Jot Game Review

My wife, sister-in-law and I enjoyed playing this game. We found it uniquely challenging and a refreshing change of pace from Scrabble. At first appearance, it appears that it would be quite simple to play this, given you are allowed to create your own words, however, after a few turns, the board starts filling up and it becomes more and more challenging to accomplish your assigned task. A great learning tool for kids and fun for adults. I'd give it five stars, but the markers and eraser are of extremely poor quality. A trip to Office Max for some quality dry markers is a must, as well as a paper towel for erasing.

This is totally unlike any other word game you've ever played. Roll the electronic roll-a-timer to find out what to do -- add 2 letters, erase another player's word and replace with your own, or pick a card. The electronic roll-a-timer tells you what to do and beeps when the time is up. Players write words directly onto the write-on wipe-off board using erasable colored pens. Players score points for the length of their words and for crossing special scoring squares. Players lose points when another player erases their word and substitutes one of theirs. Jot! is a fast-paced, write-on wipe-off, and competitive word game. Includes gameboard, electronic timer, four erasable markers, instructions, game cards, score card and eraser. Requires 2 LR44 batteries, included.

Synonyms- The Word Game That Gets Your Mind Racing Review

Synonyms- The Word Game That Gets Your Mind Racing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love to be able to use educational games in our homeschooling - especially when those games don't require us to be super serious. Enter in Synonyms - the board game. The first thing that struck me about this game was how beautiful it was. Everything was nicely contained in its own compartment in the box (love that!). The 400+ color-coded cards were laminated and sturdy so they are sure to last for many, many games (and years) to come.
...my mommy brain truly needs to be exercised more!
From the first roll of the die, this game had my daughter (age 11) and I in stitches. Why? Well, it soon became evident that we really need to work on our vocabulary. Due to this fact, we chose to do the "easier" version of the game. In time, we'll work up to the normal game as our vocabulary expands. We helped each other with hints which lead to even more laughter. We also chose not to time ourselves because, well, we were that bad. Obviously, my mommy brain truly needs to be exercised more!
Let me back up a minute and explain what this game is all about....
Each player (or team) goes around the board and collects the letters of the word Synonym. Sounds fairly simple, right? Well, not so fast. The player has to correctly give the designated number of synonyms (based on a roll of the die) for the word they are given. There are 3 difficulty levels for the words, but the player doesn't get to pick the level. Nope, that is determined by the color of the space on which they landed.
...a mind-enhancing, lively vocabulary game.
The synonym (word) cards have the vocab word on the front of the card, and a listing of synonyms on the back of the card. Not all synonyms will be listed, so the group gets to make the final decision on whether the given word is genuinely a synonym for the current word. It can become rather crazy. Add in challenge cards and some pass cards, and you have the makings for a mind-enhancing, lively vocabulary game.
Synonyms lends itself to a wide range of variations as well as different vocabulary capabilities. It's recommended for ages 10+. With help and a bit of tweaking, younger students could play. This game would not only be great for students, homeschoolers, and/or teachers, but also for an excellent party game. It can be used for 2-8 players, but by playing in teams, it can be expanded to include more players.
We've had so much fun playing this game, and I recommend it without reservation.
Disclosure: I received a copy of Synonyms to help facilitate a frank and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Synonyms is the exciting word challenge that entertains and educates in a fast-paced and fun board game. Can you name 2 synonyms for the word great? Players race their pawns around the board to be the first to collect all the letters of the word SYNONYMS. Roll the die and select a card. You have one minute to earn your letter by naming the designated number of synonyms- unless another player declares a challenge! Minds race at maximum brainpower as each tries to top the other by naming more synonyms. Play as a team or individually and put your verbal skills to the test! Bakers Dozen Review

Bakers Dozen

My 8 year old received this for Christmas. We really enjoy playing it. Children are encouraged to practice their adding and strategy skills as they try to avoid collecting doughnuts by going over 13. However, it has a hearts like aspect to it in that you if you collect the most cards of one color, they don't count against you in the end. This game would be good for children ages maybe 6 and up.

Sort the different kinds of donuts to form a Baker's Dozen, but don't let the total value go over 13! If you do. You'll have to take all the donut cards in that pile, wich may include moldy donuts, too! Multiplication Bingo Review

Multiplication Bingo
Average Reviews:

My third grade son loves playing board games. When he began learning multiplication in school he was having difficulty and this was an inexpensive way to have fun while practicing the subtraction facts. It has been a huge help and he has fun while he is learning - rather than sitting at the table with pencil and paper all of the time.
One thing I particularly like abouot this game is that if your child is having trouble with certain groups of facts (such as multiplying by 7's), you can be sure to call those cards each time to increase the repetition in which they must calculate those problems. One thing I don't like is that for some kids, or kids just beginning learning their multiplication, it is hard to calculate the problems in their head without writing it down and working it through on paper - this can be easily solved though by giving them a scratch pad and pencil while they play.

Game is exceptional. Only problem probably will be that the small domino pieces will get lost. Hope someone offers replacement dominoes for the game. I have played the game by myself and even being careful I found domino pieces that I missed putting up. So I count the pieces now but that is time consuming and really should be unnecessary. Still glad I got the game.

