Sesame Street 35th Anniversary Edition MONOPOLY® Review

Sesame Street 35th Anniversary Edition MONOPOLYandreg;

I am a Monopoly and toy collector plus I grew up with Big Bird and the gang. I own many monopoly editions but when I saw this version I was taken away with awe. This edition is plain and simply GOURGEOUS! I could go on and on forever telling you how beautiful and wonderful this Sesame Street Monopoly is but I will just go directly to the description. ENJOY!!!
BOARD: In the center is a beautiful photograph of Big Bird holding the 123 Sesame Street sign, The Count, Grover, Cookie Monster, Oscar, Elmo, Prairie Down, Ernie, Zoe and Bert. And it also has the 35 anniversary logo.
PROPERTIES: Purple: Twiddle Bug Windowbox & Barkley's Doghouse
Light Blue: Sherlock Hemlock's Detective Agency, Martians' Home on Mars & Biff and Sully's Construction Co.
Magenta: Charlie's Restaurant, Sesame Street Library & The Mail-It Shop
Orange: Guy Smiley's Game Show, Mumford's Magic Shop & Super Grover's Phone Booth
Red: The Count's Castle, Bert's Rooftop Pigeon Coop & Ernie's Bathtub
Yellow: Elmo's World, Oscar's Trash Can & Cookie Monster's Bakery
Green: Furry Arms Hotel, Sesame Street Courtyard & Big Bird's Nest
Blue: Hooper's Store & 123 Sesame Street
Each features a beautiful picture of a different Sesame Street character (on the board not the deeds).
RAILROADS: Oscar's Taxi Service, Furry Monster Ferry Line, Bus Stop & Sesame Street Subway
UTILITIES: Oscar's Recycling Center & Sesame Street Fire Department
INCOME TAX: $75 for tickets to Monsterpiece Theater and Buy the letter of the day 10% or $200.
MONEY: $1-Super Grover, $5-Elmo, $10-Bert, $20-Ernie, $50-Cookie Monster, $100-Oscar, $500-Big Bird. Each "signed" by the featured character.
CHANCE & COMMUNITY CHEST CARDS: Instead of Chance cards you get Block Party which features Zoe and Elmo. And instead of Community Chest you draw from Street Smarts with Little Bird. They all have great color photographs on them which is a treat other monopoly versions skip. Some examples are: Sell Bert your bottle caps collect $10, Win a disco contest with Grover collect $45, and Support your favorite non-profit organization, Sesame Workshop. Contribute $100 to help educate children around the world. Pretty cool, huh?
TOKENS: They are pewter tokens and nicely detailed. You get Big Bird, Bert, Ernie holding his rubber ducky, Oscar in his can, Cookie Monster holding a cookie, and Super Grover with his Super cape. Missing is Elmo which might not be a bad thing for the older fans.
THE BAD: Only six tokens? Why not included a purchase more tokens option like the Simpson's Monopoly has? Also the property deeds are plain unlike the Muppets and Simpson's Editions which have a color watermark silhouette on them (they do have the 123 Sesame Street logo on the back of each though). There are some MIA characters like Don Music and Roosevelt Franklin. But these are minor details that would not hurt an incredibly well done Monopoly Special Edition.
Overall this is one of the best monopoly editions ever made. This will appeal to children, adults and collectors. Educational? You bet. So in conclusion you have to buy this (of two if you are a collector). Have fun playing with your friends and young ones. Bye.

19.5 in Deluxe Crokinole Review

I purchased this board for my father for his birthday. My friends are from Canada and introduced us to Crokinole and we all thought it was very fun. Unfortunately this board is smaller than what we expected and the disks are too light. There also isn't enough room between the circle and the outer edge of the board to flick the discs effectively. The board looks really nice but was very disappointing. Unfortunately I'll probably wait for the next big holiday and buy my dad another board.

