The American Girls Game: Trivia, Trade, & A Trip Through Time (American Girls Collection Sidelines) Review

The American Girls Game: Trivia, Trade, and A Trip Through Time (American Girls Collection Sidelines)
Average Reviews:

I enjoy this game very much, but the reason I marked it 4 stars is because it's quite long, and near the end, it can get a little bit boring. I marked the Education 2 because even though the AG characters come from history, the game doesn't.To win, you must go home with 25 points (which you earn by answering the trivia cards right, Q# 1 gives you one point and etc. up to 3.) and at least three matches, which you can make with the trade cards you draw at every turn. You roll 2 dice to go through the game.

This game really makes you think, but it is a blast at the same time. You get to see how creative people can be when giving clues with the limited words they find, and it is so rewarding when your teammates get your direction. I am a big fan of Taboo, so I was thrilled to find a game that was a step up, challenge-wise.

Chess Set 13 1/2inch Glass/metal Base in Gold/silver, American Puzzles,

I have a few comments about this chessboard. First, I bought it for only ten bucks a few months ago at a retail toy store. I'm not sure why it is priced this high here. Second, the board itself looks like it is etched glass but it isn't. I was playing last night with a friend who was eating Cheetos. Somehow little Cheetos pieces landed on the board last night...I hope it was when I got him with the surprise checkmate! Anyway, I went to clean it off this morning and wherever Cheetos had landed they had lifted off the white opaque covering that passes for the filled-in squares. That's why I am here looking for chessboards right now - I am going to have to toss this one. For ten bucks I'd consider it a disposable board and try to keep it away from any food or water. For more than ten bucks I'd keep shopping for a nicer set, which is exactly what I am doing.

Folding Magnetic Travel Chess Set - 10" Review

Folding Magnetic Travel Chess Set - 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked at a lot of different models, but this one seemed just about right. Not too small to enjoy playing with at home, and not too big to play with in the car on a trip. All pieces hold well even as you hold the board perpendicular to the table, so at least when new, the magnets do OK. The magnet in one of the pawns was not "seated in" completely, and I could not jam it in, so it stood a little off balance when set on the board. But I called the Chess Store company and they sent a replacement immediately and I received it w/in a week of calling them. The quality of the board and appearance of the pieces is reasonable. I think a price of $30 might have been more appropriate, but this will serve us well. I did not know if the pieces would fall out as you try to close it. At first they didn't, but as the pieces form a "memory" on the green padding, then they can loosen up, and I have already had one piece fall out as I tried to close the board. There are other models where all pieces fit into one side only. But I think this will work out OK if you watch as you close it.

I was very disappointed in this toy. It has 2 sides, one magnetic, and the other like a dry board. There is a pen that you fill with water and use it to draw on the dry side with. Well, my daughter used too much water and the board began to warp & peel. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this.

CRANIUM Puppy Pals Bingo Review

CRANIUM Puppy Pals Bingo

We got this for my soon to be three year old. To say that he loves it is an understatement. It is intended for two players but we have played with more. Even my almost four year old can play it with her almost three year old brother by themselves.
The games pieces are very sturdy.
The dogs kennels each have a pattern, a shape, and a color and this is what you are trying to match. There are cards that you turn over and then you try to find the match on your card (3 x 3 squares). if you have the match you put one of the little dog tokens on your card and they are made to fit in to the hole so that they don't slide off or can be accidentally knocked off. If you get three in a row (this is the only part I have to teach him) you get your puppy and put him in the kennel at the top and shout "Woof woof". This has been a great first game. When you turn the card over and say have you got...a heart? He shouts it "I do, I do". I have already decided to purchase this as a birthday present for two cousins and a friend.

Picture of product shows 4 sets A,B,C and D.
You only get item A - which was all I needed so it wasn't a problem for me
but if you are looking for the metal pegs or marbles this is not the set for you.
Rating this a 4 because I like the wooden pegs far better than the plastic
ones that come with most cribbage boards. Delivery was very fast - just 2 days. True shipping was more than the cost of the pegs but they were exactly what I was looking for so it was worth it to me.

