King Kong Deluxe Chess Set Review

King Kong Deluxe Chess Set

I picked this up on ebay for about 100.00. Beautiful item for the Kong collector, weighs about 35 pounds and seems to be made entirely of cast resin. The board top lifts off and inside is a foam piece with holes for the various pieces. With the exception of one piece with a slight bow to the bottom all the game pieces set well on the board. The figures are sculpted to look rather like Art Deco statues of the 1930's. The black pieces represent the inhabitants of Skull Island and the White pieces are the ship's cast and crew. I especially like the board that has buildings on one side and jungle on the other. The one problem I had (other than the wobbly piece) was that I kept getting the knights and the bishop pieces mixed up as they are of similar height and both represented on the island side by prehistoric animals. (I need more practice to get used to it I guess) I'm pleased as it is a very beautiful chess set of one of my favorite movie characters. At full price it's abit much, but well worth 150.00 or so looking at similar sets.

Retail price is $475! The primal savagery of Skull Island clashes against the urban sophistication of 1933 New York as man and monster battle for supremacy on the chessboard. Kong, ruler of the dark and terrifying Skull Island, a world of tangled jungle, superstitious sacrifice and nightmarish monsters, beats his chest in defiance against the might of the industrial age. New York, urban pinnacle of the western world and symbolic of the artificial power of man, is his adversary, having taken from Kong, that which he most loves, the beautiful Ann Darrow. Scuplted by Weta Workshop's Mary Maclachlan, Gary Hunt and Ben Hawker. Item Size: approx. 10 inches H (254mm) x 15.5 inches W (394mm) x 15.5 inches L (394mm). Pieces range in size from approx. 2.75 inches H (70mm) x 1 inches W (25mm) x 1 inches L (25mm) to 3.5 inches H (89mm) x 1.25 inches W (32mm) x 1.25 inches L (32mm).

Harry Potter Adventures Through Hogwarts Electronic 3-D Game Review

Harry Potter Adventures Through Hogwarts Electronic 3-D Game
Average Reviews:

My 8-year-old absolutely *loves* this game! It is played on a 3D replica of Hogwarts castle, with electronic sounds and light effects (the sounds are an integral part of the game, introducing extra elements of chance).
You first have to build the 3D castle. This took a long time so we are keeping it set up for now. This game is a race to and through Hogwarts to get the Sorcerer's stone. It has about a million rules with a different section in the rulebook for each part of the castle, but after you've played it once or twice they are actually easy to remember. So far, it is fairly fun even for the adults in the house. It's about 3 parts luck and 1 part strategy.
It says it is for ages 8 and up, but a younger child who can read should have little trouble with it. Mine did need an adult around to review the rules the first few times.
You can play/enjoy the game without having read the books, but the game contains spoilers for book 1.

Harry Potter Wizard Chess Review

Harry Potter Wizard Chess

This is not your TYPICAL chess set. True, you can still play chess, but kids & adults alike will love this new game.
When you open the box, you will get a fold-out chess board (very durable). The board has the EXACT same colors as the chess set seen in "Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone". You will also receive two complete set of chess pieces.
Each piece was designed using the SAME sketches Warner Brother employees used to create the life-size pieces in the movie; they are COMPLETELY identical. The pieces are made of a thick-plastic type of material, so they are very hard to damage (but not impossible).
Also included in the box is a set of instructions that have easy-to-read insturctions on how to play chess. They have pictures showing the different ways each piece can move.
Whether you're a chess fan or not, if you LOVE Harry Potter, then you MUST have this chess set; makes a great decoration on any coffee table.

I got this set as a gift some time ago and have been impressed all around by the classy look, quality and design.

These chess pieces are full-sized replicas of the originals which were discovered on the Isle of Lewis off the West Coast of Scotland and which are now housed safely and securely in the British Museum of London and in Edinburgh. Many pieces were discovered and this is our interpretation of the Isle of Lewis chess set. The Isle of Lewis chessmen were featured in the movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In 1831 the sea carried away a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis uncovering a mysterious building that had been buried under the sand. A peasant working nearby found what he concluded to be a collection of Elves and Gnomes. The superstitious highlander flung down his spade and fled home in horror. Superstition in Lewis had survived in a powerful form. Thus, when the peasant first looked at the group of singular little ivory figures it was natural that they should appear as the pigmy sprites of Celtic folklore. However, he was induced by his wife to return to the spot and take the figures home. He sold them to a local collector who realized they were chessmen. There were 78 pieces in all belonging to eight or more sets; 67 are now in the British Museum and the rest in the National Museum, Edinburgh. Experts are unanimous in regarding them as the most astonishing collection of ancient chessmen in existence.