The earliest known board was made by craftsman, Eckhardt Wettlaufer in 1876 in Canada. Several other home-made boards of southwestern Ontario origin, and dating from the 1870s have been discovered since.Crokinole is often believed to be of Mennonite or Amish origins, but there is no evidence to support this. The name "Crokinole" is believed to derive from the term Croquet-in-the-hole, because of the style of game play that can be likened to playing croquet on a table with a hole as the hoop

Settlers of Catan Mega Bundle Review

Settlers of Catan Mega Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're like me, you got introduced to Catan by playing the 3-4 player 'basic' game. I learned the hard way, getting beat repeatedly by more experienced players who were allegedly my friends. Catan is a game both simple in its concept and yet incredibly complex and difficult to master. Learning it in the natural order of the expansion packs therefore makes a lot of sense. That's why, despite the fact that Catan and all of its expansions are fantastic, I cannot recommend this collection to anyone but a seasoned Catan veteran.
Getting every expansion from the get-go might encourage a lot of jumping from expansion to expansion without really engaging each expansion properly. Seafarers itself can provide years and years of game play without boredom setting in. Unless you've already played AT LEAST half of the expansions in this set, I would recommend starting modestly and working your way out to the newest expansion packs. Otherwise you may miss some of the finer points of Catan strategy. It could also be daunting to try to learn all of the rules for each expansion right away.
All that said, each Catan expansion is excellent, and this is a perfect set to buy if you already have played a lot of Catan, know you like it, and don't want to pull any punches. If you're addicted to Catan, this is the perfect set to buy. It will give you everything you need to play Catan basically forever.
A note: this is the new 4th generation set. I prefer the more muted graphics of the 3rd generation, but that is purely aesthetic preference.

Settlers of Catan 3rd Edition 5-6 Player Expansion Review

Settlers of Catan 3rd Edition 5-6 Player Expansion

Over the years, I have played this game countless times, and each time it's been a blast. Build towns to collect resources when that number is drawn. Use those resources to build more towns or draw special cards. My favorite part of this game is resource trading among players. It's common to hear things like "I'll give you two wheat for a sheep", and it sometimes escalates into a full blown bidding war among players.
The best part about this game is that it's random every time. The board is randomly placed and that makes people's strategies change every time they play. I highly recommend this game to anyone.

We thought this was all about Disney but we soon learned that it had basically only one category that focused on Disney. All other categories are just like the regular Trivia Pursuit. We love Trivia Pursuit but we were a bit disappointed as we thought all categories would be somewhat related to something Disney.

Honor of the Samurai Review

Honor of the Samurai
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
During the 16th century, Japan was immersed in its bloody Sengoku period, an anarchic time of warfare and intrigue between daimyos, powerful warlords roughly the equivalent of European barons.
In Honor of the Samurai, players are samurai warriors, each supporting a daimyo and striving to accumulate the most honor. Following a trend of recent years toward cards rather than a game table, actions in the game are resolved through disposition of cards on the table, strategic use of cards in hand, and periodic rolls of the dice.
"The Card Game of Intrigue, Honor and Shame" is the subtitle of the game, and aptly summarizes its action. While striving to acquire the most honor, players are constantly faced with the temptation to use dishonorable means, such as assassination, theft, or firearms. Success depends on a careful balance between honorable and dishonorable actions.
Game components include 110 cards, six custom dice, and a succinct rule book. The illustrations on the cards are beautifully rendered, depicting such things as daimyos, wives, armies, ancestors' weapons, and house guards. They are also on a heavy, laminated stock, helping to ensure that the game will hold up for a long time.
The standard-shaped dice (six-sided) are marked with the actual symbols of Japanese noble houses, each of which conforms to a different number. These are easily recognizable, e.g., the symbol for "1" is a red circle, for "2" a pair of parallel wavy lines, for "5" a five-sided lotus flower.
Play moves quickly, with a single turn rarely taking more than a few minutes. An entire game can be played in an hour or so, and the number of honor points needed to win the game can be reduced, shortening the length of play.
Fortunes can change quickly in Honor of the Samurai. In one turn a player can declare his daimyo to be shogun, overall warlord of Japan, and in the next that shogun will be deposed, slain in battle or dispatched by a ninja assassin. Then the title of shogun passes to the victor, or remains in contention.
Gamewright rates Honor of the Samurai as being suitable for ages 10 to adult. Indeed, after a few turns of play a reasonably clever child 10 or older can master the rudiments of the game and will enjoy intriguing with the best of them. Children and adults will also learn about the rich, violent history that is elegantly infused into the rules, and summarized in a brief section at the end.
Honor of the Samurai delivers on all its promises, and is destined to join the ranks of the best fast-paced strategy games.

