Derivation Review

Know what the acronym "NATO" stands for? Where did the word "Mesmerize" come from? How did alcohol come to be known as "booze?" In this new bluffing game one must either know the correct answer, or be able to creatively fabricate it. A little knowledge can go a long way in this game. Half the game is based around the origins of words, titles, and expressions. A player reads a card aloud which asks a question about a word or phrase and then the other players give the answer on a piece of paper, whether they know it or not. They then hand the answers to the person who read the card, who lists all of the answer aloud including the correct one he has written down. "Okay, the origin of the word "Hocus-Pocus. A chant from a children's book by T.R. Albert in with witches chanted "hocus-Pocus" around a large caldron to finish a spell? Or, A stage name of a famous 17th century magician, who created it out of nonsense syllables he chanted to distract his audience? Or perhaps, from a Greek phrase Hokkus Practus est, which means to be full of sorcery? If you guess a wrong answer, the person who wrote it gets a card with a letter on it which eventually spells "D-E-R-I-V-A-T-I-O-N" at which point that player wins. If you guess it correctly, YOU get a card! If no one picks the correct answer, then the reader gets a card.
Other games have been made around this theme such as the classic Balderdash and Wise and Otherwise, but this game is definitely more educational and requires a bit more thought. It really helps to know a little about history, government, and language, at least enough to fake it! The other half of the game consists of 3 equal parts being a charades/pictionary hybrid in which people try to guess the word or phrase based on acting/drawing. Another 3rd is where a person describes the phrase/word orally to the target, but without saying any of the words he is trying to make them guess. Another 3rd is fortune where one can win and lose cards at random.
This game is definitely aimed at Teenagers/Adults who have some interest and knowledge in words, government, and history. This game intrigues and educates along with being enjoyable. I usually like to use what knowledge I can in a game if it can help me. If I want to play a game where knowledge won't help me in the slightest, I play balderdash, if I want something which tests by metal, I play derivation or a strategy game.
As for quality of pieces and box, it is very pleasant. All the cards are printed on good quality paper with bright colors. Even the sheets for writing down answers and the rulebook are in full color. High production values, and the box is quite sturdy.
The only thing I can fault this game for is the rules can be a bit sparse in places, such as guessing a word correctly. The rules do not state how correct an answer must be in order to be correct. Such as in the above example. If they say simply "came from a magician." Is that correct? Or would they have to state that Hocus-Pocus was his stage name to be correct? Perhaps even include when it came from? That is a large shade of gray in the game, which comes along with a few others. The players must make house rules about this, which can be a source of some slight argument, which is to be resolved by the person whose turn it is. Any dispute makes a game less fun, but these events don't come up often enough to really harp about it too much.
All in all, I have enjoyed this game each and every time I have played it and would recommend it to anyone who is creative, has some knowledge in the humanities, and has a streak of mischief about them. I must stress however that for much of the game one doesn't need to know anything about the subject, and with a bit of skill and luck, can complete with those who do have a clue, which makes it more fun for those who are a bit lesser on the age spectrum. Have fun!

Bamboo Collection Magnetic Color Tiles, Colora Review

Bamboo Collection Magnetic Color Tiles, Colora
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this not being really sure what type of 'game' might be played with it, and basically just took it out of the box and left it out as decoration on a table. My kids, 5 and 7, consistently come back and start playing with it, moving the pieces around to make actual pictures or just patterns. The wood is smooth and nice to handle, very relaxing. This would make a very nice desk 'toy' for an office person too.

My Little Pony "Ponyville" Advent Calendar Review

Bought this calendar for my daughter because son had Lego calendar and was trying to find a like "girl" calendar. The calendar was cute, but don't expect a lot of ponies - it comes with only 3, and the 3rd one was on the last day. Lots of hats, cups, shoes, plates, food and other accessory items the rest of the days. Overall it served its purpose and I was satisfied.

