The Game of Life: Collector's Edition Tin Review

The Game of Life: Collector's Edition Tin

I purchased this game with the intent of replacing my very bad shape old version. In the old version of the game you could "Play the Market." Don't expect to find it is this version. There is no playing the market. Don't expect to have a "Day of Reckoning." This doesn't work as it does in the original. Now you draw cards for careers rather than spinning the wheel.
This candy coated, politically correct version of the original made me sick. This was not near as much fun to play as the original. Many aspects of the game have been removed. Keep playing the old version, or buy one at a garage sale. You will have much more fun. I give the old version a five of five.
Bottom line, if you liked the original game, don't buy this one, unless you need replacement cars/pegs.

The Game of Life: Star Wars - Jedi's Path Review

The Game of Life: Star Wars - Jedi's Path
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the game "Life" -- choosing your path and seeing if you can beat the other players to Happy Acres Retirement Home. . .This game only bears a passing resemblance to that version of the game. I love Star Wars, and was looking forward to taking the Jedi's Path but when I played it with my sisters we ended up having zero fun. Our ages are 15, 19, and 22. (Just to put things into perspective) First, I will give basic info about the game and then more on our experience. . .
The box contains: the Gameboard, a Spinner, 4 Padawans with stands, 24 Mission cards, 24 Lesson cards, 12 Jedi Master Cards, 12 Lightsaber Cards, 24 Logic Skill Tiles, 24 Intuition Skill Tiles, 24 Dark Side Tiles, 24 Energy Skill Tiles, 24 Fighting Skill Tiles, and 4 Plastic buildings (Jedi Council, Tatooine Buildin, Galactic Senate, Jedi Dart Ship).
In Gameplay you choose out of three paths, Clan Kaadu, Clan Gundark, or Clan Bantha. Each path has a varying length, but if you take shorter path, you may not collect enough skill tiles to pass your tests. If you fail your test you go back to start and have to try the same clan again. If you land on various spaces you can gain Skills or lose Skills, etc. After the trials you move along and then there is the first chance to fall to the darkside -- its a shortcut but when you use that route you take at least one darkside tile (sometimes more) and can only get rid of it by being Redeemed. Some Dark Side spaces let you steal from other players so it is a pretty popular route. There are major points in the game like getting a Jedi Master and a lightsaber. Different Masters let you enhance different skills (Intuition, Energy, Logic, or Fighting) and different lightsabers do about the same.
So you work along the board and get to the finish and if you have less than 2 Dark Side tiles you go to the Jedi Trials but if you have 1 or 2 tiles as opposed to zero you have to give up some skills. If you have more than 2 tiles you go to the Dark Side but you lose your Jedi Master and have to return all the tiles you gained from them.
In the end, if all players are Jedis, the person with the most skills wins, the same if everyone is Sith. Ties are broken by spinning (more on that later). If some are Sith and some are Jedi, you have to fight, if the Sith wins all three challenges then they win, if the Jedi wins one out of the three, they win.
That is essentially it. The game is designed for 2 to 4 players, ages 9 and up.
Now, on to our experience playing it. We all chose the longest path, The Bantha Clan. The first problem was the spinner, its just plastic and not made well enough to make the gameplay fair, it was always getting lopsided and not turning enough. Once into the main part of the game, my sisters both chose the Dark Side, figuring they could gain Skill tiles and be Redeemed later on to get rid of the Dark Side tiles. I tried to follow the Light the entire time. At any rate, we collected Energy, Intuition, Logic, and Fighting. Most spaces read "Spin the spinner, if that number plus your fighting tiles is more than X amount, gain more tiles." It wasn't very exciting, it didn't capture anything of what we imagined about being a padawan. In the final part of the game I was tied with my younger sister so the rules made a tie breakable by spinning the spinner. Our spins only moved the numbers one over, so Sarah won by having her number be one higher than mine. We spent most of the game arguing (and we don't usually do that) over the outcome of the spinner. The only positive thing was that the Jedi Master cards had interesting info about the various Jedi from Yoda to Mace Windu.
That was about it. Maybe for 9 or 10 year olds this game would be fun but if you're from an older set I doubt you'll enjoy it. The outcomes are easy to predict, and there is a set amount of tiles necessary from each skill so there's very little replayability. Avid collectors will want to own the game but if you're looking for great Star Wars merchandise, try Legos or Puzzles (there are some really neat ones out). This is one item I regret having (especially at its price).

