(More customer reviews)Anyone familiar with the creators of Myst know that they're all for breaking the rules, and this board game is no exception. There are two pieces to represent the players, there are puzzle pieces, there are cards to deal out and a spinner to spin, and the rules are suggested but not set in stone. Essentially, there's a starter set of rules, how to use the puzzle pieces and cards and whatnot right out of the box, and the creators invite you to make up your own rules and create your own game, much as they have done with the game Uru.
To those who like having a set of concrete rules with a concrete goal, this isn't the game for you. There's no "I win!" space to land on and gloat at your opponents. Looking at the game pieces, the game's rules don't immediately spring to mind; you'd actually have to read the included booklet to discover them. There's a concrete goal in the rules that come with the game, which is fine by me. I'm also a fan of the fact that I can switch up the rules a bit if I want, make the cards and point values have a different meaning, and I think it's nice to have a game promote creativity and tinkering.
The game isn't incredibly durable; the puzzle pieces are made of cardboard, as is the spinner, so young children would probably tear it to pieces, or swallow the little player markers. However, if it is played by those who are ages 10 and above (as suggested right on the box), there should be no problem. The game is made for two players, or two groups of players.
I'm not quite sure what the other reviewer was talking about, but I had plenty of fun with this game, and I will have plenty more. My friends like to call me up with new ideas on occasion, saying, "Why don't we play it like this next time?" and I'm always happy to oblige. I find it fun and not the least bit boring.
