Fat Brain Toys Dado Planks Review

These colorful, inter-locking blocks induce creativity. We purchased them for our 4 year old daughter, but our 6 year-old son seems to be much more into them then she is right now - possibly the age. We have used them with our "CitiBlocks" to make some really cool/interesting structures, too.

Note the dimensions. The board and checker pieces look standard-sized in the photo, but they are about one-third smaller than I was expecting. I guess it really is more of a toy than a game. The quality of the board and pieces is high, however.

Little Garden - Pegging Game Review

Little Garden - Pegging Game
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Haba Junior Peg Board at the same time for [...]. I was surprised when they both arrived and were pretty much the same size. The Junior Peg Board was listed for ages 1 1/2 at the time I purchased it, but I still don't let my just turned two year old child play with it unsupervised. It has since been changed to 2 1/2.
As far as the little flower garden, here's my opinion:
Pros:Cute
Cons: Way too expensive for what you get. They should have made it a bit larger. Half the pieces to this toy are choking hazards. I bagged that half up and figure my child can use them when three or older. The holes are small enough on the pieces that they can get stuck easily on little fingers. I keep this toy out of reach and only bring it down for supervised play.
Basically, if your two year old explores by putting things in their mouth occasionally or puts their fingers in holes, this is not the toy for you. It's a toy that I look at and want to kick myself for spending the money on.

Briarpatch, I Spy 4 in 1 Little Wheels Puzzle, 8.00 x 2.00 x 11.00 Review

Average Reviews:

I purchased this puzzle because we have a couple of other Briarpatch puzzles and love them (Simms Tabak 4 in 1 Safari and Things that Move). Their other puzzles were very sturdy and the images were of a good quality. However, this puzzle set (along with the I Spy Little Animals set) is of a very poor quality. The pieces were all mixed together in the box (there are four puzzles - easy enough to separate, but the other Briarpatch puzzles came in separate bags) and were sort of warped. The picture quality is low and seemed poorly thought out. I heartily recommend the other Briarpatch Puzzle sets (Simms Taback Safari and Things that Move) but do not waste time/money/energy on these sets. Incidently, if you're looking for good puzzles, I purchased the eeBoo "Life on Earth" set - it is excellent quality all around - very heartily recommended.

TIC TAC CHEC Review

TIC TAC CHEC
Average Reviews:

This is a good games and a really great concept. Game play is simple and fast paced. There is strategy involved, but it never bogs down the action. Using a scaled down board and just a handful of key chess pieces, this games succeeds where so many others have failed: It creates a great learning tool and introduction to chess while also leveling the field for experts and novices.
How is this possible? Simple. While the expert is trying to teach the beginner the rules and strategies of chess, the beginner is winning at a game she or he already knows -- tic tac toe. My nine-year-old son, for example, asked maybe 6 times "How does this piece move?" I'd tell him and maybe correct a few wrong moves, and then the little stinker would suddenly beat me. I'm playing chess, he's playing tic tac toe, all while we're both playing Tic Tac Chec and having a blast!
My only complaints about the game is the lightweight pieces skitter off the board too easily (heavier and maybe slight larger chess pieces would help)and the directions are a little vague ("pawns must cross the board before they can reverse direction", "you can't move if there are less than three of your pieces on the board", and "start with a blank board, taking turns placing pieces until you can start moving them" are helpful clarifications).

Quoridor For Kids Review

Quoridor For Kids

I love the idea of this game...the strategy, the cute mice playing pieces, and the maze concept are all intriguing. I love that this game is made of solid wood as well. The game is easy to learn and fun, except that the fun is too short-lived. The game is over in just a few minutes. After playing several quick games in a row, it becomes repetitive. I did find that the game lasts just a little longer and is slightly more challenging with 3 or more players, but barely. There is an adult version with the same exact concept and method of play, which I imagine has more walls and spaces to roam; but I have not tried this version to see if play is lengthened enough to make it more enjoyable. I am aware that this one is for children, but I would recommend it for children under 10. Even better ages 5-8 would best suit this game only because of the strategy being more difficult for this age group...at first. My 11 year old after the first time playing stated that "this game is really quick". She also liked the idea, but wasn't impressed either. I love everything about this game except the length of play.