Isle of Lewis Chess Set by Studio Anne Carlton Review

These are very nice pieces and arrived in great shape. However, the pieces are much larger than the description here indicates. Here it says the largest piece (i.e., the king) is 2.5" tall. In fact, this set is two sizes larger than that, with a 3.75" king. In a way I don't mind getting more than I asked for, but they don't at all fit my board or the box for pieces I bought. So what do I return? Hmm.
That aside, a lovely set, and a decent price for this size.

To excel at this game you really need to work as a team with your real (or imaginary) partner. I love the "gotcha" element when a well played card changes everything. The basic rules of the game are similar to spades or hearts or bridge, but the spell and potion cards add a new twist. I've played this game with adults and with kids as young as six and they all love it. For any fan of the Wizardology book or the Harry Potter series, this is a must have.

The game really tests your knowledge of Harry and his world in all areas. From people to creatures, you can find out anything. The optional multiple choice made it easier when you didn't know the answer right away. I'm now going to get it myself. If you are a Harry Potter fan, and think you know everything there is to know about the first book, get this gam and find out!!

The chess set is VERY lovely, no complaints there at all. Although I didn't see anywhere in the product description that said chess board not included, I was pretty shocked and slightly pissed when I opened it up and saw no game board. It says hours of fun playin, all you need is an opponent! They forgot to mention you also need a damn game board! looks like I need to do an overnight delivery and hope it comes by christmas or I'm screwed.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Chess Set Review

Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chinese Chess Set

I got it for $50 so I was expecting it to be made of good quality materials. The moment I opened the box, I was impressed by the box that hold the chess set. However, it is very easy to break. I was taking it out very carefully. The chess board and pieces look good, but if you touch the chess board, you know it is made by low quality material. I got it mainly for collection instead of to play with it, so I am a bit disappointed with it.

The Three Kingdoms period (263-222 BC) is perhaps the bloodiest and most eulogized period of Chinese history. The best known account of this period is the historical novel ''Romance of the Three Kingdoms'' written in the 14th Century and the subject of numerous films, TV shows, manga, and anime. This deluxe edition Chinese chess set contains the major cast of characters from ''Romance of the Three Kingdoms.'' Unlike many character theme chess games in which characters are simply duplicated in different colors on each side, this set contains an entirely different case from one side to the other, giving the game a unique level of interest. Each figurine has their chess piece Chinese character molded at the base so you know which figurine is which piece. The map of the Three Kingdoms world is printed on the surface of the board adding a sense of epic battle to your game. This character version of the incredibly popular game of Chinese chess has sparked a new interestfor Chinese chess in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, and we are proud to be among the first to bring them to the United States.

Scene It? Deluxe Harry Potter 2nd Edition Review

Scene It Deluxe Harry Potter 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

While many found the first edition of the Harry Potter "Scene It" game to be either frightfully boring, or far too easy, the game-makers more than make up for past short-comings with this new deluxe 2nd edition.
This edition of "Harry Potter Scene It" includes detailed questions from the first 5 books, and the first 5 movies. Yes! -- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is included in this game! It's a real treat to have the 5th movie included within the game so soon after it's release in theatres!
There are 4 game pieces to choose from (including Fawkes the Phoenix, Buckbeak the Hippogriff, the Knight Bus, and the Durmstrang Ship). Each player chooses a game piece, and away you go! If more than 4 people wish to play, I recommend either pairing off into teams, or else grab a couple game pieces from a different boardgame (such as Monopoly) and use them instead! There's room for everyone to have fun!
The game-makers did an excellent job of creating questions that range from very easy, moderately difficult, and very hard. The majority of the hard questions usually pertain to the actors in the movies, and the logistics of the making of the films (such as "How many Ford Anglias were used in the filming of 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'?" --- "Who was the first actor cast for 'Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone'?" --- "What item did Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) give to Daniel Radcliffe during their first meeting?"). During the first edition of this game, the questions were generally too easy, which is great for kids who are playing, but not as fun for adults.
The clips shown during the DVD portion of the game are a lot of fun. Sometimes the same clip will be shown more than once, but a different question will be asked each time! Most of the time the answers to the clip questions are fairly simple. At other times it's a little more challenging, especially during the mini-games played during the "all play" portion of the game (for those who are unfamiliar with the "Scene It" game format, an All Play is when a clip or game is played in which all the players are participating together, instead of in turns. The first player to shout out the answer wins the All Play round!).
Bottom line, this game is a lot of fun for Harry Potter fans of all ages, and it's a wonderful step up from the slightly disappointing 1st edition!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Scene It Deluxe Harry Potter 2nd Edition