Seafarers of Catan Review

Seafarers of Catan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're reading this, you no doubt are already a fan of Settlers of Catan. You're deliberating, trying to decide if you want to shell out more $ for this expansion. "Is it worth it?", you ask.
As one Settlers fan to another, allow me to encourage you. Yes, it is definitely worth it!
Seafarers adds additional water and land tiles, as well as an additional land type: Gold Field. Gold field works like every other resource, except that when the number comes up you get to pick *any* resource card.
The game also includes little ships, of four colors. These ships function just like roads, and can be joined to roads through a settlement. You use them to explore from the mainland of Catan in search of additional lands (and additional resources).
The rulebook contains several scenarios, accomadating 3 or 4 players. Some scenarios start with all lands revealed, other scenarios include an exploration element. In these scenarios, only the mainland is revealed: the surrounding seas and the other land tiles are placed face down. These are turned over when a ship reaches them, revealing either a sea, in which case exploration must continue, or a land, in which case the discovering player gets one card of that land's resource.
You can see that one of the best things about Settlers, the random board setup, is made even better by hiding the concealing the nature of the unexplored tiles.
My only complaint is that the rulebook, which contains diagrams of specific tile layouts for each scenario, is printed in such a way that it is hard to read. The text is understood easilly enough, but the board layouts are dark and indistinct.
But this complaint is minor, and with practice is easilly remedied. Seafarers is a terrific expansion that makes the already great game of Settlers even better.

Austin Powers Backgammon Review

This is not one of the heavy duty oversized wood boards. It is a very nice smooth blue colored felt backgammon board. Backgammon is a great game and has been played for many centuries. It is played by older kids and adults around the world. There is a good bit of luck involved but far more skill than most people realise. I have heard it said that backgammon is more complex than chess because of the number of potential moves. All I know it that my friend and I play regularly. I have this board and it's a great board for the money. It's a good size board, not too big to travel with or store at home. Good luck!

This game is great! It's sort of a reverse of clue - you're trying to kill Doctor Lucky, using various weapons such as bad cream and crepe pans. It's a challenge because there can be no witnesses (if another player is in the same room, an adajent room or hallway) and the other players can also try to stop you from killing him with various cards and spite tokens. If you like games like Clue, you'll love this game.

Parker Brothers: CLUE 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition in Metal Tin

"Clue" has always been my favorite board game. But I only had an old, beat-up version, until my most recent birthday, when I got this! "Clue" anniversary edition is really very nice. There is a new weapon, the poison, and the character tokens are metal and look like statues of the people. It's neat to see what Mrs. Peacock and prof. Plum look like! This version thought of everything, from a hard surface to write to to something to write with. It even comes with an expanded story about Mr. Body's murder. Probably the only problem is not enough detective papers for all the times you will play this! (Don't worry, it gives you a place to send away for more.) Be warned-- this is a fancy version, probably something you don't want 5-year-olds playing with.

Cities and Knights of Catan: 5-6 Player Expansion
Average Reviews:

We bought this thinking that it would extend the game the same as Seafarers but it changed the game play so much that it was not enjoyable to play.
The added elements are knights to guard your cities which take resources to keep active. A new kind of barbarian is present which knocks out your defense based on what somebody else did with there defenses. yes, you are punished for someone else's lack of defenses.
There is also added refined resources like cloth which are spent on improvements to your cities, knight upgrades or on a new kind of action cards. These action cards are similar to development cards but they go beyond. They include things like spies, trade agreements, embassies.
You spend time working on so many different these things that game play is slower and easily more frustrating.

Big Boggle; Bigger Hidden WORD Game Review

Big Boggle; Bigger Hidden WORD Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product can be hard to find. The game is simple to play, although it is best for ages 5 and up (the item description says 8 and up), because the players need to form words from the available letters.
Big Boggle is a wonderful way to spend time with family and to teach children new words, as well as to develop their mental and verbal acuity. The rules, including timing, scoring, word length, etc., can be modified to fit the level of the players.
The major upside of this game is that all players form words simultaneously, as opposed to taking turns like a Scrabble game. Not much patience is required, but the players must expend mental effort. A game of Big Boggle can be completed very quickly. The time limit for a single round is usually three minutes, plus the time it takes to compare words formed. I could play for three minutes or three hours. If you do not enjoy thinking games or word games, then consider a different product. This is a straightforward classic word game. Beautiful and simple.
The parts are well-made and functional, although the sand timer is a bit flimsy, as typically occurs with these games. Proper play demands some sort of dictionary or word list so that challenges can be assessed appropriately. Players will also need paper and writing implements.
I would call this game a must-have for family game time. It fully supplants and surpasses the original Boggle. Big Boggle is one of my top ten favorite games, and the ease of play adds to the enjoyment.
My assessment:
Ages: 5 and up (depending on reading level of children).
Players: 2 or more. The best games involve 4-6 players, in my opinion, but there is no reason that more cannot play. 2- or 3-player games can be relaxing and enjoyable as well.
Duration: 5 minutes or longer, can be modified to fit time constraints.
Game type: Classic word game. Very little strategy is involved. Not highly competitive or combative. Requires knowledge of words between 4 and 8 letters. Words longer than 8 letters are not frequently formed.