The Game of Life: Collector's Edition Tin Review

The Game of Life: Collector's Edition Tin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this game with the intent of replacing my very bad shape old version. In the old version of the game you could "Play the Market." Don't expect to find it is this version. There is no playing the market. Don't expect to have a "Day of Reckoning." This doesn't work as it does in the original. Now you draw cards for careers rather than spinning the wheel.
This candy coated, politically correct version of the original made me sick. This was not near as much fun to play as the original. Many aspects of the game have been removed. Keep playing the old version, or buy one at a garage sale. You will have much more fun. I give the old version a five of five.
Bottom line, if you liked the original game, don't buy this one, unless you need replacement cars/pegs.

Bratz X-Treme Skate Boarding RC ßCloe 27 MHZ Review

Bratz X-Treme Skate Boarding RC ßCloe 27 MHZ
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this doll and it's the most expensive doll ever! That price label of twenty-nine ninety nine is just..well..WOAH! But at last I have it now, and it was so worth it! Usually MGA "big up" the Bratz dolls 4 all they're worth, with over-advertising and all that, but I feel this doll has been UNDER-advertised! O_O (That was a surprised face!) And that's really saying something!
I thought (cos of the box) that Cloe just did wheelies and 360 degree turns, but no...not just that, she can be a normal RC doll too! You can ride her forward, backwards, left and right with the cool silver joysticks. It takes triple A (AAA) batteries, and luckily we had tons of those so we were ready to start!
The skateboard is really cool and has awesome decor. The back of the box is actually a sticker sheet for you to plaster your Bratz playsets in Bratz RC X-Treme Skatboarding stickers! I've never really been into skateboarding, even though my brother has one. I only sit down on it and push myself along!!! but i still love this Cloe!!! And she has protective gear on, too! There is a pink helmet (which doesn't really fit her, but oh well!) and grey knee and elbow pads like mine!
She is one incredibly stylish skateboarder too! She has a pink miniskirt that only just covers her behind! But that is not trashy, it is the latest fashion, and she has black pantyhose and pink & black leggings (cool!). She also has the funkiest pink & black trainers ever and a top with shooting stars on, with cool capped sleeves.
She looks utterly amazing in her skateboarding outfit. I mean REALLY amazing! the pink ramp i thought could be removed can't actually be used. it is just packaging. For a second i thought there were no instructions, so if you have the same problem as me, look at the very bottom of the box, the pointy bits, then you find them! you NEED the instructions to find out how to work Cloe!
Cloe's nickname is Angel, and i can see why! Her long blonde hair is down to her knees and shiny in this collection, and is a complex & beautiful style that i'm not ever going to take out! her hot pink lipstick is really fashionable and her violet eyes are so "in"! She has black mascara, really thickly put on, and she looks gorge!
Buy her asap before she gets all sold out! a truly gorgeous doll! 100% recommended! Thank you for reading! Hope this helps! Have a nice day!!!

Dig It Review

Dig It
Average Reviews:

I have thousands of puzzles, and I'm always looking for true gems. Dig-it is one of these puzzle gems.
Each of the 60 puzzles involves 3 polyomino pieces, and a buried bone. For a move, you can lift up one piece, and then put it back anywhere it will fit. This is a variety of sliding-block puzzle.
How hard can a puzzle be with 3 pieces? Turns out -- pretty hard. There is a lot of depth to these puzzles, though, since you can often see 3-5 moves ahead.
These are a series of graded challenges, from beginner to extreme.

Dig it!Unleash your mindIt's a great day to be a dog in the park. The sun is shining, there are no cats to be seen... and the tantalizing whiff of a big, crunchy bone can be smelled from somewhere nearby. But shuffling around the patches of turf to dig it up is going to require creativity and cleverness. That's no problem for a smart canine like you: The challenge will only make the reward that much more delicious, so get out there, think it through and dig it!

