Kidztoyz Kawasaki 49-Key Musical Keyboard Review

Kidztoyz Kawasaki 49-Key Musical Keyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted a more "serious" keyboard for my 3 1/2 year old, to replace his LeapFrog® Learn & Groove Musical Table. This didn't come with a stand, but he just puts it on the coffee table when he uses it.
Although I had to show him (a few times) what the different buttons do, he caught on very fast. Any young child who can follow directions should be able to use the record and play feature by himself. He loves to make up his own songs.
There are ten instrument buttons: piano, trumpet, organ, guitar, violin, flute, bell, xylophone, saxophone, and music box (which is just tones). The guitar does sound like a guitar, and each selection has itsown distinct sound, but the piano sound is poor quality compared to other keyboards. However, this is not a professional keyboard, so I wasn't surprised.
My son doesn't use the rhythm buttons (pop rock, waltz, ballad, beat pop, country, funk, R&B, twist, fusion, tango) at all yet, but he loves the drum selections (bass, snare, hi hat, cymbal, tambourine, cowbell), and I thought they were pretty good too.
I was pleased that there is a volume control, and the buttons are perfect sizes for little fingers.
Another reason I bought this keyboard was to find out how serious my son was about playing, before I spend money on something with better overall quality. I also wanted to see how well he would take care of it.

Gulo Gulo Review

Gulo Gulo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gulo Gulo is the genus and species name of the wolverine, a rapacious beast. In this game, your wolverine is dying to eat the vulture's eggs. Not wanting to lose her brood, the vulture has set an up an alarm to tip her off to clumsy wolverines. In addition, she's kidnapped and hidden the baby wolverine.
Which brave wolverine will rescue that little guy?
THE COMPONENTS
Rio Grande Games doesn't make chintzy products. This game is beautifully made, even down to the sturdiness of the cardboard box! The vulture's nest is a carved wood bowl filled with wooden eggs in five sizes and colors. The board is a randomly assigned set of thick, two-sided octagonal tiles: one side with grass, the other with wolverines clutching an egg that corresponds to the egg colors. Wolverine player pieces in six colors accompany the set, and even those are painted in just the right places.
PLAYING THE GAME
The playing board tiles are arranged randomly, grass side up, leading to the vulture's nest. (The random element means no two games play exactly the same--nice.) A set of five tiles, also grass side up, is placed as the last set before the vulture's nest. An egg atop a slender stick--the egg alarm--is inserted vertically between the eggs in the nest.
The hungriest player goes first, turning over the first tile, revealing a wolverine clutching a colored egg. The player must then grab the corresponding colored egg from the nest without toppling the egg alarm to the playing surface. If successful, the player can move atop that tile. Subsequent players can elect to turn over the next hidden tile or simply move to a tile already turned. (That latter strategy can be based on the state of the eggs in the nest.) A player who fully topples the egg alarm must move back to the previous tile that represents the color of egg whose attempted removal set off the alarm. The eggs and alarm are then reset.
On reaching the final pile of tiles, a player removes one tile on the pile and its corresponding egg (without setting off the alarm) until the baby wolverine tile is uncovered. A player must then successfully remove one of the two purple eggs in the nest to win the game.
PROS:
* Well-made and durable game components.
* Random game tile placements changes the play each game.
* Good blend of play options for both aggressive and cautious players.
* Players who makes a mistake (or even several) are rarely left out of the endgame.
* Because little fingers can more deftly remove the small eggs, kids can beat their parents.
* Though a children's game, adults will definitely enjoy playing.
* Clever game play mixes strategy with dexterity.
* To prevent setting off the alarm when removing eggs, anxious and boisterous kids must still themselves and concentrate--a good skill to learn.
*Once played, the game is simple to later explain to others.
CONS:
* Cost is a bit steep compared with most children's games of this type, but that's almost a spurious con considering the quality of the components.
* At eight pages, the instruction book is daunting on first glance, but it contains instructions in three languages.
* In the beginning, the rules may seem complex, but running through one game will prove how easy it is to play.My son loves playing this game and so do my wife and I. Outstanding quality, excellent design, a changeable board, and easily explained rules make every aspect of this game top-notch. Even if you've never heard of it until now, you won't regret purchasing Gulo Gulo.

The wolverine Gulo Gulo is always hungry, especially when near a nest of fresh eggs. Young wolverines love swamp eggs just as much as adults, but are not as careful. Thus, junior is caught and the family has to rescue him, while getting eggs for themselves! Whoever can move along the path the fastest will collect the most eggs and rescue junior!