Big Boggle is a timed word game introduced in 1979. Players attempt to find as many connected words as possible from the face up letters resting in a 25 cube grid. When the 3 minute timer runs out, players compare their list or words and remove any shared words. Points are then awarded for remaining words, depending on how many letters are in the word.Contents: 25 letter cubes, cube grid with dome, 3-minute timer, instructions. Pente has very basic rules, but the design and goal of the game can yield intellectually challenging matches that test your skill and strategy levels. Pente is on of those games that takes minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. Just when you think you have it all down, a new opponent can teach you a whole new dimension to the game.
This board game is my all time favorite. Similar to Go and Othello, but 1000x better, Pente will keep you engaged for hours, or days, or how ever long you play it for. If you are tired of boring and mindless games where you spin a wheel or throw dice, Pente is for you!!!

Seafarers of Catan: 5-6 Player Expansion Review

Seafarers of Catan: 5-6 Player Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 5-6 player expansion allows you to play a 5 or 6 player game for Seafarers Of Catan. However, it's not a standalone product by a long shot as you'll also need Settlers Of Catan (for the majority of its pieces and components), Seafarers Of Catan (for its red, white, blue, and orange ship pieces as well as other Seafarers components like extra/special tiles, harbor tokens, and frame pieces), and Settlers Of Catan 5-6 player expansion (for its green and brown pieces, extra development cards, extra resource cards, and tiles/tokens) in order to use this game + player expansion. By comparison, the Seafarers player expansion provides relatively little compared to the rest just mentioned. You get 15 brown and green ship pieces, 10 more victory token markers (despite the 6 that the box says, I guess it was a typo as the Catan series has never been known to provide extra or spare pieces, but between the 2 boxes, this does give each of the 6 players 3 Victory Point markers), 8 extra sea tiles, and 1 gold field tile. The manual is smaller since the expansion box is smaller than the 3/4 player packaging of Seafarers, but thankfully, this is also a recent, full color edition, so setting up the scenarios aren't as difficult and time consuming as they could've been. It should be noted that some of the components that would only be used in this player expansion, like the 5-tile `X' frame extensions (2 `XX' and 1 `X' frame piece for each side) and 2 of the 3:1 harbor tokens (up to 10 of the 12 harbors are used in the game expansion) came with the 3/4 player version of Seafarers. I'm guessing it was just cheaper and easier to manufacture it like that, even though the smaller, player expansion box could've fit all of those extras. If you were able to find the player expansion rulebook online somewhere or still retained the physical copy, you could easily get away with combining 2 (3/4 player) Seafarer game expansion boxes to play the 5-6 player scenarios.
Scenarios remain mostly the same as many of them that had separate 3 and 4 player versions, namely The Four Islands, Oceans, Into The Desert, and A New World have now been updated for separate 5 and 6 player variations. The names of the 5 and 6 player versions of The Four Islands have been changed to The Five Islands and The Six Islands respectively (and yes those boards do contain 5 and 6 islands). The 4 player versions of The Great Crossing and Greater Catan have been updated to their respective 6 player versions in the player expansion. Oddly enough, there's no 5-6 player version of New Shores. It would've been possible to fit the larger, oblong shaped island from Settlers Of Catan 5-6 player expansion into the largest frame Seafarers 5-6 player expansion offers, but I suppose they had their reasons against that, possibly because it would skew gameplay or that Greater Catan VI is already somewhat similar to that. So you now have 10, not 11 scenarios to work with in this expansion, but like with Seafarers, the new scenarios that remain will keep the game interesting and players coming back for more. For more insight on Seafarers Of Catan, be sure to check out my Seafarers Of Catan review here on Amazon as well.
Otherwise, the game plays similar to Seafarers Of Catan + Settlers Of Catan player expansion fused together. You have the special build phase where there's no player trading, bank/port exchange, and use of development cards, or one could elect some unofficial variants like discarding half your cards if you have more than 9 cards when a 7 is rolled. Either way, it's now with a delightful Seafarers twist. With overall even larger maps taking even more time to set up, more players to distribute resources to after each roll, and more turns for each round of turns, games definitely take longer than before. Having more players to trade with in theory speeds things up, but in practice, all the different things that add to gameplay length still outweigh having more potential trading opportunities. In fact, many of the scenarios are listed as taking about 1 to 2 hours to complete, with Into The Desert VI taking about 100 minutes and the monstrous, 18 pt Greater Catan VI taking about 3 hours to complete. However, with most games, more players means longer games, and as far as long games go, this one is a blast. Yeah, compared to typical, "mainstream" board games, this is expensive since you need 3 others of them in the series as prerequisites to play, and this expansion is the most expensive given the item to price ratio, but if you enjoy such a unique game as Seafarers with a crowd of 5 or 6 players, then it really is worth it.