Jedi Knight or Sith Lord? Awesome warrior or mystical thinker? These are thechoices players face in Game of Life: A Jedi's Path. As players move their aspiring Jediaround the board (passing tests, doing battle, learning lessons, going on missions, andbuilding their lightsabers), they build their connection to the Force in four ways--logic,intuition, fighting, and energy. Along the way, players can choose the Jedi path or theriskier/quicker "Dark Path." But be careful, once you go down the dark side, there maynot be redemption for you. At the end of the game, the mightiest Jedi and the darkest Sithsquare off to determine the most powerful Force-user in the galaxy.

My daughter is 8. We haven't seen Monsters Inc. yet, however, we have been fans of the original LIFE game and thought this might be interesting...as the commercials really depict it as loads of fun. It WAS interesting the first time we played it. The game is not as detailed as the original LIFE. There is a minimal amount of money to deal with (only 100 and 500 dollar bills) and there are no spaces on the board with instructions as in the original Life..there are cards to choose different things like which Career, House, Pet, etc...you will get in your monster life. There is no "betting on the wheel" or chances to obtain a share of another player's windfall. One good thing was there were no little plastic "people" to constantly fall out of the cars! This game allows a maximum of only 4 players at a time as well (didn't the original allow more?). I think really little kids who get bored with the "Life challenges" on the original game would enjoy this...maybe ages 4 through 7. Get this game only if you can get it on sale....

Game Of Life Indiana Jones Review

Game Of Life Indiana Jones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter received this for her 7th birthday. She became and Indy fan after playing the Indiana Jones lego Wii game. We (husband, myself and daughter) have played this game 3 times already and we all enjoy it. There are different paths for different movies and you are to try and take/save artifacts from the world and each other as well as avoid the typical Indiana Jones "traps." You collect and lose partners along that way that can be good (ie: willie, brody, jones sr) or bad partners who can take money, lose artifacts and turns for you. You at the very least pick up an adventure card and follow the directions during your turn so it isn't just a boring move to a spot game. Each game can go completely different and although there is some strategy to it, a 7yr old can just as easily win this game as an adult. The game is for 2-4 players but since you need to go thru the adventure card, it tends to go faster with more people. It can be a good 45-60min game with just 2 people. The box states it is for 9+ but I think any child with good reading skills and loves Indy would enjoy this game. At the very least, young kids could team up with a parent which would be fun as well. It is much different then most typical kids games so we all have really enjoyed this one. Although I don't think many adults would enjoy playing this with just each other, I highly recommend it for Indy-fan families!!!