Phantom Force Chess Review

Phantom Force Chess
Average Reviews:

I received this chess game as a gift and have played about 15 games on it to date. It is enjoyable to watch the pieces move by themselves.
For playing a casual game, it is very challenging. There are many different levels to choose from (about 100 in total). I am by no means an advanced player (I can't think 7 moves ahead) but I am more advanced than the average beginner (my rating average on various websites is roughly 1800). That being said, I find the lower levels to be rather easy, but on the harder levels I get beaten soundly. Therefore, I would say the game overall is quite challenging. The computer also appears to strategically place its pieces on open ranks and files, rather than just attacking material (which many chess computers often do). For example, I recently offered a rook to the computer because I was about to put the computer into mate in 3 moves and the computer passed on the rook and instead defended against the threat.
The only downside is the game is loud and pieces take a few seconds to move. If you're a "good" player, it's defintely very challenging. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the higher levels beat "advanced" players with ease.

Want to play chess, but have no one to play with? Phantom Force is at the ready as your competitor. Play against this "smart" computer and watch in disbelief as the chess pieces actually move on their own! Or you can observe a fierce chess match as you watch the computer play against itself.
Game has incredible voice vocabulary that makes it easy and fun to play, game-saving memory, magnetic chess pieces that fit inside the built-in storage compartment; plus 136 levels (120 for play and 16 for analysis). Requires 6 "C" batteries, not included.

Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway: Circus Set Review

Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway: Circus Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 3 yr. old recieved this for Xmas. Let me start off by saying that I was impressed by the quality of the toy and the care of its packaging. I also thought the playboard was a nice touch. By following the outline of the track sizes I was able to connect the tracks together in no time, which is good when you have an impatient child. As I watched my child play, the first thing I noticed is that the train came off the tracks a lot. I think it's because the track is a fairly tight curve most of the time. That annoyed me more than him. He would just patiently fix it each time. Then I noticed that the giraffe, when placed in the circus car, made the car unstable and it would fall out knocking the car over as well while he was driving around the curves. This frustrated my son a little, me even more! I think it was a bad design to have a tall animal like that. However, there is a fix to that. It turns out you can fit 2 animals in one car, so if you put the giraffe in a car with one of the others, it makes for a more snug fit, adding stability to the car. The last thing I noticed was that when you're driving the train around the circle and want to go through the middle crossover section, this can only be done from one direction. Meaning, you set up the trains the right way to go through the middle, but once you've gotten to the other side, the train is now going in the opposite direction. Thus, you can't go through the middle again! This bothered my son the most and me too. I was finally able to come up with a pseudo fix. I taught him how to drive the train backwards through the middle. He was satisfied with that, especially learning to do something new with the trains. In conclusion, knowing what I do, I don't believe I would purchase this set. If you ask my son, he will tell you he is happy with it. He probably plays with the trains just as much off the track as he does on. I've seen him play with a figure 8 set with one mountain/tunnel, and that kept his interest a lot longer than this one.

I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday and he likes screwing and unscrewing the pieces into different designs. He especially likes the yellow pieces( his fav. colour). I like that it helps refine fine motor skills of finger dexterity and bilateral coordination. I am glad that is is eco-friendly an child safe. Highly recommend. Fits nice in pocketbook and diaper bag too. Keeps him busy at doctor's office, restaurants, and anywhere else you don't want them wondering around. Plan Toys is one of the few "e-zero" companies.

This is probably my 8 year old daughter's favorite "toy." Her dad is an engineer, and thus knows a lot about electronics. He said he was learning about the same things in his freshman year of college; so I hate to call it just a "toy." She loves to do this, asks everyday. She is learning a lot of the correct "jargon" like parallel vs. series. She is really looking forward to more projects!

Everything you would want to write & draw is included (NOT erasers, paint or brush). I found a dry marker eraser easily but the chalk eraser was hiding at the third Office Depot that I went to. My 5yr old grandson loves the stick figures (of him) that I draw and leave for him to find. Soon he'll have the confidence of steady hands (that he's developing with video games) and he'll be tracing his ideas for me. This is a great investment product for young minds. Maxim 5-in-1 Learning Cube Review

Maxim 5-in-1 Learning Cube
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't change my star rating or I would change it to 0. This toy is greatly overpriced and though I got it for a fraction of the cost, I recently returned it. The wooden xylophone is out of tune and not nearly as satisfying for my 20-month-old son to play with as a much cheaper metal xylophone is. The bead maze on top holds his interest the most, but the top comes off very easily when he pulls on the wires for leverage and it's way too easy to get his little fingers under it. The top is VERY heavy. After trying out the wipe off board, it is poor as well. I'm not sure why they made it black. Our wipe off markers, which we had to buy separately, hardly show up on the black board. White would have been much nicer. The peg maze on the side is hard to manipulate and the pegs constantly get stuck. The abacus is fine, but not enough to save the toy. I would never pay the retail price for this. I returned it even though I paid much much less for it. Your child will have much more fun with just about any other toy, and not have to risk crushing their little fingers. I also notice several small parts, perfect for choking hazards, that are merely glued on. NO STARS!!
One other note, Maxim recently had most of their products recalled from a local store here. I won't be buying any other Maxim toys for my family.

