Carcassonne Game Bundle #2 Review

Carcassonne Game Bundle #2

The questions ask about durability and education. Well it is a game, kinda a board game so its durability depends on how well you take care of it. If you have every played settlers of catan I love this so much more. Its easier to play with a minimum of two people. But great for a crowd especially if you get the extensions. You can play 2 to 6 people (with a certain expansion that gives you the extra player pieces). The best thing is the board is never the same. Its all tiles and you create the board as you go. The product came in great shape and we have played a ton of times.

Carcassonne The City Review

Carcassonne The City
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I played the original Carcassone before playing Carscassone the City. Both games are great, but they're not really different enough for most people to bother owning both.
Both games have the advantage of quick, easy setup, since the game is building the board. They both work well with two players (or more). They've also got a near perfect balance of strategy and luck. Enough strategy to make the game engaging every time you play but enough luck to prevent cut-throat competition and hurt feelings (most of the time). They're also both easy to learn; one game was enough for me to understand the rules of either (though the certainly sound complicated at first)
So on to the differences:
-Something about the farms in Carcassone confuses me; it just takes so much effort to figure out where the borders are. The markets in Carcassone the City serve a similar role but are much easier to understand.
-Carcassone the City also has the fancy wooden box if you care about those things. Personally, I prefer the cardboard box that seems to be designed for the pieces to the big open box.
-Carcassone the City has some interesting twists/variations on Carcassone that make the game more interesting and fun.
-However, Carcassone the City does not work with the expansions to Carcassone. You're limited to 4 players and the current pieces and rules.
If you ever want to play with more than 4 people, get Carcassone and an expansion set (I recommend Traders and Builders). If you're okay with the four person limitation and no expansions, Carcassone the City is definitely more interesting and fun than Carcassone without expansions.

The impressive city of Carcassonne was a magnet for tourists from all lands even in the middle ages. Its large markets, grandiose homes, and busy streets made the whole city a popular attraction. Here is your chance to build the city of Carcassonne! Players build up the old town together by placing tiles. While the town area grows, the town walls grow around it, starting from a wooden tower. The wall is comprised of delicately carved wooden parts, that create a beautiful rendition of the medieval town at the end of the game. At the end, you will all enjoy looking at the beautiful 3-D city you have built! Also, the game comes in a beautiful wooden box that is as beautiful as the game is fun to play!

Carcassonne Inns & Cathedrals Review

Carcassonne Inns and Cathedrals

The game is a classic in the "eurogame" phenomenon. Often called a gateway drug... er... I mean gateway game. Involves spatial rotation to build a map of roads, farms, and cities. The expansion, Inns and cathedrals, adds some more flavor and allows for one more player.
*Note, this is not a stand-alone game.

The expansion offers all fans of Carcassonne new challenges: The Cathedral triples the value of a city, and the Inn doubles the value of a road but only when they are completed. Players may use the new large follower to double their chances of controlling a city, road, or field. Also included is all necessary material to allow a sixth player to join in the fun. Finally, there are six point tiles to make scoring easier when players score more than 50 points. You need to have the Carcassonne game in order to use this expansion.

I love playing Quests because it is a great mood-maker. It brings you into the romantic, daring age of chivalry and knights... ladies and dragons... One can learn how to play in only a few minutes, and then move on the enjoy the beautiful artwork on the cards. It is like a smooth combination of poker-style card playing and dungeons and dragons-style role-taking It finishes up nice and quickly too - so you have the option of playing another game or moving on. We played with adult and young together, and everybody had fun. Great value for the price. END

N.y. Chase Review

N.y. Chase

My guess is that this game plays much like Scotland Yard, its predecessor, just with a different geography.
The game does build teamwork among up to five players who are the detectives trying to corner the six player representing the fugitive Mister X. Is is in contrast to other games where competition is purely the objective. Of course competition still exists against Mister X who has to show some clever moves to outwit the team of detectives.
The game is indeed a challenge for Mister X to remain at large through all the turns of the game. Experienced players should taken on the role. Otherwise, expect a short lived game, with Mister X captured by the detectives early on.