Eclipse Review

My husband is somewhat difficult to shop for, but loves brain teasers and strategy games. This Christmas, I bought Eclipse for a couple of reasons:
1. It looked fun and challenging; like something my husband would enjoy.
2. It's aesthetically pleasing, the pieces and board are beautiful; something that I wouldn't mind being left on the coffee table.
It has lived up to my expectations. On Christmas morning, he wanted to play it as soon as he opened it. We have both enjoyed it very much, and have also shared it with friends who like it. Eclipse is engaging and challenging. Lots of fun, even for non-math brains like me. :-)

CRIBBAGE BOARD - THREE TRACK Review

CRIBBAGE BOARD - THREE TRACK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is exactly as pictured and exactly what we wanted. There are no surprises here. It is what it is. It is rather large and not as easy to pack away or take along somewhere as a smaller board would be, but given its configuration you wouldn't want it much smaller. It would be too cramped.
I was taught cribbage as a kid using a traditional "up-and-back-and-up-and back-again" board and I'm fine with that. My daughter, however, loses track of whether we're on the first "up-and-back" or the second one. She prefers this format where she can see the game as one contiuous progression from beginning to end. This board is just what she wanted and we've played many an enjoyable game using it.

Library Scrabble Game Set Review

Library Scrabble Game Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a minor board game fan, I never really felt compelled to actually purchase board games until Hasbro finally got the wonderful idea to put together a handful of their favorite games in "nostalgia" packaging in a wonderful wooden box! Finally there are board minds I don't mind owning, playing, and most importantly displaying.
Most of the games in the "Library" set have minor problems like board size or piece size, but all in all these games are a perfect addition to any classy front room. Scrabble, however, is without any real changes or problems at all. The board is full size, the tiles have no problems staying on the board when it's on a flat surface, and the board creases don't really mess anything up. The ONLY problem I have with this set is that the wooden box that the game comes in does not have the little magnet that keeps the lid from sliding out when taking out the game! It's hardly even a gripe at all, but when all the other ones have it and this one doesn't it makes you wonder what the hell happened over at Hasbro. Also, you might want to buy these games in person; for some reason the gold lettering on the spine of the "books" tends to be in varying conditions (some are faded, some are greenish). Go for the gold!
Regardless, Scrabble (much like the games in the whole set) is a wonderful game and this set is absolutely worth buying. Keep the cheapo paper box version for the kids, and put this up in the bookshelf for visitors over 10. You won't be disappointed.

Gobblet Classic Edition - Deluxe Limited Edition Review

Gobblet Classic Edition - Deluxe Limited Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd never played Gobblet before, but the "Deluxe Limited Edition" looked nice and "classy" in pictures and the game itself sounded interesting. I figured I could leave it out on a coffee table, since it's easy for two people to pick up and play -- much more accessible than Chess. Now that I own it, I wouldn't suggest buying this game thinking you are getting a super-high quality, well-built, classy toy. I was very disappointed in the build quality.
First of all, it has an extremely strong lacquer smell right out of the box and also comes coated in a dusty residue. There were several dings and imperfections in the wood itself, and the actual finish is not great. It looks like it was either not sanded well or the lacquer was spray-painted on; it is just not that smooth and even.
Since it's wood, you'd think it'd be more durable than your typical plastic game, but I have my doubts. The pieces themselves are very thin wood and would probably be susceptible to cracking or breaking completely if dropped on a hard surface. The storage box and lid are thin as well.
At first glance this is still one of the best looking games in my collection, but up close it's nothing to write home about. It definitely hasn't earned it's spot out on the coffee table based on looks, but it will definitely be one of the first games I grab when I'm headed to a friend's house.