Looking to entertain your children at a small price? Answer: PlayDoh! We already own the George Foreman Grill which is great for our little chefs in the house and this "barrel 'o fun" is an added bonus. It's crazy to see what the minds of twin 3 1/2 year old boys and an 18 month old girl can create! The barrel contains six cans of the Doh, in various colors, along with plastic rolling pins, scissors, cookie cutter molds and hours of fun! The molds are sturdy and the scissors are so safe that they probably couldn't cut a piece of hair in half.
I have such great memories of playing with this stuff when I was small. It's nice to see some toys can stand the test of time!

Got this for my 5 year old who found my old, original Operation game at my mom's house. Thought she would love this version since she loves the Shrek movies. She loves playing this game and it's fun for adults to play too. Don't think it's really an "educational" game, and most of it is cardboard so it could get beat up pretty quickly, but we are careful about putting it away in its box and keeping the pieces in little plastic bags so they don't get lost. All in all, it's just a fun game to play with your kids. There are few companies that make a Shrek Operation and you'll see some at outrageous prices. I think we paid around $15. I've never seen in a store for under $30.

My First Uno - Where the Wild Things Are Review

I played the game with my 8 yr old nephew and 5 yr old niece at Christmas and we loved it. The game doesn't have as many game cards as regular Uno, so it was easy for my niece to understand, but still fun for my nephew. The game features colored number cards, draw two cards, and 4 wild cards. We played the game competitively, though the 5 yr old layed all her cards on the floor face up and we helped her along. It was a great learning tool because she got to work on color and number recognition, and my nephew worked on his math skills adding up the points after each round. It was great fun and I've seen multiple versions of "My First Uno" with other characters. There's one out there for everyone! PS I found it for $4.99 at Walmart.

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel & Companion Supply Set Bundle Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel and Companion Supply Set Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased many Melissa & Doug products for my grandchildren. This year, I ordered 2 of these easels: one shipped directly to an out-of-state granddaughter; the second for another granddaughter who would be at my house Christmas Day.
Grandpa and I began assembling the big "Santa-type" gifts Christmas Eve at 6:00 pm. We had completed 2 race track-train sets and table and chairs when Grandpa opened the easel box. We found no "hardware" and no clips in the box-this meant there would be "no assembly" tonight. Five grandchildren were expected Christmas morning and ALL five were to have a big gift under the tree!
I placed a call to the number at Melissa & Doug and left a message about the incomplete merchandise and my disappointment. Now I needed to find a store open to purchase a different "big" present for my granddaughter.
Granted, I should not have waited until the 11th hour to open and assemble. My past purchase history with Melissa & Doug have been flawless: their merchadise superior. I never expected anything less.
Christmas morning things were fine. "Santa" left a note on the unassembled box that an elf left the nuts and bolts and they would be mailed in 2 weeks. This was satisfactory to her.
Telephone communication began, and on Thursday January 10th, the package arrived. I opened it immediately and ALL the bolts, washers and screws were accounted for but not the "4 colorful clips". I called the Melissa & Doug store. I was not happy that the toy was still incomplete. The representative stated that the clips would be sent out. I remarked that my granddaughter would have to wait another 2 weeks for this Christmas gift and would I be compensated (I was thinking they could at least send an extra roll of paper for our trouble). I was told that "oh she can use it without the clips" and that it wasn't the fault of Melissa & Doug, but the vendor. She became very rude when I stated that the fault is with whomever forgot to pack the box with ALL parts.
This was the wrong attitude to take with a customer. I bought a new, deluxe set (not second-hand or as is) and I paid retail (not reduced, discount or clearance price). I paid, and I expect to get what I paid for when I receive the merchandise -not piece by piece, week by week. THIS WAS AN INCONVENIENCE-having to run around to buy a replacement gift on Christmas Eve, to make an excuse as to why the easel was not ready for her to take home, multiple phone calls had to be made and now I was told I had to wait again!
One mistake, I can overlook...but the second mistake accompanied with rudeness from the Melissa & Doug representative means it will be a cold day at the equator before I buy a product from this company again.