Carcassonne: The Tower Expansion Review

Carcassonne: The Tower Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This expansion to Carcassonne is simple to learn, but changes the game in a pretty dramatic way. The box includes 18 new tiles (all with a tower base printed on them), wooden tower construction pieces, and a cardboard tower to use to stack unplayed tiles.
The way the towers work is interesting. When a player places a tile with a tower base printed on it, he can either play on the tile's roads, cities, etc. as usual or place a tower building block on the tile. When he (let's call him Bob) places a tower block, he may remove a marker from an adjacent square belonging to an opponent (let's call her Alice) and hold it hostage. Bob will keep Alice's piece hostage until Alice captures one of Bob's pieces with a tower she builds.
Players are not limited to placing tower blocks on the piece they just played. A tower block can be placed on any tower piece that has been played previously. As towers grow taller, the zone vulnerable to capture from that tower expands. A tower can be built to unlimited height, but if a player puts one of his or her colored game markers on top of the tower, it can no longer be added to.
The tower concept really changes the strategy in the game. At any time, an opponent could draw a tower square, place it next to your uncompleted city, and steal your colored piece. Because of this constant risk of attack, it is often best to complete roads and cities early to lock in points. Also, playing right next to a tower piece is usually foolish, so the game surface tends to be more spread out than in the basic game.
I do enjoy the tower expansion overall. It really makes you rethink your strategy for the game, which I think is always a good test for an expansion pack. That said, I think some of the other expansions (particularly the Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders expansions) are better. Try those first.

Ever upwards in Carcassonne! In this Carcassonne expansion, players have the opportunity to build upwards. The lords of the region around Carcassonne erect towers to strengthen and promote their power and influence. They employ followers to stand guard on the towers, watching over the land so they can inform their lords of all who travel and move throughout the area. Players may capture opponents' followers, holding them in prison. Later, the players may arrange a prisoner exchange to the advantage of the players invloved. Also, a player may arrange to pay ransom for the return of an imprisoned follower. Fans of Carcassonne will enjoy the new tactical opportunities offered by this expansion. The expansion also includes a special tower for storing the landscape tiles, giving players a convenient way to draw tiles during the game. This is an expansion to the popular Carcassonne game that is for 2 to 6 players. You need to have Carcassonne in order to play with this expansion.

Carcassone: Princess & Dragon Expansion Review

Carcassone: Princess and Dragon Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice expansion to the Carcassone game - especially for 2 players, as it adds the possibility of having pieces removed from the board before they can score. That also means the opportunity to steal points from your opponent.
However, the rules to this one are a bit overly complex. There is a lot of "do this instead of what you would normally do" making a lot of things to think about and a lot more decisions to make every turn. That makes the game last longer, as each turn takes longer. The rules are also somewhat ambiguous on a few points, especially when mixing with some of the other Carcassone expansion.
I don't recommend combining this with the Tower expansion, in the same game. Our last one took over 2 hours for 3 players! Both expansions are fun on their own, though. I think I'll alternate a few games.

In this expansion from the prize-winning Carcassonne, we move into the realm of fantasy. The land around Carcassonne is being visited by a dragon, making life very difficult for the followers. Brave heroes venture forth to face the danger, but without the aid of the fairies, their chances are not good.In the city, the princess seeks help from the knights, and farmers build secret passages to move about undetected by the dragon. We hope you enjoy this special trip into the land of Carcassonne!

Carcassonne Discovery Review

I've played all of the current Carcassonne expansions, but Carcassonne: The Discovery is the least competitive of all of them. This game is much more family friendly because of it. The shapes and colors are easy to recognize and play with. The only problem I've had with this game is storage. The pictures on the tiles are glued on, so make sure to store in a dry place otherwise they'll peel off.

Carcassonne: The Catapult Review

Carcassonne: The Catapult
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played with all of the various large and small expansions for Carcassonne and The Catapult is far and away my least favorite.
The premise is that a fair has come to the town of Carcassonne and with it some exciting games of skill and chance. The set comes with about a dozen new tiles, four types of catapult tiles and the catapult itself.
The playing rules are fairly straightforward. Whenever a fair piece comes out, it's time to use the catapult to launch one of the four catapult tiles into the board. Each tile has a different effect.
Knock out: Removes from play any playing piece it touches, including those of the firing player.
Seduction: Offers the firing player the opportunity to replace the closest opposing piece with one of their own.
Target: Five points for whoever can get the piece closest to the fair tile that was just placed.
Catch: Various point awards when an opposing player can/cannot catch a piece catapulted in their direction.
The whole thing plays a little gimmicky and really wasn't that much fun. The catapult is too big and will generally only shoot the pieces straight up in the air making any kind targeting effort practically worthless. It seemed to us that the game designers were out of expansion ideas when they came up with this one.
There are a number of very worthwhile expansions to Carcassonne but this is not one of them. If you absolutely must have every expansion, go ahead and pick The Catapult up. Maybe you'll enjoy it. The art on the new tiles is really nice and since we can't return the set we'll probably continue to use them and come up with some expansion rules (sans catapult) on our own.
But generally speaking, I'd suggest you save your money and skip Carcassonne: The Catapult.