The Game of Life Pirates of the Caribbean Collectors Tin Review

The Game of Life Pirates of the Caribbean Collectors Tin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this as a Christmas gift for our pirate- and POTC-obsessed boys. First, let me say it's a LOT of fun and we've played it twice in three days. But, it is important to note: while it has a pirate theme and the POTC name, it is NOT a Pirates of the Caribbean game with any of the movies' characters. If this would be disappointing to you, then pick one of the other versions which features the actual characters.
Now that that's out of the way...I would still highly recommend this game for any age group. The cover of the tin says for ages 9 and up, but our 7-year-old easily followed along and could play without much assistance (he's a good reader, but even when we needed to help him, it didn't hurt his play because it wasn't stuff other players couldn't see). The game goes quickly enough to keep everyone's attention, but not so fast that it ends too soon, if that makes sense.
At the beginning of the game, each player decides whether to start out as a sailor or a deck hand. Sailors automatically get an extra pay day and get to pick their captain before deck hands do, but being a deck hand first has plenty of benefits: you're eligible to acquire higher level vessels (which means you're slightly less vulnerable to raids, where you can lose a fair amount of money), and your penalty is often half that of a sailor's when you have to pay ransoms and other costs. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll win the game, though, since lots of players will choose to be deck hands to take advantage of those benefits.
During the game, you'll have plenty of opportunities to gain and lose money and treasure, sometimes paying to/collecting from the bank and sometimes with other players. When you land on "Life" spots, you get a life card that can often give you from 1 to 4 life tokens worth thousands of dollars in treasure. Other players can steal these (you keep them face down so they don't see the value) but you'll likely have chances to steal them back. You'll raid other players' ships, and if you have the highest spin, you'll spin again to see how much money they'll have to cough up. You'll also choose a mascot, and if you have a life token featuring that mascot, it doubles in value.
Our complaints are few and not enough to detract from our enjoyment of the game: 1) It isn't a true POTC game and 2) when your boats are on the lower part of "bridges" in the game, they slide off (we had to turn them upside down). Another big plus is the well-sized and sturdy collector's tin the game comes in. It's easy to get all the pieces back in (with some snack-sized zipper bags) and we don't have to worry about the box collapsing...we expect to play it often and won't wear out the box, at least!

Hasbro The Game of Life - Simpsons Edition Review

Hasbro The Game of Life - Simpsons Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am basing my comments on the fact I had the classic Game of Life back in the 80's. That game was fun and it was solidly made. The spin wheel was made more like a flywheel (of sorts) to give it that "Wheel of Fortune" level of spin. The extra parts would fit in so perfectly on the board and into the box that you didn't need to take apart the board. The little things they threw in the game are fun too. However this isn't the original. So here the comparison:
- It's not as solidly made. The parts of the game board you attach are made of a lot thinner plastic and aren't made to stay on the board when you pack up back in the box.
- The spinning wheel is a travesty of design compared to the original. It's just a plastic wheel you drop in it's place. No effort was made to reduce friction and give it that "flywheel" feel.
- The game is still fun in spite of all this.
This Simpsons version of course adds the flavor of Springfield to the mix. Many of the landmarks you recall from the TV show are there along with a mess of little details that make the game fun for fans. I won't go so far as to say it's a dream come true for major fans expecting lots of trivia and inside jokes, but it's still fun.
I can understand why it was cheaply made. Companies cut corners all the time. I don't like the fact they did so on the spinning wheel here as that does cut into the quality of the game significantly. However the rest is understandable and acceptable. All in all I still recommend this for Simpsons and Game of Life fans. Just don't spend a whole lot of money on it.

Game of Life - Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest Edition Review

Game of Life - Pirates of the Caribbean  Dead Man's Chest Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I always liked The Game of Life as a kid and picked up the POTC2 version on a whim, thought it would be a cute joke. Imagine my delight when it turned out to be a fun game!
Players are randomly assigned a captain, one of the characters from the movies, and then the adventure starts. Like the original game you encounter life's ups and downs. Eventually everyone gets a ship and at least one mascot. The goal is to get the most treasure, the best ship and be the first to retire.
Here's the really fun part. Once the pile of treasure is gone, players began stealing from each other. You can even take another player's ship! This element keeps you guessing until the very end as to who will win.
We played three games in a row the first night each one very different. Our players ranged in age from 19 - 49. I would say that some elements of the Pirate theme make this a game more suitable for mature players who can appreciate the humor in "stealing" as part of the game. There are references to other typical pirate behavior that might not be appreciated in some households. We however, were thoroughly delighted and can't wait to play again! Arrgh!