I bought this game for my 6 year old, and we have had more fun playing it. The rules have been simplified just right for younger children to play without losing a lot of the fun for adults. I especially liked the use of lower denominations on the money - $1, $2, $3, $4, and $5. This allows my son to act as bank and has been wonderful practice for him in simple math and making change. Each card also contains interesting and educational facts about different sea creatures. I would defiantly recommend this game!

Axis & Allies Pacific Review

Axis and Allies Pacific
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just completed playing one game with my 45 yr. old brother as the allies, and I have to say that I enjoyed the game. I used to play regular A&A quite often with him, so I think the test of wills was a fair comparison.
We learned early on, that it is critical to use CAP to slow enemies movements or to channel them into specific sea zones. If you play Japan, prepare to execute flawless turns, because the game is fairly unforgiving to mistakes on their part. Conserve your carriers! They are irreplacable.
At 75 IPCs, the industrial might of the US is truly impressive. Even after getting my clock cleaned on turns one and two (at the expense of the entire Japanese Eastern Pacific Fleet), I was still able to build 2 carriers, 2 destroyers, 2 transports, a sub and a marine! Japan can expect only to delay the US, not defeat them. A better strategy is to press the Aussies and Indians.
The game is better than vanilla A&A and the tactical possibilities are truly interesting because players tend to do a lot of unexpected things on every turn. Combat Air Patrol, US Marines, air and naval bases, submerging subs and destroyers added greatly to the pleasure of this game.
This one's a squid's dream, boys and girls and we will be playing it again I'm sure. Kudos to AH and Hasbro!

Axis & Allies Pacific is the second expansion to the Axis & Allies game system. In this game, three main powers (Britain, Japan, and the US) square off against each other against the backdrop of the Pacific ocean. Japan is trying to grow her empire, either through military might or by holding off the Allies long enough to consolidate her gains. The game adds a few new rules and a few new twists to the established A&A game system. Naval bases and air bases turn small, meaningless islands into vital strategic holdings. Convoy zones allow a single submarine pack to cripple an economy. The Chinese forces, while limited, are hard to crush. Japan gets her kamikazes, but will it be enough to hold off the vast economic power of the USA?

Starfarers of Catan Review

Starfarers of Catan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have loved Settlers of Catan since I first played it. I was thrilled when I first saw Starfarers (I loved the retro Flash Gordon look).
Unlike the other Settler games, this one actually uses plastic and not wood for many of the pieces/parts. My friends can be quite rowdy late at night but in the years I have had the game, no piece has ever broken.
Play is a little different than in other sets. Its sort of like Seafarers with lots of little islands. Development cards are there (although there are some new resources) and they have been joined by encounter cards where you deal with alien races, traders and pirates. Play lasts a little longer than the original but is comparable to Cities & Knights.
The board is beautiful and rather large (no small contained hex this time). Players ability to move and fight are modified by upgrades to their central ship/die roller/neat thing. There is currently an expansion set for adding up to two more players which I just picked up (so I don't know how it affects play yet).
All in all, this is a really fun addition to the Settlers world of games (I have eight of them so far). If you liked the original and wanted a bit more of a challenge, this is a great addition to your game closet.

