Cathedral - Polystone Review

Cathedral - Polystone

Cathedral has been around in one form or another since 1984. This is a sign of the quality of the game rules as well as the willingness of publishers to release another version. The game has been released in styrene plastic, wood, and now resin plastic pieces. Additionally there are some small run resin sets. Like chess, some owners enjoy the highest quality pieces (in which case wood is the nicest set) and others just want to play the game (in which case any set will do).
Also like chess, this abstract game is enjoyable, but tending toward the dry side. One player plays the neutral cathedral piece in the center. Then the players take turns placing buildings, hoping to cordon off corners and preventing the opponent's play in that area or surrounding lone pieces and capturing them. The winner of the game is the one who has fewer building units left, i.e. the number of building squares.
Without any element of chance, the game has very deep play possibility. The one who plays first has a slight advantage, so tournaments often suggest playing a best of two series. With both simple rules and serious strategy, the game has long lasting appeal to both beginners and serious gamers alike.

Think "Connect 4" on a multi-3D level. Makes you feel intelligent and stupid simultaneously. The ability to twist the interior rods really makes you think ahead. My chess-loving husband plays this as often as possible. There are several similar stacking games, but this is by far the best mind-bender; plus it's beautifully crafted and made to last. Definitely worth the purchase.

Gigamic Pylos Classic Game Review

The premise of this game is simple: you and your opponent each have 15 spheres, and you are working to build a pyramid together, one move at a time. To win, you want your opponent to use his/her spheres before you use yours, so that you can place the last sphere on the top.
But rather than just continually taking from your reserve of spheres, you want to make moves that either allow you to move a sphere from one place on the board to another, or another move that actually lets you take one or two spheres back. At the same time, you don't want to let your opponent have these openings.
(A sphere can be moved within the board if it goes 'upstairs', that is, on top of the center of a 2x2 of spheres. You can take one or two of your spheres back when you make a 2x2 where all four spheres are your own color. You could almost imagine yourself using similar strategies as you use when playing the 'box' game on paper. As you avoid some situations, you will find yourself trying to put your opponent in dilemmas where whatever they do will leave you an opening.)
So the principles are easy. However, I also think that the game situations are somewhat limited as a result, and while this is a great way to spend 10-20 minutes, it won't be as interesting as other games.
This is a very good game for children who are good at seeing visual relationships; I would expect that any child that enjoys Othello will also enjoy this.

Two players are given 15 marbles each. They take turns to make a pyramid. Simple rules allow them to save their marbles. The winner is the player who saves the most marbles and is thus the last to complete the pyramid.

Family Games cathedral - travel Review

I purchased my first Cathedral game set twenty-five years ago in a Fairbanks, Alaska bookstore. The simplicity of rules combined with nuances of strategy made it the favorite of my family. All ages could play one another, and as sports commentators so often say, "On any Sunday, any player could beat any other player." So I was delighted to find a travel-size set to go on vacations without risking raising the wrath of the trunk space regulator. In twenty-five years no one has tired of the game. And I love the fact that it doesn't require any batteries!

This go-anyplace travel version of the popular Cathedral game is played within the borders of a medieval walled city, two rivals battle to gain the most land space by strategically repositioning their building pieces back on the board. The player who is best at blocking and out-maneuvering their rival will claim victory. Warning Chocking Hazard! Contains small parts, not for children under 3.

"Cathedral" is a simple game to learn and one that will be quickly picked up by anyone who tries it.
The idea is to take over as much territory within a medieval town's walls as possible. You do this by placing your various buildings in strategic places within the playing area.
The game itself is made from wood, and the pieces are quite a good size. As such, they are durable and will last ages before any wear and tear begins to show.
I personally found myself quickly becoming bored with the game, as it does not seem to have the endless variety that a game such as chess can provide. The relative movements and strategies you can develop are fairly limited, in that sense.
However, "Cathedral" is different and it is simple. If there are only two players, it makes a quick, fast game to fill a few minutes with. However, should your inclincations be toward longer, more in-depth games, this is not the best of them.

Imagine yourself living during Medieval Times, the period of history referred to as the Middle Ages. In the game of Cathedral, you are a rich and powerful landowner. The playing board represents the site of the walled city. Two sets of playing pieces symbolize both the buildings and the two opposing forces who battle to gain control by strategically positioning their building pieces back on the board. In this game of competition and rivalry, victory goes to the player who is best at blocking and out-maneuvering their opponent. This wooden game includes 1 board, 28 buildings, 1 cathedral, and rules. Two players. Ages 8 and up.

Easy to learn, but not so easy to win.
This is a great game. Also a relatively quick play.
One thing is that all the parts are separate (marbles, wooden parts of the board, etc.) so...this may not be the perfect option if you have very young children still at home. I could easily see things getting lost.
Still...highly recommended, especially if you like strategy games.

A fast and fun strategy game that is both simple and sophisitcated at the same time. The object of the game is to create a row of five marbles, in any direction. But the mind twisting part is that you will also twist one of the four game blocks as part of your move. This causes the game board to constantly change, making for a perpetually challenging game experience, both for beginners and masters alike. For two players.Play time is approx. 3-30 minutes.Suitable for age 6 and up.

Quarto Classic Wooden Board Game Review

Who would have thought that a game with such simple rules could be so fascinating to play? This game is satisfying for all levels of players -- from little tykes to brain-heavy mathematicians. When you find an opponent who is about as careful or alert as yourself, you will be surprised how addictive this game can be. "OK, just one more game..."
Not only is this game mentally stimulating and fun, but it is very attractive and well made. The size and finish of the wooden pieces make it something you will want to leave out for guests to notice. Perhaps they will ask you what it is, so that you can teach them the game!
This would make an excellent gift.

I wrote this review in the year 2000, and at that time, I had only the experience of playing the game at a friend's house. Many years later, I purchased one for myself, and was disappointed with the reduction of quality. The original pieces were probably made with maple, and were tooled and finished with a high degree of craftsmanship. I think they also had felt bottoms, which is a nice way to ensure that you place the piece right-side-up. The set that I ordered had pieces made of some cheaper softer wood, and the finish was rough and uneven. A clever player can now cheat by placing a "hollow" piece upside-down to conceal the fact that there
were no solid pieces left to play. That is, no felt bottoms.
I still love the game, but am tempted to throw away the pieces and turn out some of my own in by basement workshop.
April, 2010