The popular board game that has players watching video clips and shouting out answers is now available in an upgraded Harry Potter theme. This second edition of Screenlife’s Scene It? Harry Potter game is chock full of questions, characters, and clips from the first five Harry Potter movies. Yes, that includes the recently released Order of the Phoenix.

Pop the game’s DVD into your player to start the magic and mayhem. Loaded with new clips and puzzles, this version touches on "The Boy Who Lived" to "He Who Must Not Be Named" and all things in between. There are over 1,000 questions on the 160 trivia cards, so even if you see the same snippet from the 180 on the DVD during the same game, the question about that scene will be different. Special technology randomizes the order of the clips to ensure fresh fun each time the game is played.

The themed, interactive game board can be spread out for longer games, or folded when you don’t have a lot of time (or players). To help you move around the board there are four metal player tokens (Fawkes, Buckbeak, the Knight Bus, and the Durmstrang ship), one six-sided die to determine how many spaces to move, and one eight-sided die that determines the category to be played. Once the dice have been rolled, clips are watched, questions are asked, and it’s revealed just how true a fan you are. Categories span from Colin’s Camera (trying to determine an item before the picture is fully developed) to Hagrid’s Hut (naming one of the many magical creatures) and from Divination (identifying the character in the crystal ball) to many more.

Not an experienced wizard? Don’t worry. This game is easy enough to learn and fun enough to play even for those who are not overly familiar with the Harry Potter plots. Some questions can be answered simply by paying close attention to the movie clips, while others are about an actor’s work outside of these movies. There are also 30 House Points cards available to help (or occasionally hinder) your progress. If these reasons aren’t enough to tempt you into a game on your own, then hop on the Hogwarts Express with a friend or family member and play a few rounds in team mode first.

A TV, DVD player, and remote control are needed but not included. The DVD includes an on-screen demonstration of game play.

What’s in the box
1 DVD
1 Flextime game board
1 six-sided die
1 eight-sided category die
4 collectible metal player tokens
160 trivia cards
30 House Points cards
1 set of exclusive Harry Potter trading cards

Harry Potter Whomping Willow Game Review

Harry Potter Whomping Willow Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of Mattel's more interesting products for the Harry Potter series, but is worth the money you spend. The game has 3 different modes that are easy enough to understand. There is a little assembly required, which isn't too hard, plus it required 3 AA batteries to run.
When you get the game, you will get 3 large tree pieces, a lot of smaller branches you can attach to the tree, (could be a choking hazard), and 4 Ford Angelica's. The cars each have a small picture on the windshield of Harry and Ron. The game also includes 4 sets of luggage, books, and owls. You will also get a set of instructions (easy to read).
Once you put the 3 large pieces of the tree together (can be a little tricky at first), you have the option of adding on the smaller branches; that depends on how difficult you want the game to be. The extra branches snap into play very easily and any extras can be stored inside the box.
The game, as mentioned, above has 3 different modes. Before you pick a mode, you can set the tree to BASIC (the tree will rotate slowly), and ADVANCED (faster and more random). The basic object of the game is to use the cars to grab objects off the tree as it rotates and moves. The cars have exhaust coming out at the end that is used as handle. You grab objects using the long antenna.
The TIME mode is played by each player taking a turn to grab all the luggage; there is no time limit, but once you finish and stop the tree, it will sound car horns telling you how well you did (5 is excellent, 1 is poor). The VS mode allows 2 -4 players to play at the same time. The object is to obtain one piece of luggage, a set of books, and an owl before the other player. The FREE-FOR-ALL mode allows 2- 4 players to play. The goal is to get as much luggage before your opponents. Of course, in all these modes, if you knock an item off or drop it, you have to put it back on the moving tree with your hands.
The tree, of course, makes a lot of creaking and grinding sounds while turning (don't worry, it's suppose to), which just adds on to the fun. This game is a lot of fun, but not sure about the educational value. It can help develop your speed and coordination, but that's about all. The pieces seem to be quite durable, but if you drop the tree, it feels like it could damage a lot of the branches.
This game would be great for your next Harry Potter party or a great display in a room. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

This is a fun game for kids to play. It's fun to play by the rules, but it also has a lot of possibilities for kids to make up their own rules. I was introduced to this game when I was babysitting. Two girls (age 8 and 9) were playing it, and they had many different versions that they liked to play. It's always nice when games lend themselves easily to creative play.