Carcassonne the Count Review

Carcassonne the Count
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Count of Carcassonne (CoC) is an expansion for the game Carcassonne. It is a starting point to be used in place of the river or single starting tile included with the basic game.
CoC allows players to "stash" pieces in the town. As the game progresses, they can draw on these pieces to take control of valuable map features (cities, roads, cloisters, farms) as other players score. It makes the game more complex and adds another dimension to strategy and game play.
The design of the tiles also eliminates the mega farms the often develop in the basic game.
I think those who prefer Carcassonne sessions heavy on strategy and competition for each and every scoring opportunity, will enjoy this expansion the most. We enjoy it but don't play with it often.

Kids of Carcassonne Review

Kids of Carcassonne
Average Reviews:

This is a great game for little kids. The game consists of tiles with parts of several paths on them. Some paths end and others are open. You match up path tiles and try to put end points to close off a path. If your character's color is in a path that's closed, you place a wood token there. The player with the most wood tokens when all the tiles are done wins. It's that easy! It's a richer version of "pipe" or "snake" games where you build the pieces.
The tiles are sturdy, easy to place, and beautifully illustrated in rich illustrations and bright colors. The person tokens are made of thick wood and the entire set is made from very obviously quality materials - no plastic anywhere! There are no dice, spinners, or any type of counting needed for the game - each player takes turn placing tiles and trying to close off the paths on which their characters are sitting. The strategy is easy here so this is great for families with children of multiple ages.
This is a quality game and we received it as a wonderful gift. It's one of those wonderful gifts that families can enjoy playing together.

On 14 July, the national holiday in France, the sheep, chickens and cows are set free in the town of carcassonne. The children have big fun to catch the animals before dusk. The players in turn draw a landscape tile and place it; unlike in normal carcassonne, they always match. Amongst other features, the tiles show children in the player colors on the roads. Whenever a road is finished, every player places one of his meeples on each appropriate picture. The first player who manages to place all of his meeples wins the game.

Medici Review

Medici
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Medici is a game about bidding and quantitative risk. Each players turn they lay out 1-3 cards (flipping 1 at a time and stopping when they choose) each consisting on a resource and a point value. Then each player bids until the player who placed the cards gets the final bid. Whoever wins gets the 1-3 cards to put in there "cargo" (max of 5). At the end of each day (all cards run out or all cargo ships are full) You tally your resources then divy out money depending on who is leading in resources and points in their cargo ship for that day.
There is a total of 3 days and it gets really interesting on how to bid. There may be a load that you do not want but you know someone else really wants. So you will bid just so they have to pay more. But they could just let you have it and mess up your game (and potentially theirs).
The dynamics of the game changes a lot depending on the style of who you are playing with and whether you playing with 3,4 or 5 people.
This is mostly a game of balancing risk. I've never played another game quite like this one and I think that is where Medici stands aparty. Originality. It's very simple to learn how to play though it is very confusing to know what to bid your first couple times playing.
My friends and I play a LOT of games and this is one we frequently go back to. I highly recommend it. I know it's out of print so hopefully it doesn't become too hard to find over time.

Return to the trading days of the ancient Medici family when ships sailed throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. Bid at the markets for the best prices on valuable and not so valuable goods. Corner the market on a commodity and reap additional rewards. Fill your ship and set sail for foreign markets where your goods will fetch high prices. After three trips to the market, the player with the most money wins! Games Magazine writes, "It's great to see Reiner Knizia's classic redesigned in English". The game is for 2 to 6 players and takes about 45 minutes to play.

This second expansion takes Carcassonne to new dimensions of fun and excitement. Traders can earn players extra points and builders enable players to place extra tiles, allowing the cities and roads to grow faster. A pig, properly placed, can enrich the value of a farm. Also included is a small cloth bag for the tiles, making it easier to shuffle and draw them during the game. Traders and Builders is not a complete game, but must be played with Carcassonne. The expansion is designed for 2 to 6 players and takes about an hour to play.

Carcassonne Travel edition Review

Carcassonne Travel edition
Average Reviews:

There are only two differences between this version and the original Carcassonne game.
1) It comes with a cloth scoreboard/bag. You cannot use the bag for pulling tiles out of while using it as a scoreboard, thus the dual purpose is kind of ruined... it's only useful for storing game pieces when not in use.
2) The pieces are merely slightly smaller. Not even a 2/3rds difference from the original set. This means you won't save a lot of extra space when travelling compared to the original. This also means you can never add any of the optional expansion sets to it, since the sizes are different.
Our normal play set consists of the original game, Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, King & Scout, River 1 & 2, die Cartherer, and the mini-expansion from Games Quarterly magazine #11. All of these pieces from all of the sets fit into the original box with the original insert (without hiding pieces underneath.) The trick is to carefully lay the meeples flat in a ziplock sandwich baggie on top of the scoreboard. We take Carcassonne on all our trips with us and rarely lack room in our luggage for this one box of game items, although it could be collapsed further into a smaller package by placing all the game items in a smaller box/bag and using a smaller homemade scoreboard.
I see absolutely no advantage or allure to owning this travel edition when the original is just as portable.

