The Crocodile Hunter Game Review

The Crocodile Hunter Game

Fans of Steve and the show will love this! Game play is simple. Icons of Steve and Terri move along the croc fence, but a selection of "Croc Bite" cards add Danger, Danger, Danger. A motorized Aggro the lawnmower-hating croc attempts to bump into spring-loaded game pieces, causing them to fly into the air uproariously. (not for very young children) Each Croc Bite card has interesting facts about crocodiles. Good on ya, Hasbro!

Harry Potter Whomping Willow Game Review

Harry Potter Whomping Willow Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of Mattel's more interesting products for the Harry Potter series, but is worth the money you spend. The game has 3 different modes that are easy enough to understand. There is a little assembly required, which isn't too hard, plus it required 3 AA batteries to run.
When you get the game, you will get 3 large tree pieces, a lot of smaller branches you can attach to the tree, (could be a choking hazard), and 4 Ford Angelica's. The cars each have a small picture on the windshield of Harry and Ron. The game also includes 4 sets of luggage, books, and owls. You will also get a set of instructions (easy to read).
Once you put the 3 large pieces of the tree together (can be a little tricky at first), you have the option of adding on the smaller branches; that depends on how difficult you want the game to be. The extra branches snap into play very easily and any extras can be stored inside the box.
The game, as mentioned, above has 3 different modes. Before you pick a mode, you can set the tree to BASIC (the tree will rotate slowly), and ADVANCED (faster and more random). The basic object of the game is to use the cars to grab objects off the tree as it rotates and moves. The cars have exhaust coming out at the end that is used as handle. You grab objects using the long antenna.
The TIME mode is played by each player taking a turn to grab all the luggage; there is no time limit, but once you finish and stop the tree, it will sound car horns telling you how well you did (5 is excellent, 1 is poor). The VS mode allows 2 -4 players to play at the same time. The object is to obtain one piece of luggage, a set of books, and an owl before the other player. The FREE-FOR-ALL mode allows 2- 4 players to play. The goal is to get as much luggage before your opponents. Of course, in all these modes, if you knock an item off or drop it, you have to put it back on the moving tree with your hands.
The tree, of course, makes a lot of creaking and grinding sounds while turning (don't worry, it's suppose to), which just adds on to the fun. This game is a lot of fun, but not sure about the educational value. It can help develop your speed and coordination, but that's about all. The pieces seem to be quite durable, but if you drop the tree, it feels like it could damage a lot of the branches.
This game would be great for your next Harry Potter party or a great display in a room. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Myst Puzzling New Board Game Adventure Review

Myst Puzzling New Board Game Adventure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone familiar with the creators of Myst know that they're all for breaking the rules, and this board game is no exception. There are two pieces to represent the players, there are puzzle pieces, there are cards to deal out and a spinner to spin, and the rules are suggested but not set in stone. Essentially, there's a starter set of rules, how to use the puzzle pieces and cards and whatnot right out of the box, and the creators invite you to make up your own rules and create your own game, much as they have done with the game Uru.
To those who like having a set of concrete rules with a concrete goal, this isn't the game for you. There's no "I win!" space to land on and gloat at your opponents. Looking at the game pieces, the game's rules don't immediately spring to mind; you'd actually have to read the included booklet to discover them. There's a concrete goal in the rules that come with the game, which is fine by me. I'm also a fan of the fact that I can switch up the rules a bit if I want, make the cards and point values have a different meaning, and I think it's nice to have a game promote creativity and tinkering.
The game isn't incredibly durable; the puzzle pieces are made of cardboard, as is the spinner, so young children would probably tear it to pieces, or swallow the little player markers. However, if it is played by those who are ages 10 and above (as suggested right on the box), there should be no problem. The game is made for two players, or two groups of players.
I'm not quite sure what the other reviewer was talking about, but I had plenty of fun with this game, and I will have plenty more. My friends like to call me up with new ideas on occasion, saying, "Why don't we play it like this next time?" and I'm always happy to oblige. I find it fun and not the least bit boring.

Game Of Life Indiana Jones Review

Game Of Life Indiana Jones
Average Reviews:

My daughter received this for her 7th birthday. She became and Indy fan after playing the Indiana Jones lego Wii game. We (husband, myself and daughter) have played this game 3 times already and we all enjoy it. There are different paths for different movies and you are to try and take/save artifacts from the world and each other as well as avoid the typical Indiana Jones "traps." You collect and lose partners along that way that can be good (ie: willie, brody, jones sr) or bad partners who can take money, lose artifacts and turns for you. You at the very least pick up an adventure card and follow the directions during your turn so it isn't just a boring move to a spot game. Each game can go completely different and although there is some strategy to it, a 7yr old can just as easily win this game as an adult. The game is for 2-4 players but since you need to go thru the adventure card, it tends to go faster with more people. It can be a good 45-60min game with just 2 people. The box states it is for 9+ but I think any child with good reading skills and loves Indy would enjoy this game. At the very least, young kids could team up with a parent which would be fun as well. It is much different then most typical kids games so we all have really enjoyed this one. Although I don't think many adults would enjoy playing this with just each other, I highly recommend it for Indy-fan families!!!