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwart's Express (4841) Review

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwart's Express (4841)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are comparing the various Lego trains out there, you may have noticed that I am the same nut-job parent reviewing some of the other trains. So yes, I am partial to Lego trains. But I'll still try to give you a good review.
It is really hard for me to give a Lego train four stars instead of five, but please hear me out before you ding me. If you have a Harry Potter fan in the house, then this train is wonderful. It has a great set of characters and the train is sufficiently styled like the actual GWR 4900 Class 5972 Olton Hall that you can imagine it steaming towards Hogwarts with Harry, Ron and Draco aboard. Where it falls short is in the use of standard train wheels for the engine, something that Lego did not have to do because they began producing large steam-engine style drivers in 2009 (see sets #10194 and #7597). Yes, this train is easier to build, it does not require as much tinkering, and it should be easier to motorize. But Lego lost an opportunity to make a really fantastic engine. As it is, the wheel trucks simply look odd. I have other qualms with the design, but the wheel issue is why I find myself giving it four stars instead of five. My apologies to die-hard fans of the design.
As for the kids, they don't seem to care about the wheels.
Now for the nuts and bolts. This set includes a locomotive, tender and austere coach. It does not include track or a motor. This is the fourth Hogwart's Express from Lego (earlier sets being 4708, 4758, 10132); I think this new one does a better job of using sloped bricks. The set includes Harry, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Draco, two owls, a cat, a trunk, sweets trolly and a very nicely rendered enchanted Ford Anglia from "The Chamber of Secrets." The coach lacks doors but it has an easy-lift off top for positioning mini-figures. The top of the tender is hinged allowing it to be used as a secret compartment. The train is fairly easy to build, though five and six year olds may require some assistance.
Parents, be sure to buy track. As of early 2011, Lego discontinued their standard track pack, #7896. Two such sets gave you an oval. 7896 is still available but often at outrageous prices. In place of 7896, Lego currently offers a flex-track pack (#8867, which is enough to make a circle) and a combination straight and flex pack (#7499). I don't believe the flex track is ideal for curves, but it is not clear what Lego's plan is at the moment. There are also switches available (set #7895). In a pinch, you can use the train without track; Lego's directions allow you to lock the swiveling bogies in place. But track makes a big difference in the play experience.
You do not have to motorize it right off the bat (my kids enjoy push trains as well as motorized ones). But if you do, the set should be fairly straightforward to motorize with Power Function components, probably with a motor under the firebox, a battery in the tender, and an infrared receiver somewhere in between. Power Function (PF) components are available directly from Lego. You will want to purchase: 88002 (motor), 8884 (IR receiver), 8879 (IR transmitter), and one of the following:
-8878 (rechargeable battery) with 8887 (transformer for recharging)
-88000 (AAA battery box).
Lego trains prior to 2007 used an electrified 9 volt track. This system has been discontinued. If you are just starting out with Lego trains, you are best going with the current system (Power Functions) since 9 volt parts and track have become scarce.
If you are not sure about whether you want to invest in a Lego train and want more information, I recommend looking for Lego train videos on Youtube. It is often hard to find Lego trains in stores and even then, you don't get to see them running or handled.
Cheers

Since I bought the Harry Potter LEGO kit, one of the sets I got was The Chamber of the Winged Keys. in this scene, Harry and Ron need to catch a winged key to unlock the door. Only then will they be able to pass into the Chess room to play the ultimate battling game. This set includes Harry, Ron, the White King, a broomstick to catch the keys with, five flying keys, a chamber for the keys, and a chamber with nine Chess squares. This set becomes more intresting when you combine it with these sets: #4702 The Final Challenge and #4706 The Forbidden Corridor. I highly recommend this fantastic, high flying set.