Orb Factory Magnetic Mosaics Kids Review

Orb Factory Magnetic Mosaics Kids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My two children, 3 and 5, love these mosaics. It keeps them occupied for a long time, and they have something beautiful to show everyone when they're finished. I highly recommend it, especially if your child likes to figure things out (e.g. puzzles or mazes).
If you're giving this as a present, you'll want to plan ahead, for the following reasons: 1) The cubes do not come already separated; they are in one block for each color, with the foam already cut but the magnetic backing only perforated. It takes quite a bit of time to carefully break them apart (remember, it's 600 cubes!). 2) The foam cubes had an overwhelming smell of volatile chemicals when we opened the box. This is normal with foam, but you don't want your children breathing it in. Just break the cubes up, arrange them on some trays, and let them outgas for a week or so in a very warm room that no one uses very much. When the smell is almost unnoticeable, they're ready to use.
Also, you can't complete 2 mosaics at the same time with the cubes provided. (The set only comes with one magnetic board, but we had an extra one, and my children of course want to work on these together.) For the mosaics that don't completely fill the paper with cubes, they have been able to just use different colors in some spots, but with most of the designs, even this won't compensate. I am probably going to buy another set since they love these so much.
Also, there are downloads of new designs available on the manufacturer's web site; just click the "Downloads" link on the bottom right corner of the home page. There are currently only 3 designs for the Magnetic Mosaics Kids available, and they are on letter size paper (much smaller than the designs that come with the set). But my kids didn't seem to mind!
Again, I highly recommend this toy. It has great educational and aesthetic value.

Scene It ? The Dvd Movie Game Review

Scene It The Dvd Movie Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love movies and consider myself a moderate movie buff. When I heard about this game I knew I had to get my hands on it. It was sold out at all the Nordstrom and Toys R Us I visited which only increased my interest, and after a month I finally got a copy. After playing it with some friends, I still believe that it's a great idea, but this version of the idea could use some polish.
The flaws I encountered:
--The instructions are vague in some areas. We had to make a few things up as we went along.
--The rules that are explained and the board itself contain some rules which seem silly and detract from the game. The inventors of the game clearly spent most of their time obsessing over the DVD itself and less on the gameplay.
--The text on the buzz cards is silly. After reading one or two, no one bothered reading them anymore and we just looked to the end to see what the penalty or reward would be.
--The questions on the cards are too easy. My friends are moderate moviegoers, yet when we all play in a group it's rare to get one of the questions on the cards wrong. Most of the clips are from movies of the last 10 to 20 years; they could easily increase the difficulty of the game by focusing the clips and trivia questions on some older movies. It would appeal to movie buffs more and also add some cinematic educational value.
--They did not get movie clips from all the major studios. Only 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks, MGM, Columbia, and Universal granted right to clips from their movies. That leaves out the largest library, that of Warner Brothers, and also Paramount among the major studios. And independent films? Forget it.
--Some of the film clips didn't play properly. They would just flash across the screen briefly and then the question would pop up, or we'd get stuck in a loop where the same question played over and over again no matter what we did. In those cases we had to pop the DVD out and start over.
--The game will need updating soon. It appears that there are a few hundred chapters on the DVD, each being one question, and a couple hundred trivia cards with about 3 questions each. After playing it the second time, I could already tell that we'll run through all the questions really soon.
The game does have a lot of promise. The all-play questions are great when you have a huge group of people, and everyone loves watching clips from their favorite movies. The trivia card questions are moderately interesting, but the DVD trivia questions are a riot. Some of the different types of questions include naming a movie when shown a scene in which a character is digitally erased, naming a movie title when shown two pictures that each represent one word from the title, being the first to guess a movie title as letters are gradually revealed Wheel-of-Fortune style, putting a list of four movies in chronological order, and answering a trivia question after watching a movie clip. In fact, it's nearly as fun (and some might argue that's it more enjoyable) to dispense with the board and game pieces and just put the DVD on when friends are over and just answer questions.
All in all, this game will appeal most to the average moviegoer with a DVD player. For movie buffs or fairly knowledgeable moviegoers, the creators or someone else should iron out the kinks and come out with a more advanced version of this game. I'd buy that in a second.

Race your friends around the game board as you rely on observation, memory and puzzle solving to crack over 1,000 on-screen and trivia card challenges! The DVD features scenes and images from your favorite TV shows, movies, musical artists and athletes. MTV, Disneyland, PlayStation 2, Austin Powers, American Idol, Kim Possible, the Rugrats, the Olsen Twins, and M & M's are just a few of the many subjects featured on the Trivia Cards. Cool new categories include Distorted Reality and Funhouse Mirror, and plastic playing pieces feature a cell phone and a skateboard. It's a great party game to play with your friends, but you don't have to be a kid to compete - challenge adults to see how hip they really are! The first one to Final Cut, wins the game. Game includes DVD, Trivia Cards, Buzz Cards, Category Reference Cards, Flextime game board for long or short games, 4 collectible game pieces, 2 dice and game instructions.