I have really enjoyed this game with my friends. There is a lot of great mystery in the way it works. I would love to see an expansion for this that adds new places and people. It's equally as fun to play as Jessica as it is the Murderer.

One player is secretly and randomly chosen to be the murderer, the rest are detectives (Jessica Fletcher) trying to determine which player is the murderer. The murderer player wins if he/she can murder five witnesses and escape off of the game board before he/she is discovered. A detective player wins by being the first to correctly deduce the identity of the murderer, before the murderer escapes. Players mark which locations they have visited and in which order. This information, along with the living or dead status of the witnesses, is used by the detective players to deduce who is the murderer player.

Clue was the first super-nintendo game I ever bought. Personally, I happen to like this version very much. The computer players are reasonably intelligent, which I like. Secondly, it's a lot easier to click on computer players than it is to beg friends to play the board game. Also, cheating is much harder to do. And there is a new feature, the interrogation, which I think is very interesting. I was sad to see that feature later dropped from future editions (The computer versions, I mean). This game isn't quite as sophisticated as those new versions, I conceed, but it is quite fun and I've enjoyed playing it for a long time.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Perilous Parlor Game Review

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Perilous Parlor Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter received this game for Xmas as she is a big SUE fan (so am I). The first time we played the game, we had similar thoughts to other reviewers about how it is nearly impossible for Count Olaf to win. However after playing the game a few more times, we found that the game changes each time you play it AND Count Olaf CAN win.
What makes the game different each time you play is the placement of the secret passages on the board. Some placements are better for Count Olaf than others. To help Count Olaf, we also let Count Olaf choose where the game tiles should be replaced on the board when they are used. Sometimes the children just don't get good dice rolls or cannot get unfrozen. Both of these things are also advantageous to Olaf. We've also found that correctly predicting the next room the guardian goes to helps Olaf tremendously.
Since playing Count Olaf is more challenging, we now fight over who gets to play Olaf. If Count Olaf wins, it is something to brag about.
Children 8 or over (including adult children!) can play Count Olaf, or any of the children. My youngest (age 4) always plays Sunny. If your children are younger than 8, I think whether or not they will have fun playing Count Olaf would depend upon how well they play strategy games in general.

If your games of Arkham Horror have become predictable and easy, this expansion will cure what ails you. The addition of the Black Goat herald makes the game easily twice as hard. You can use the new goodies without the herald, though, if you don't want to be on the edge of your seat all game. Also, there are rules for adjusting game difficulty, which is nice.
It'll take about one game to get the new rules down. Certainly it's worth the money and time to get new cards and items that make the game more interesting and versatile.