The Game of Life Twists & Turns Review

The Game of Life Twists and Turns
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Firstly, I would say that the age rating (9+) is appropriate for this game. We have played it several times and found it enjoyable each time.
How the game is played:
The lifepod and Visa DEBIT cards are a real addition to the game. I highlight the word debit because some people seem to be voicing their concerns that this game is Visa's way of getting children hooked on credit cards at a young age. I do not have a credit card, but I do have a debit card for several reasons, primarily because the world is becoming more electronic and sometimes you need a debit card (for example, ordering something off Amazon.) Another thing that may remove some worries is that there is a penalty for being in debt in the game. Every time you spin and you are in debt you get 10% of your total amount taken away. (In a way this discourages debt because you can easily lose the game this way.)
How the Game is Played:
One of the most fun features of this game is that all players do not have to take the same "Life path." There are 4 paths you can choose to start on (although you can move between all 4 throughout the game) learn it, earn it, live it, and love it.
The lifepod records everything (except for you occupation although it does keep your salary) and you have a "scorecard" which really functions only to have something to clip your "Occupation" card to.
We love the lifepod as it makes the game fun, less messy, and interesting. Each turn you put your visa debit card into the lifepod and press spin.
The goal of the game is to get the most life points. (Money, assets, children, homes, etc... are turned into lifepoints at the end of the game.)
Learn it is the area of the bored where you can get a degree and (if you desire) a PhD. Only about half of the careers actually require degrees.
Earn it is the area of the board where you have the opportunity to make money, buy cars and houses, and get promotions.
Love it is the area of the board focused on getting married and having children (and also buying cars and houses). (As a note you can ony have children if you are married even in adoptions).
Live it is focused primarily on adventure and earning life points.
Each turn you spin, collect your life points and then move your skateboard/car/sports car (whatever you have at the time) to the next space. On all 4 areas of the bored you have several crossroads you can choose to go down.
Even if you do not land on anything you still get to choose a LIFE card. Each LIFE card has 4 options (one for each area of the bored) and you follow what is said on your area.)
(Example:
Earn It: You find a wallet and return it to its owner. Collect a reward. +500 LIFE +$1000
Learn It: Fail your class in auto repair when you forget to put oil back in the car. -$10,000
Live It: You party with your favorite celebrity. +800 LIFE
Love It: You didn't see your cousin's car in the driveway and you ran into it when you backed out of the garage. -300 LIFE -$10,000.
The cards are pretty randomized although after a few turns the same things do start to reappear.
The way to win is by having the most LIFE points in the end. You choose the number of years you would like to play (I would recommend 10-20 or it gets boring) in the beginning. After the last spin you put your Visa debit cards back into the LifePod and it adds up all your life points.
Pros:
*Compared to the original Life game I have found this to be much more fun and more realistic. Not everyone chooses to get married and some people have 10 children but don't focus on careers... etc... It's more personal choices rather than just luck in this game
*The LifePod is brilliant (takes AA batteries, I use rechargeable ones for all my games.) It makes the game fun and easy to add everything up and keep score of everything
*This game seems to allure more interest from a more diverse group of players than the original board game
*2-4 Players, this is also a con, but as a pro it's fun to have some games that just 2 people can play, sometimes you don't always have a huge group
Cons:
*The biggest con I have found is with the careers. If you spend several turns focusing on earning a degree it should be more valuable than the "supermodel" who by chance (with no degree) wins the game by 5X the LIFE points. College degrees (and especially Phds should be like houses and add LIFE points every spin.
*Another con is not so much with the game as it is the idea of the game as well. It seems that American consumerism is extremely positive in this game. You can own up to 3 cars and 3 houses at the same time. Many of the cards say things such as "purchase a boat, +1000 LIFE points" while cards that read "Help your grandmother with her garden" only earn +100 points. The game seems to say that real life should be all about earning money, spending money, and all they toys you can accumulate on the way. Unfortunately in real life these things often leave people empty and lonely. While I don't see this being a big enough problem to keep me from playing the game, I am disappointed to see so much value put on material things and career advancement vs. relationships and education, especially in a family board game that would probably be purchased by families or friends trying to emphasize the value of relationships.
*2-4 players, while a pro this is also a con, I think this game would be better suited to have 2-6 players. While I can see playing on teams it could be frustrating (especially with middle school kids) if one wants to love it and the other earn it. :)
*It would also be nice if there was about double the LIFE cards as this game comes with. After a few plays the same LIFE scenarios come up again and can be a little repetitive.
Overall I would give this game a 4 star rating. Lots of fun, especially if you like the original LIFE, not too hard to understand, and entertaining for a pretty vast range of ages. Plus you can't complain when a board game can be played with as few as 2.

