King Kong Deluxe Chess Set Review

King Kong Deluxe Chess Set

I picked this up on ebay for about 100.00. Beautiful item for the Kong collector, weighs about 35 pounds and seems to be made entirely of cast resin. The board top lifts off and inside is a foam piece with holes for the various pieces. With the exception of one piece with a slight bow to the bottom all the game pieces set well on the board. The figures are sculpted to look rather like Art Deco statues of the 1930's. The black pieces represent the inhabitants of Skull Island and the White pieces are the ship's cast and crew. I especially like the board that has buildings on one side and jungle on the other. The one problem I had (other than the wobbly piece) was that I kept getting the knights and the bishop pieces mixed up as they are of similar height and both represented on the island side by prehistoric animals. (I need more practice to get used to it I guess) I'm pleased as it is a very beautiful chess set of one of my favorite movie characters. At full price it's abit much, but well worth 150.00 or so looking at similar sets.

Retail price is $475! The primal savagery of Skull Island clashes against the urban sophistication of 1933 New York as man and monster battle for supremacy on the chessboard. Kong, ruler of the dark and terrifying Skull Island, a world of tangled jungle, superstitious sacrifice and nightmarish monsters, beats his chest in defiance against the might of the industrial age. New York, urban pinnacle of the western world and symbolic of the artificial power of man, is his adversary, having taken from Kong, that which he most loves, the beautiful Ann Darrow. Scuplted by Weta Workshop's Mary Maclachlan, Gary Hunt and Ben Hawker. Item Size: approx. 10 inches H (254mm) x 15.5 inches W (394mm) x 15.5 inches L (394mm). Pieces range in size from approx. 2.75 inches H (70mm) x 1 inches W (25mm) x 1 inches L (25mm) to 3.5 inches H (89mm) x 1.25 inches W (32mm) x 1.25 inches L (32mm).

Cathedral - Polystone Review

Cathedral - Polystone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cathedral has been around in one form or another since 1984. This is a sign of the quality of the game rules as well as the willingness of publishers to release another version. The game has been released in styrene plastic, wood, and now resin plastic pieces. Additionally there are some small run resin sets. Like chess, some owners enjoy the highest quality pieces (in which case wood is the nicest set) and others just want to play the game (in which case any set will do).
Also like chess, this abstract game is enjoyable, but tending toward the dry side. One player plays the neutral cathedral piece in the center. Then the players take turns placing buildings, hoping to cordon off corners and preventing the opponent's play in that area or surrounding lone pieces and capturing them. The winner of the game is the one who has fewer building units left, i.e. the number of building squares.
Without any element of chance, the game has very deep play possibility. The one who plays first has a slight advantage, so tournaments often suggest playing a best of two series. With both simple rules and serious strategy, the game has long lasting appeal to both beginners and serious gamers alike.

Dragon Chess Set - Style 35301 Review

Dragon Chess Set - Style 35301
Average Reviews:

The board itself is really heavy. All the pieces are very detailed and are a nice weight--they do not look or feel "cheap". The sides of the board have castle mosaics "carved" into it and the gilt dragons, like the pieces, are extremely detailed and quite lovely. The actual playing board that goes on top is gold and silver with "cracking" to make it look aged/antique. This was well worth the $45!!!

We are very pleased with this chess set. It is very detailed, and well worth the money. We were kind of leary at first, but when it arrived, we were very impressed. Picture did not do this set justice. We keep this set displayed in our living room. Anything that we have ordered from Amazon has been well worth our money.

NINE MEN'S MORRIS - TRAVEL SIZE Review

NINE MEN'S MORRIS - TRAVEL SIZE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nine Men's Morris, AKA the Mill Game, is a fun traditional strategy game, played in three phases, and it is very easy to learn.
This one is visually attractive, and has internal storage for the marbles that are used as playing pieces. As a child, I had a wooden Mill Game with metal pegs for the playing pieces, and that is what I was hoping to buy, because I was concerned about the marbles falling on the floor and rolling away. I could not find one that used pegs, however, and this appeared to be the nicest of the reasonably priced boards.
It arrived today, and it is as fun as I remember from childhood, but the marbles are more of a pain than I expected. The players either need to keep the unplayed marbles in their hands when they're not on the board, or need to have a little dish nearby for holding them. The the marbles are not standard-sized either, so when one gets lost it will be hard to replace with one that fits in the internal storage compartment.
It is attractive enough to keep on top of your coffee table, but you will not want to display it with the marbles on top, or you will likely knock them on the floor.
The board itself appears quite durable. I'm giving it a low durability score because of the likelihood of losing the marbles.