Bought this game for my 4 year-old. She loves it! Her friends too.
It's easy enough for young children to learn in moments. Just stack the cute wooden hens, wagon wheels, and hay bales on the wobbly perch, and take turns removing piece by piece while still keeping the roost in balance.
My daughter loves the suspense, and I love that she is practicing important fine motor and balancing skills while having a ton of fun!
The game is cute and very well crafted, all in wood.

Imagine yourself living during Medieval Times, the period of history referred to as the Middle Ages. The Roman Empire had recently collapsed and the Renaissance era had not yet begun.Medieval towns cropped up throughout Western Europe. The Cathedral, a place of sanctuary and worship, was the focal point of the city and located in the center of town.Shops and various trading stores surrounded the Cathedral, while residents and shop keepers lived within the stone walls which formed the town boundary. What went on within these walls was dictated by rich and powerful landowners. In the game of Cathedral, you are such a landowner. The playing board represents the site of the walled city. Two sets of playing pieces symbolize both the buildings and the two opposing forces who battle to gain control by strategically positioning their building pieces back on the board. In this award-winning game of competition and rivalry, victory goes to the player who is best at blocking and out-maneuvering their opponent.

Quixo Classic Review

Quixo Classic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quixo Classic is well-made, well-conceived strategic game for 2 or 4 players, which, because it is related to tic-tac-toe, is easy enough for a 6-year-old to play, and, because of its use of the mechanics of sliding block puzzles, is subtle enough to challenge a 66-year-old. Well, 67, actually, but who's counting?
The game consists of 25, 1-inch wooden cubes, bevel edged, lovingly smoothed, warmly wooden cubes, which are packed in a cloth bag, and nestle comfortably in a wooden tray. Four sides of the cubes are left blank. You'll find an X pyrographed on one of the other sides, and, opposite that, similarly pyrographed, an O.
At the beginning of the game, all the cubes are placed on the board, on to any of their 4 blank sides, forming a 5x5 array. Only the cubes on the periphery are available for play.
The object of the game is to be the first player or team to get 5 of your symbols (an X or an 0) in a straight line. To do this, you pick any blank block on the edge of the board, remove it, and then slide the row or column of blocks so as to create a new blank space on one of the edges of the board. You then place the block you selected into that space, positioning it so that your symbol is showing.
The game continues in that manner, players or teams alternating turns, until someone gets 5 of their symbols in the proverbial row. Because each move results in moving part or all of a row or column, blocks are getting continually repositioned - and within there lies the rub, as well as the tickle. You have to see much further ahead, consider a copious complexity of cubic combinations in order to get your symbols (and not your opponent's) to line up in the appropriate array of your aspirations.
Designed by Thierry Chapeau, Quixo Classic is one in a series of similarly well-made games by the French game publisher Gigamic, available in the US from our much-appreciated Fundex. Easy to learn, as fun for kids as adults, well-made, played in 15 minutes or less, often surprising - as they all-too-rarely say amongst Major Fun Game Tasters, this one's a Keeper!

Blue Orange Pengoloo Review

Blue Orange Pengoloo
Average Reviews:

This is a very well-done memory game. There are twelve adorable wooden penguins with a hollow space to hide one of twelve brightly colored eggs (2 each of 6 colors). Players roll the dice to determine what color eggs they are looking for and then look under two penguins. If they get a match, they get to keep it; if both match, they get another turn; otherwise, it's the next player's turn. The first to get 6 eggs wins, or the one at the end with the most.
This game is very durable with all wooden pieces. This is a big plus to me with five children now, and hopefully more in the future. The penguin framework makes this game very enjoyable to my three older children (ages 7 1/2, 5 1/2, and 4). And of course, there's the educational value of a memory-building game.
I am very glad to have purchased this game and plan to buy it as a gift for my nieces and nephews. I'd highly recommed it for families with preschoolers and early elementary aged children.