The Game of Life: Twists and Turns puts a new and modern spin on Hasbro's classic family board game. It is a game of choices, where players can "test drive" different lifestyles, take their chances and experience the twists and turns of real life. Jobs, money, marriage, children and all sorts of unexpected events -- just like real life, it's all here! Recommended for ages 8 and up, there are a thousand different ways to play this game, and no two games will ever be the same.Updating a ClassicLike the classic version of the Game of Life, the Game of Life: Twists and Turns is based around real-life events. You'll choose a profession at the beginning of the game, and roll the dice to progress along the board. As you progress, you'll encounter all sorts of real-life events (injected with a hefty dose of humor, of course), including marriage, houses, cars and family matters. You'll essentially live real life and make life-defining decisions, but without having to live with the consequences. However, Twists and Turns has a number of updates in store. Not only does it offer far more choices and possibilities than the original, it also has a number of new technical features that both longtime fans and newly-introduced players will appreciate greatly. The game now features a "LIFEPod," which helps players keep track of time and manage their careers, houses, cars and families with the touch of the button. The high-tech interface adds loads of fun to the game. The innovations don't stop there: each player now gets their very own Visa credit card, which they can use to spend. This not only puts a fresh modern twist on the game, but it also could possibly teach younger players about credit card responsibility at an early age. This gives educational value to an already quirky and fun game.

Game of Life 50th Anniversary Review

Game of Life 50th Anniversary
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I like to begin that the rules are a little vague especially for first time players. Even though I've played a few versions of Game of Life, some of the changes left me scratching my head.
During my first play-through with my housemates and friends, we've encounter all sorts of problems. From the very start, it was confusing. If there are 6 players or even if 3 players decided to go to college, there isn't enough bank loan paper for each player.
The next problem were the stop sign next to the orange spot. Some of the stops signs were place before the orange and some were after. So it was rather confusing if you had to stop before the sign or on the orange spot at some point. The rules also wasn't too clear if you had to get married.
Another problem was again, the bank loan, if enough players sue one player during the game, one player could potentially be in debt taking up all the bank loans. Then when players are force to upgrade their house, the player in debt will ultimately be, for the lack of better term, completely screwed because those houses are expensive.
Later on was the going back to college route, if there are six players who went to college, no one can change their job since there are only 6 jobs in the college career deck unless someone loses their job. Everyone is force to only get a salary raise instead.
Pros:
-Lawsuit, this is fun but can lead to problems with the game as I stated above.
-More squares than previous iteration.
-Nice design
-Spin to Win
-Job Raises
Cons:
-Not enough bank loans
-You have to take on College Career if you go to College
-Removal of Salary Cards
-Removal of Life Accomplishment on the Life tiles
-You have to upgrade the house
-Removal of Job perks (except Cops) such as taking money from players if other players landing on a doctor related square when you're a doctor
-The flaws I mention above
While, players can move away from the rules, I feel the game could have kept more of the original Game of Life instead of taking away some of the things that made it more fun.

If you have ever played the earlier version of life please do yourself a favor and avoid this "new" version like the blak plague. My friends and I used to play the old version every single day up to late hours. Once we learned the new version was out we ran and bought it. WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT!!!! Compared to the old version this one is HORRIBLE. It isn't fun. The new rules [are not good]. You can not bet anymore. Money isn't the way it used to be (what's with the litte pieces of carton?) Maybe if someone at MB reads this they will go back to the basics and bring back what was once a great and fun family game to play. Lucky for us we still have, and play with, our old and much better version of Life.