Through the Ages 2nd Edition By Eagle Games Review

== Super short review
It's fun. Buy it.== Short review
* It's fun.
* You have to think.
* Randomness does not dominate the gameplay. You can plan ahead and react to the cards as they appear.
* Your mistakes will be punished. (Not "Age of Steam" punished, but you'll feel the pain of making stupid moves.)== Long review
I missed out on this when it was released at Essen 2006. Instead of hitting eBay, I waited patiently for the reprint. For a year, I read everything that I could find on the game, multiple times. I was pretty anxious for it, but I was worried that I was building it up too much in my mind, and figured I'd be let down.
It was everything I hoped for and then some.
The reprint itself has some production issues which are supposed to be fixed at some point. I'm not disappointed that I picked this one up though. The reprint as-is is very playable.
As for the game, you have to maintain a balance between production, science, culture, and military. If you overproduce, corruption prevents you from hoarding resources. If you don't build up your science, you can't pay for upgrades. If you don't produce culture (i.e. victory points) you can't win. If you don't keep up with your military, your opponent can punch you in the face via aggressions, or in some cases just outright win via certain wars.
Of course, you don't have anything close to resembling the number of actions and resources that you need to pull all of this off. It's a juggling act where you're trying to squeeze in just one more ball than everyone else.
The upgrades that you're competing for enter the game via a Dutch auction. They start out expensive, and drop in price until someone buys them or they are removed from the game. This mechanic is brilliant. If you absolutely need a certain card you can probably get it, but it will cost you most of a turn to do so.
You start the game with 4 civil actions, which you use for the majority of things that you do in the game. You also get 2 military actions for building troops and wreaking havoc. There are several cards that will increase one or both of these action pools. The thing that I really like about the game design is that simply pumping these up isn't sufficient to create a snowball effect. Yes, more actions are better than fewer, but if you don't have the resource production to back those action up you'll be wasting a lot of time.
The leaders and the wonders are all unique, although there is overlap between a lot of their abilities. Wonders have a sufficiently high opportunity cost that you really feel like you've earned them once they are built. Leaders are very cheap to acquire, but you are strictly limited on many you can draw and play.
Military is an arms race. If you keep up with your opponents you're probably fine. If you let someone get way ahead, the pain train is likely to show up soon. There are aggressions which let one player try to attack another. It's a simple comparison of military strength, with the option of sacrificing troops for a temporary boost (and the subsequent shrinking of power after those troops disappear). If the attacker wins, the text on the aggresion card occurs. These take the form of stealing goods, stealing science, blowing up buildings, killing leaders, etc.
Unlike aggresions, wars can backfire on the attacker. They can, however, be far more devastating. Rather than simply deciding on win/lose, the amount by which you win or lose also matters. If you have a huge military lead, wars can really hurt your enemies.
There are also colonies which can give you some nice bonuses, but at the expense of your military troops. It's an agonizing choice sometimes to attempt to win a colony, knowing that afterwards you're going to be a sitting duck until you can build your military back up.
Fair warning for those who hate downtime -- there is some here because each player-turn is taken in its entirety. You should be thinking and planning when it's not your turn though, which will speed things up. My last two full games (2-players) took two hours each. (Both were called with a few turns to play, because they were blow-outs. Figure another 15 minutes each if we were play to completion.)
If you're just starting out, and you have any gaming experience at all, I suggest starting with the advanced game. Use the simple game as a solitaire exercise for learning the basic rules. Make sure that you read the rules a couple of times before trying to teach anyone. The rulebook is a terrible reference guide, so you really want to know these rules cold before you start.
After you've read the rules twice, go read Helen Holzgrafe's excellent rules summary and errata list. It'll likely point out a couple of rules that you missed.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/30465Overall, the game is a ton of fun. I love civ games, and this is the best that I've played so far. I've only played Advanced Civ against a computer. Maybe I'd like that one more than TtA, but who the hell knows, since it's impossible to get a group to play it. I can actually get TtA to the table and knock out a couple games in an evening.

Sababa / Front Porch Bookshelf Sortie Board Game Review

Sababa / Front Porch Bookshelf Sortie Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just spent an enjoyable weekend at my friends' house, and we played this game about a dozen times. I'm hooked! We played with as few as two players (though the game recommends a minimum of three) and as many as five players, and it was always fun and balanced. The players varied in sex and age: boys and girls both, from five to forty-five. Everyone had a great time!
Each game lasts from ten minutes to thirty minutes, and the game permits a wide ragne of styles from aggressive to defensive. When you've mastered the strategy of the basic game, you can make it harder by choosing particular planes play with (actualy historical WWII fighters), each one adding individual special abilities. Not only does that provide you with an advantage, but if forces you to think about your opponent's advantages.
Game play is a mixture of strategy and guesswork. There are no dice, so there's no random chance, but you don't know which maneuver cards your opponents have, and how they'll move. You're forced to make guesses about what's most likely. That adds quite a fun mix to the challenge of forumulating your own strategy given the maneuver cards you've drawn.
I also like the high quality of the game board, game pieces, and cards. The instruction manual was well written, too, and it didn't take very long at all to figure out how to play.
All in all, an absolutely fantastic game! Highly recommended!

Carmen Sandiego USA Junior Edition (Board Game) Review

Carmen Sandiego USA Junior Edition (Board Game)

I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old son this summer because he was (and remains) obsessed with geography in general and the 50 states in particular. He loves it. The rest of us, however, don't. The instructions are inadequate and the purpose of the game is just too basic. By the way, the instructions do tell you where to begin--in the state where you live or where you are currently playing the game. My son lives for the day when we will take the game to another state so he can start in a different state. But the instructions do not say anything about how you are supposed to get to Hawaii and Alaska. And the fact that some of the states are combined into groupings has been a little confusing for my son. I think if the company had designed the board better, with less space wasted on the picture of Carmen SanDiego, the map could have been larger thus negating the necessity of combining smaller states. Anyway. We have logged a lot of hours on this game over the past few months. We've changed the rules to make it more interesting, but even so, it gets rather boring. I would give the game 1 star, but I can't discount the fact that my son does love it so much.
