I'm pleased as it is a very beautiful chess set of one of my favorite movie characters. At full price it's abit much, but well worth 150.00 or so looking at similar sets.

Retail price is $475! The primal savagery of Skull Island clashes against the urban sophistication of 1933 New York as man and monster battle for supremacy on the chessboard. Kong, ruler of the dark and terrifying Skull Island, a world of tangled jungle, superstitious sacrifice and nightmarish monsters, beats his chest in defiance against the might of the industrial age. New York, urban pinnacle of the western world and symbolic of the artificial power of man, is his adversary, having taken from Kong, that which he most loves, the beautiful Ann Darrow. Scuplted by Weta Workshop's Mary Maclachlan, Gary Hunt and Ben Hawker. Item Size: approx. 10 inches H (254mm) x 15.5 inches W (394mm) x 15.5 inches L (394mm). Axis & Allies Pacific Review

Axis and Allies Pacific
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just completed playing one game with my 45 yr. old brother as the allies, and I have to say that I enjoyed the game. I used to play regular A&A quite often with him, so I think the test of wills was a fair comparison.
We learned early on, that it is critical to use CAP to slow enemies movements or to channel them into specific sea zones. If you play Japan, prepare to execute flawless turns, because the game is fairly unforgiving to mistakes on their part. Conserve your carriers! They are irreplacable.
At 75 IPCs, the industrial might of the US is truly impressive. Even after getting my clock cleaned on turns one and two (at the expense of the entire Japanese Eastern Pacific Fleet), I was still able to build 2 carriers, 2 destroyers, 2 transports, a sub and a marine! Japan can expect only to delay the US, not defeat them. A better strategy is to press the Aussies and Indians.
The game is better than vanilla A&A and the tactical possibilities are truly interesting because players tend to do a lot of unexpected things on every turn. Combat Air Patrol, US Marines, air and naval bases, submerging subs and destroyers added greatly to the pleasure of this game.
This one's a squid's dream, boys and girls and we will be playing it again I'm sure. Kudos to AH and Hasbro!

Axis & Allies Pacific is the second expansion to the Axis & Allies game system. In this game, three main powers (Britain, Japan, and the US) square off against each other against the backdrop of the Pacific ocean. Japan is trying to grow her empire, either through military might or by holding off the Allies long enough to consolidate her gains. The game adds a few new rules and a few new twists to the established A&A game system. Naval bases and air bases turn small, meaningless islands into vital strategic holdings. Convoy zones allow a single submarine pack to cripple an economy. The Chinese forces, while limited, are hard to crush. Japan gets her kamikazes, but will it be enough to hold off the vast economic power of the USA?

Starfarers of Catan Review

Starfarers of Catan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have loved Settlers of Catan since I first played it. I was thrilled when I first saw Starfarers (I loved the retro Flash Gordon look).
Unlike the other Settler games, this one actually uses plastic and not wood for many of the pieces/parts. My friends can be quite rowdy late at night but in the years I have had the game, no piece has ever broken.
Play is a little different than in other sets. Its sort of like Seafarers with lots of little islands. Development cards are there (although there are some new resources) and they have been joined by encounter cards where you deal with alien races, traders and pirates. Play lasts a little longer than the original but is comparable to Cities & Knights.
The board is beautiful and rather large (no small contained hex this time). Players ability to move and fight are modified by upgrades to their central ship/die roller/neat thing. There is currently an expansion set for adding up to two more players which I just picked up (so I don't know how it affects play yet).
All in all, this is a really fun addition to the Settlers world of games (I have eight of them so far). If you liked the original and wanted a bit more of a challenge, this is a great addition to your game closet.

This is a beautifully crafted chess set at a great price! The red onyx and fossil marble contrast nicely! Nicely carved pieces. Very pleased. The only thing I did was add felt circles from a craft store to the bottoms of the pieces so they wouldn't scratch the board. The board itself is a work of art.

This classic chess set design has long been a standard for marble, onyx, and stone chess sets and continues to be popular today. The chess pieces have an attractive rustic Staunton look with slightly exaggerated features that facilitate carving solid stone. The Fossil Marble is primarily gold color with original oceanic fossils like clams etc. The white marble is predominately solid white but will sometimes have small veins of other colors intermingled. The combination of these two colors creates a beautiful contrast. * King Height: 3" * King Base: 1" * Square Size: 1 1/4" * Overall Size of Chess Board: 12" x 12" x 1/2" * Comes packaged in a VELVET GIFT BOX that holds chess pieces and chess board individually.