Carcassonne Abbey & Mayor 5th Extension Review

Carcassonne Abbey and Mayor 5th Extension
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Abbey & Mayor is the 5th full expansion to Carcassonne. With this expansion, players add a power and influence aspect to their game in four different parts. I've listed them in order of enjoyment.
Mayor -- The mayor piece is focused on controlling cities. The mayor's power grows as the city gains more pennant tiles. This piece can play a major role in the struggle for control that frequently takes place in large, valuable cities. As someone who enjoys competing for cities, I like this aspect.
Wagon -- Played as a regular piece, the wagon can travel from a completed area to somewhere unclaimed. This creates continuity and requires some extra vision. So far, this piece has been fun to play.
Barns -- The barn allows players to set up a super farm that grows in size as the game progresses pushing other, usually smaller, farmers out. The barn makes farm strategy important from the beginning instead of its typical end game position. However, a common complaint about farms in general is that they tend to grow too big. Those who don't enjoy that aspect of the game may not like this piece.
Abbey -- Acting as a sort of super cloister, the Abbey can be used to fill in those hard to close map features. It's a great escape valve for those who get trapped and it is also a quick way to add points. However, I think this takes away from the tactical aspect of trying to trap an opponents valuable pieces. This piece is probably my least favorite part of the Abbey & Mayor expansion.
Overall, I think this is a good expansion to Carcassonne falling in behind Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders but ahead of Princess & Dragon and The Tower. I think it will add the most to games with intermediate to experienced players.

The fifth major expansion to Carcassonne, Abbey & Mayor adds 3 new wooden piece types, 6 abbey tiles, and 12 landscape tiles. The Abbey tiles act as Cloisters but do not have to match adjacent tiles and they complete adjacent features when placed. Mayors can be placed only in cities, with their strength determined by the number of pennants in the city. Barns allow players to score fields during the game rather than just at the end. Wagons are placed on roads, cities, or cloisters, and can move to an adjacent open feature when their current feature is completed.

My family got this game for Christmas several years ago, and we're hooked! Our game board has been in constant use since then. The first time through is slow as you figure out the rules and strategies, but after that, it's a blast. A combination of both skill and luck, Castle is a different game each time you play it (based on how the tiles are drawn) and the perfect competition for two players. My dad and I have Castle tournaments when I visit my parents, and it can be anyone's game! Highly recommended for people who enjoy other two player games like chess, checkers, backgammon, and cribbage.

Game Description: The imposing silhouette of Carcassonne sits like a throne in the Light of the setting sun. The city also acts as a fortress, protecting those who live there with its inpenetrable walls. Visit the city to discover its many features and to learn why it is so magnificent. An exciting tile-laying competition between two players. Inside the castle walls, the city grows as the players place tiles and their followers: knights to guard the towers, heralds to spread the news, and merchants to sell their wares in the markets. The player who makes better use of his followers will lead the race around the castle wall, which is also the scoring track for the game. There are several items waiting on the castle wall for the first player to reach them. Each will prove useful to the player who acquires.

Blue Moon City Review

Replaced Kill Doctor Lucky and Carcassonne as our new favorite game. My wife and I love to play board games and this one is perfect. Things we like about the game.
1) Theme - different fantasy races trying to rebuild their beautiful city. Gorgeous artwork on cards and game tiles bring this game to life.
2) Well constructed - game tiles/pieces are made with quality and the cards are holding up nicely even after well over 10 games worth of shuffling.
3)Perfect Moderate Pace - Not super fast and not annoying slow. Each turn takes about a minute or so, most of the time you know what you want to do before it gets to your turn.
4) Strategy! you have to think ahead with your cards and board movement, a lot of times you have more than one option, but trust me, it isn't headache complicated.
5) Never the same game twice! - move the tiles and shape the city any which way you want, hindering movement to certain areas or creating possible higher/lower finished tile combos.
6) Not a lot of Fiddly bits. The game doesn't have you control a bunch of game pieces. I find this confusing in other games, trying to remember everything you have.
We are yet to play it with our friends, who also love the other two above games. Should be very interesting in a 3/4 player game.
****Tons of Fun!****