Nine Men's Morris is an abstract strategy board game for two players that emerged from the Roman Empire. The game's popularity peaked in Medieval England. Our version of this historic game is beautifully crafted from wood. The pieces, "or men", store neatly inside the game when not in play.

Blue Moon City Review

Blue Moon City

Replaced Kill Doctor Lucky and Carcassonne as our new favorite game. My wife and I love to play board games and this one is perfect. Things we like about the game.
1) Theme - different fantasy races trying to rebuild their beautiful city. Gorgeous artwork on cards and game tiles bring this game to life.
2) Well constructed - game tiles/pieces are made with quality and the cards are holding up nicely even after well over 10 games worth of shuffling.
3)Perfect Moderate Pace - Not super fast and not annoying slow. Each turn takes about a minute or so, most of the time you know what you want to do before it gets to your turn.
4) Strategy! you have to think ahead with your cards and board movement, a lot of times you have more than one option, but trust me, it isn't headache complicated.
5) Never the same game twice! - move the tiles and shape the city any which way you want, hindering movement to certain areas or creating possible higher/lower finished tile combos.
6) Not a lot of Fiddly bits. The game doesn't have you control a bunch of game pieces. I find this confusing in other games, trying to remember everything you have.
We are yet to play it with our friends, who also love the other two above games. Should be very interesting in a 3/4 player game.
****Tons of Fun!****

Gamewright Castle Keep, the Game of Medieval Strategy and Siege Review

Gamewright Castle Keep, the Game of Medieval Strategy and Siege
Average Reviews:

There are two ways to play this game. You can play it with basic rules. This game will last about 15-20 minutes with minimal strategy. The second way to play this game is with the advanced rules. THis game will last 30-40 minutes with much more strategy. The best part of this game is that it alows for quick rule explanation and understanding. The worst part about this game is that even with the advanced rules, there is still a huge amount of luck involved. Whatever the case. This is a great game if you are looking for a quick light strategy game.

Transport yourself to a time when protecting your possessions meant defending your keep, the most secure part of the castle. Keeps were often called ?great towers because of their imposing structure walls over 10 feet thick and 75 feet high. They served various functions, from last resort strongholds during battle to sites of castle dungeons. While there are few remaining keeps still standing today, you can get a small taste of what it was like to build and defend a castle in this game that is simple to learn, yet full of strategy and decision-making elements that will challenge all ages. HOW TO PLAY: Raise your castle! Raze the enemy! In this clever game of medieval maneuvers, build a castle with walls, towers, and a keep by matching color, shape, or both. Will you use your game tiles to strengthen your fortress or to attack vulnerable opponents? Choose wisely, or you may find yourself in royal ruins! The first player to build a complete castle rules the land. 2 to 4 Players. Playing Time: 20 Minutes

Agricola Review

Agricola
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been an active player of board games for at least 35 years. I've played games at all levels of complexity, ranging from tournament level Avalon-Hill bookcase games to family and party card and boardgames. For the past five or so years my favorite board game has been "The Settlers of Catan" (and its variants), that is, until I played "Agricola".
OK, first, a bit about the game...
Each player in the game (up to 5 can play) represent a farmer in 1670 AD and his spouse. About now you may be thinking, "yawn," but just wait, there is some real strategy and fun to be had here. Play progresses as players use their farmer and spouse each turn to do different things including the possibility of building a larger house, raising crops, fencing in pastures, collecting food, collecting animals, having children (that can also work each turn), etc. All the way through the game there is a real challenge when it comes to feeding your family, and improving your lot in life. You can improve your chances of success by playing occupation cards that give your players different capabilites, and by playing cards that represent a variety of differing improvements to your house, fields, etc.
The neat thing about this game is that every occupation card and every improvement card is unique, and because players are dealt only a limited number of cards at the beginning of the game, the game is never the same twice.
This game takes about twice as long to play as a round of "The Settlers of Catan", but the time flies when you play.
Many websites that rank the popularity of games are seeing this game climb rapidly to the top of those rankings.
If you enjoy a game that employs a small element of luck (the cards you are dealt), and a large degree of strategy (what to work to have your family members do each turn), then this game may be for you. So, if you have taken games like "The Settlers of Catan", "Ticket to Ride", and "Carcassone" as far as you can and you are ready for a bit larger gaming challenge then you will not be disappointed with this offering.
OK, one last experience - my wife and I were playing this game recently when our 9-yr-old daughter came up and asked, "Is that game like the 'Game of Life'?" After a moment's reflection I told her it was more like the game of "real" life. You know, working hard, scrambling to feed the family, accumulating different commodities to improve the house, etc.
When I opened my copy of the game I was impressed that the game company had the foresight to go so far as to include a bag of small reclosable plastic bags that can be used to separate the different pieces and types of cards from each other, thus helping keep the game better organized in the box and making for quicker set-up times whenever you want to play. Thanks Z-Man Games!
This game is worth far more than 5 stars!
I believe that this game will remain a favorite of mine for many years to come.
I hope this review was helpful.
Note: One last thing, it is WAY easier to learn to play this game if you can hook up with someone that already plays the game than by reading the rules on your own.

