Isle of Lewis Chess Set - Unique Themed Chess Pieces Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This Isle of Lewis Chess Set (pieces and pawns) is an absolute treasure in my opinion. My decision to buy this product came down to the product description given by Amazon and the seller---how close to the originals these replicas are stated to be. I wanted something as close to the real thing as possible for a good price. I was not disappointed. These pieces and pawns exceeded my expectations. They are a nice size and weight; they stand nicely--no unevenness or wobbles. Each member of this set seems to have its own unique personality, which makes for an interesting study beyond chess playing. (I've uploaded some images for this product for you to view.) There is an antique, human-made feel about these objects that adds to their appeal. They are not TOO perfect---welcomed in today's world of machine-wrought multi-copies. One suggestion that I have is when they arrive, open the box and set them out for a while as the smell of their new finish can be quite potent, if you have a sensitive nose.. I suppose the finish aroma is probably from being packed and shipped.:) // My favorite piece is the Maple King. More than a game item, he's an fine bit of art with his detailed, bearded face and his regal throne. The Ivory King seems a bit chubbier and younger in his little persona. The chess set would make an exciting classroom addition. You could build whole lessons about observation, strategy, and critical thinking with them. This set would also make a great graduation and / or Christmas gift. The vinyl board allows you to play of course; however, once you see these chessmen, you'll want one of those nice boards to compliment them. Do a bit of searching on Amazon to see the boards available. // Yes, Harry Potter fans will find this set intriguing as well, but remember this set is purely Muggle...no magic other than that of your own imagination and perhaps, chess skills! LOL

Value Triple Weighted Plastic Chess Set in Black & Ivory - 4 inch King Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The set was what I expected. The piece designs are good. Solid pieces. My only negative is the "crown" of the queen is slightly sharp. If you want bigger pieces this is a solid choice.
If you do get this you will need a board with 2 1/4 sqares.

Chess Explorer Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I played casual dorm chess in college. (I'm retired, so that was a long time ago.) I remember when they had giant mainframe computers that couldn't beat grandmasters. Now you have a game that go from giving a newcomer some confidence to providing a challenge to the more advanced player. It is a remarkable amount of technology in a small package. There are 64 levels of play, a teaching mode, a coach option where you get the computer's recommended move and much more. The pieces are small, but are magnetized. You don't have to remember the names of the squares and enter them in and then move. You press down on the piece you are going to move, move it to the new location and press down again. The computer will then calculate it's move. It will tell you to move (for example) from E7 to E5. Again you press the black piece when you start and finish. To make finding the right square even easier, a light along the front row labeled A-H, and along the sides labeled 1-8 light up. Getting the right piece in the crosshairs is easy. There are a lot of cool features. You can take a move back, have the computer change sides, and much more. I think it s lot of technology and a great game for the price. Using some of the learning modes along with a few books from the library your skills will improve.
I've only touched on a few of the features. The board is a modern design. the sides slide open to hold all the pieces. While you cn plug it in, running it on 4AA batteries makes it very portable. Highly reocmenneded for beginners, more skilled players or if you can't find someone to play with.
I haven't had it very long, so I cant speak to its durability over time. I'd certaintly tatke be batteries out if you aren't going to be playinf for awhile

ChessCentral's Superior Chess Set with Triple Weighted Chess Pieces, Black Vinyl Board, Black Tote Bag and Timekeeper Chess & Game Clock Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Several chess pieces were chipped. Chess clock buttons overly noisy, make a loud snapping noise. A plus is an "off" switch so you don't have to worry about the buttons being in "neutral". Board was better than expected, soft vinyl. Carry bag is inferior to the Excalibur.

ChessCentral's Chess Pieces, Green Board and Green Tote Bag Starter Kit Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I love it! The best tournament chess set at a low price. I have purchased several sets from other chess shops, but none have had the durability this set has (and all were much more expensive). The pieces are weighted, the chess board is indestructible and the bag holds it all plus a chess clock and score pad easily. Terrific!