Pig Pile Review

Pig Pile
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pig Pile by Richard Borg is a light, 30 minute card game for ages 8 and up. Humorously, the theme is supported by the cartoon art on the cards and the 40 rubbery, flexible pigs which server no purpose other than to keep score and to make complex arrangements while waiting for the dealer to shuffle. The cards are sturdy, but not exceptionally nice: they lack embossing and might be a bit tough to shuffle and easy-to-fray at the edges. The rules are well written, easy-to-understand, and well illustrated.
Much like Uno, the cards are numbered 0 through 12, and the object is to get rid of your hand. With the exception of the "Hog Wild" card (the 0) you must play a card higher than the previous card, or else you must take the entire play pile into your hand. The "Lose a Turn" (4), "Hog Wash" (8), and "Ewe Turn" (11) cards liven up play by skipping a player, resetting the play pile to 0 cards, or reversing direction.
However, serious game players are likely to love or hate the game based upon the "slop pile" feature of the game. At the start of a hand, all players begin with a random set of 3 cards which form the "slop pile". Players cannot play from the "slop pile" until they have played all their known cards. So serious game play is hampered by 3 randomly selected cards at the end. This drives some players nuts, but other players might enjoy this bit of random fun at the end of the hand.
In summary, Pig Pile is a fun, light game that will certainly entertain the young and the young-at-heart, but it might be a bit too random for serious players.

Cathedral Classic Review

Cathedral Classic
Average Reviews:

"Cathedral" is a simple game to learn and one that will be quickly picked up by anyone who tries it.
The idea is to take over as much territory within a medieval town's walls as possible. You do this by placing your various buildings in strategic places within the playing area.
The game itself is made from wood, and the pieces are quite a good size. As such, they are durable and will last ages before any wear and tear begins to show.
I personally found myself quickly becoming bored with the game, as it does not seem to have the endless variety that a game such as chess can provide. The relative movements and strategies you can develop are fairly limited, in that sense.
However, "Cathedral" is different and it is simple. If there are only two players, it makes a quick, fast game to fill a few minutes with. However, should your inclincations be toward longer, more in-depth games, this is not the best of them.

Imagine yourself living during Medieval Times, the period of history referred to as the Middle Ages. In the game of Cathedral, you are a rich and powerful landowner. The playing board represents the site of the walled city. Two sets of playing pieces symbolize both the buildings and the two opposing forces who battle to gain control by strategically positioning their building pieces back on the board. In this game of competition and rivalry, victory goes to the player who is best at blocking and out-maneuvering their opponent. This wooden game includes 1 board, 28 buildings, 1 cathedral, and rules. Two players. Ages 8 and up.

Phase 10 Dice Game Review

Phase 10 Dice Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this for a Christmas present many years ago. My much older bro taught me the card version, and bought me the dice version many years ago. I LOOOVE this!
If you are the kind of person who enjoys doing games that involves sequences, even a tad poker-like, then THIS is the game for you! Instead of getting a flush for suites, you go for all colors in a sequence. A couple of sequences involves having so many numbers in order just like using 5 cards for a straight in poker. There are 3 of a kinds and four of a kinds. But there are times when you would need to make 3 of a kind PLUS a straight in the same turn. But think of it as wild poker, where duces are wild or you play with jokers or you decide on the wild cards because in Phase 10, be it dice OR cards, there are Wilds you can use to bail you out. The awesome alternative is, unlike the card game, you can do this on your own if you wanted to play by yourself bad enough because you have no one to do the game with. But UNLIKE poker, you have a set sequence you do, and you're STUCK until you complete the sequence.
If you are looking for a game for your kids, I would say this game can be played by upper elementary school age without adult or teen supervision. It would be complex for younger or maybe even middle elementary school age kids to do this without help.
And this is cheap enough, baby! :)
Get the game for some rockin' and a rollin' fun! :)

We bought this game because the next "level" of cranium game would be cadoo which is ages 7 &up. My daughter is 4.5 and it was fun the first 2 times we played it and then it got boring. Another reviewer had the right idea when they said to make variations up. It helps the game last much longer than if there were none. My daughter really likes the bouncy balls and the key though. Bottom line is that if your kids know their abc's and 123's then I would suggest you find another game. It's a great beginning game though!

My 2.5 year old has a wonderful time playing this in beginner mode. I also got excited watching her demonstrate how well she knew her numbers, letters, shapes and colours. The concept of the game has just the right amount of complexity to keep her (and me) interested, but is simple enough that she knows exactly how it works and it doesn't require ongoing guidance or coaching every time. I like that it has a harder level - though I expect it will have to get put away for a while to make it interesting again once her interest wanes at the easy level.

I have played at grade 6 and found myself forgetting some of the answers. This game is just fantastic for aged 3-100 I would say. The game is even larger than I thought it would be. Included are a large spinner with all of the categories including Science, Math, Arts, Reading & The World. There is even a space of choose your category which is the most fun.