Days of Wonder Shadows Over Camelot Review

Days of Wonder Shadows Over Camelot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most boardgames based on legends and tales seem to quickly lose their fantastical feel as the players are forced into learning complex (or overly simplistic) strategies. And all too often these strategies and modes of play are only loosely aligned with the tale they are based on, thus dropping the player right out of the fantasy and into the "boredgame" syndrome. However, Shadows Over Camelot neither loses its fantastical feel nor disconnects the elements of play from the rich Arthurian history. Its designers should be hailed for their brilliant use of characters with unique strengths, relevant and interesting quests, wonderful artwork and incredible game play balance. Their use of positive and negative player actions, a secret "traitor" character and the constant pressure of ever encroaching enemies is exiciting and challenging. They have successfully captured some of the "funnest" attributes of fantasy gaming, while offering a strategic challenge that had our group clapping and shouting at hard-won victories. It was easy to learn, but will take some time to master - one of the attributes any great game should possess. Our hats (and helms) are off to the Days of Wonder folks. Great stuff!

A lone swallow flies across the grey skies of Cornwall. The forces of evil are gathering around Camelot. The Black Knight was sighted atop a desolate ridge; a scheming Morgan plots her revenge; the Saxon troops are on the move; and acres of timber are being felled for the siege engines. And yet Lancelot has all but vanished, with Excalibur yet to be recovered. These are heavy times indeed. Will you, young squire, come forth and pledge allegiance to your fellow Knights of the Round Table' In your heart of pure intent and ready to sacrifice for the good of all' Or will the dark promise of power seduce you into treason' Shadows Over Camelot is a unique collaborative game featuring a malevolent twist. As the incarnation of the Knights of the Round Table, players work together to defeat the forces closing in on Camelot. But beware, players must be vigilant for a traitor in their midst who is biding his time-secretly sowing the seeds of havoc and destruction. Yet too much suspicion will undermine the knight's efforts to protect the kingdom. These are dangerous times indeed. Many memorable game nights await in this Days of Wonder game. The game is for 3 to 7 players and takes about 60-90 minutes to play.

Carcassonne Review

Carcassonne
Average Reviews:

Most people come to this game after they have already been introduced to the European Designer Games by Settlers of Catan. This is a different kind of game than Settlers but in some senses it shares a lot of commonalities.
The game is easy to learn for a wide audience, it is reasonably quick to play (30 - 40 minutes) and is a very "immersive" game i.e. there aren't long periods of boredom. There are elements of strategy and luck, which makes for a "fun" game experience.
This game is fun for children and adults. For children the "farmers" are a little too complex, but the game works very well without that element.
The game consists of laying tiles to build cities, roads and monasteries in the South of France. Points are gained by creating long roads, building large cities or farming multiple farms. It draws elements of building jigsaw puzzles together with a strategy game of competing for territory.
I have played this game with family members who aren't really into board games and they enjoyed it just as much as gamers.
There are many expansions to this game which add a few more dimensions as you get more advanced. There is a very high replay-ability.
I would high recommend this game to people who are bored with standard Monopoly or Cranium type board games that are popular in the US.
If you loved Settler's of Catan this a "must"!
Summary:
General
o 2 - 5 Players
o 30 - 40 minutes Playing time
Audience -
o Children & Adults
o Serious and Casual Gamers
Format
o Tile Laying
o Combines Strategy & Luck
Longevity
o High Replay-ability