Duel of Ages Worldspanner Review

Duel of Ages Worldspanner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Imagine that the gods became bored, picked up a handful of people from throughout history, and tossed them into an arena to fight for their deific amusement. This, then, is Duel of Ages. It is a board game with a dynamically-constructed hex grid and the ability to play as Beowulf with a flamethrower and and ATV. Silly, yes, but a lot of fun and some good strategy, too. Different historical characters have different attacks, defenses, ranges, etc., and with more than a few players the game plays out not so much like a duel but like a tiny war. There is enough dice-rolling to inject some fluidity into the game, but enough stat-based fighting to make sure it doesn't become random. A good mix of strategy and classic gaming. Pick this one up.

Nexus Ops Review

Nexus Ops
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first glance, the game looks like some nasty oldie from the 90s that never got anywhere because no one liked or bought it. But, it isn't. Definitely not. When I first opened the box I found bright neon colored plastic pieces in bags- and they looked very good, adding to the alien feel of the game. Also, instead of a plastic tray to keep the 4 multicolored armies separated, it only comes with a punch-out cardboard divider that is OK, but a plastic tray would be best. The gameplay itself excels over these flaws. In the game, you must occupy mines in order to order to make rubium (the monetary unit of the game) to buy better units to do battle. There are in total 6 different types of units. The three weaker and less combat-ready ones are essential in order to gain economy while the three stronger and expensive ones won't be making you any money. Gameplay is smooth and a few turns into the game and you'll be slugging it out on a gameboard that will never be the same- that is, the game is made of individual hexagonal tiles that make sure no game will have a similarly configured board. There are different types of terrain that will give bonuses in battle or that some units cannot set foot on. The game especially shines through with 3 or 4 players, when everyone's just slugging it out for control of the mines and the Monolith- which grants you the right to draw two battle-boosting cards per turn. Games last about an hour or longer, and the rules are simple enough to learn yet complex enough to keep the game fresh and you thinking. The lowdown:
PROS
-GAMEPLAY- very smooth and balanced for all players- if you lose a battle you get to draw a card that will help you in battle later. Though Nexus Ops will not provide an hours-long epic it will easily kill an hour or two of your time. There is actually a variant where you can play with yourself that is quite a challenge (not in the manual, but on the Internet).
-VARIETY- with six different units you'll never be defeating your opponents in the same way. As always dice-rolling determines the victor and loser. The game board is also randomly configured each game.
-SETUP- unlike Risk, it takes only a few minutes.
-delves a little bit into managing money effectively: since buying units is virtually the only way to obtain any, your child will learn that just massing rubium dragons and lava leapers (the two strongest units in the game) will not win game.
CONS
-the box should come with a plastic divider tray rather than a punch-out cardboard divider
-the monolith, a raised piece in the center of the board, won't last too long being made of flimsy cardboard, and also obscures the view of the hexagons around it. However, don't worry; the rest of the game is made from thick, durable cardboard.
-as I have mentioned before, the map is different each time you play. However, this changes absolutely nothing gameplay-wise. So the game may get repetitive map-wise.
-the plastic playing pieces are rather small, and adults may have difficulty distinguishing between some alien races (especially two particular ones; the rest are easily distinguishable).
-the game must be played on a level surface, maybe only at home rather than on a plane or monorail. Since the tiles and therefore the board is not all in one piece, they can easily slide away from each other.
-others have complained about the stench, and so shall I. The inside of the box smelled like old cardboard (like the toilet paper tubes), but nothing so overwhelming that you'll want to quarantine it. The pieces also smell like new plastic, but this scent was more subtle.
UPDATE: This game is no longer in print, and will probably never be in print again. A brand new copy of Nexus Ops usually start from upwards of $70. Nexus Ops is a blast, but probably not worth $70. Instead, I recommend Neuroshima Hex.