Monopoly - Deluxe Anniversary Edition (1984) Review

Monopoly - Deluxe Anniversary Edition (1984)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The board itself looked clean, but a little dingy and had a couple annoying black specks. It doesn't look *brand* new but more like the 20yr old set I presume it is. Although half the tokens were silver and half were goldish and a bunch of extra plastic houses (presumably from a regular monopoly set) were thrown in, all the pieces in the Deluxe Edition were accounted for (32 total wooden houses and hotels) and the money, cards and info booklet were in excellent condition -- no rips or folds or tears. Overall, a charming deal in good condition.

Wild Life DVD Game Review

Wild Life DVD Game
Average Reviews:

The video piece of the game is informative and entertaining for various ages 6 and up. Some questions as basic as "how many animals did you see on the video clip?" Some required technical knowledge not provided until after the correct answer was given. Excellent video clips of animals in the wild. Hundreds of questions shuffled on the video.
We found the board game piece of it confusing and are likely going to modify the game to be video only, declaring the winner to be the one with the most correct answers.Tore the board upon taking it out of the box.

Our 5-year-old son had a school bus magna doodle that he just used and abused. It was on its last legs so we put this on his birthday list and he got it. He loves the Lightning McQueen car and the tracing stencils. The frame is very solid. There's a post to keep the car on the board but I wish there had been some place to put the stencils too. They keep getting separated.
A good choice for kids who like doodle pros and Cars.

Scorepad - Chickenfoot & Mexican Train Review

Scorepad - Chickenfoot and Mexican Train
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Be smarter than I was if you order this score pad!! My family loves the Chicken Foot and Mexican Train games, and we had used up our score pads. I thought it would be a fun little thing to add on to another purchase I was making on Amazon, so 'splurged' on the $4.88 score pad. I was astonished when UPS pulled up with a good sized box from the game company. The box was 12 x 12 x 5, stuffed with paper, and lost inside all that space was the little pack of 5 x 7 score cards. I *should* have not been in a hurry that night and taken more time to notice it was not included in my free shipping items. So just be smarter and know that it will cost you $9.12 to have this item, with shipping almost equal to the cost of the pad itself. With 50 sheets on the pad, it is almost 20 cents per sheet of score card. Not very 'green' to have UPS come deliver a box for an item that weighs just 3 ounces and could easily fit in an envelope. Won't make this mistake again!

Risk Star Wars The Clone Wars Edition Review

Risk Star Wars The Clone Wars Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really loved the Lord of the Rings Trilogy edition of Risk, and so I was looking forward to the Clone Wars edition. Physically, the game is about the same quality--overall pretty nice but I'm not crazy about the little plastic pieces, which seem even flimsier than the Trilogy game, and much more likely to tangle up together. But that's not a big issue. It's the gameplay.
First off, in a 4 player game, 2 players are good (Republic) and 2 are evil (Separatist), and you are not allowed to attack your own ally. (Gosh, there goes half the fun of Risk right there!) I've yet to come up with a strategy that lets the good side win. During the game, the Separatists have a one-time opportunity to invoke "Order 66". When this happens, each and every planet (territory) in the Republic is checked against a die roll, and a losing roll means the planet becomes Separatist. In every game I've played so far, this wipes out the Republic. Not only have you lost the territories themselves, but all their troops turn against you. It's maddening to be playing the Republic, building up for a great crushing attack and blip, here comes Order 66, bye bye lovely troops. Once issuing Order 66, the Separatists must then place the Emperor (a special piece) on a planet, where he must remain, and the Republic will automatically win the game if they take this planet. But I have yet to get the Republic to recover enough to strike at the Emperor.
The dark side just has too many advantages to make this game fun to play. In the LOTR Trilogy edition, evil starts out stronger, but with good strategy, good can still win. But I just can't figure out the strategy here to make things even.

Played with my wife and an our 11 year old. The game was a tad difficult to assemble, but looks cool when you have fully assembled. The directions are a little difficult to understand, not completely intuitive. That being said, we got moving and took our turns trying to climb to the summit. For me, it was probabaly as challenging the real mountain to win this game (but it was a lot of fun trying).
