Our bug loving four year old got this for her birthday and we all enjoy playing it together. The cardboard pieces can be bent but it hasn't been a problem yet. The bugs are identified on the cards and there is information on each card about the bug. Lots of fun!

Cranium Hoopla Review

Cranium Hoopla
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My significant other and I just love playing Cranium Hoopla. Each game takes about 20 minutes to 1/2 an hour to play and we rarely stop laughing. Players draw illustrated noun cards that must be acted out, drawn, or cleverly described as indicated by the random roll of the die. Depending on the talents (or lack thereof) of the players, it can be quite a hoot. Unlike most two player games, both individuals are working as a team against the clock. This adds to the fun and quells the arguments that can result from competitive gaming. The only negative aspect is that, like Cranium the board game, you go through the deck of cards pretty quickly making for redundant game play. All in all for the price and fun it's highly recommended (and I'm sure an expansion pack or two will be on their way).
A note of caution: I'd recommend this game for high school players and older. A lot of the subject cards contain items that may be unknown to younger players (e.g., "Sigmund Freud", "Nadia Comaneci", "Radio Flyer", etc.).

Hoopla is the outrageously fun game where every second counts, with two or more players rallying together to beat the clock. There are four categories of question cards: Cloodle (drawing, similar to Pictionary), Tongue-Tied (giving alliteration clues to a single word), Soundstage (charades), and Tweener (giving clues in the form "it's bigger than but smaller than," using two objects that imply the answer). If the players manage to work through the requisite number of cards in fifteen minutes, the game is won by all.
This game takes five minutes to learn and just 20 minutes to play. Includes: 280 Hoopla cards, a countdown timer, a ten-sided Cranium die, and a Hoopla pad and pencil.

Kill Doctor Lucky Review

Kill Doctor Lucky

This game is great! It's sort of a reverse of clue - you're trying to kill Doctor Lucky, using various weapons such as bad cream and crepe pans. It's a challenge because there can be no witnesses (if another player is in the same room, an adajent room or hallway) and the other players can also try to stop you from killing him with various cards and spite tokens. If you like games like Clue, you'll love this game.

Cities and Knights of Catan Review

Cities and Knights of Catan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After falling in love with the original game, I decided to get an expansion pack and this is the first one I got. Great decision.
A little note if you are considering this expansion: be prepared to spend more time learning the game. It takes a lot of looking back at the manual to get the hang of it.
Once you get going, you will become even more hopelessly addicted to the game. You get to build giant cathedrals which are twice the value of cities. You also get to fight the barbarian with your knights - which brings all the people playing the game to side WITH each other instead of AGAINST each other.
But I think the ultimate feature in this expansion are the new cards involved. When you draw a development card, you get the coolest options such as viewing everyone's cards and basically taking what you want... as well as other things... such as being able to hold up to 13 cards in your hands if you have the right amount of cities, etc.
Also new in this game is the merchant which allows you a 2 for 1 trade which can be moved around just like the robber.
Get this expansion!!! You will love it!

Expand the Fun and Strategy! Building on the original game, Cities and Knights adds many new, exciting elements to the Settlers of Catan. Dark clouds are gathering over the peaceful island of Catan. Wild barbarians, attracted by the wealth of Catan, sailed to attack the country. Fortunately, warning has given Catan time to meet the danger. The size of the barbarian army corresponds to the number of cities in Catan. Thus, for Catan to fend off the barbarian attack, the players must form a knight force as strong as the barbarian force. In addition to the barbarians, players compete to build the three great metropolises of Catan. Each of these magnificent centers are worth two additional victory points. To build a metropolis, players must invest in city improvements. To acquire these improvements, players must acquire the three new types of Trade Cards- Coinage, Paper, and Cloth. These cards can only be gained by building a city next to mountain, forest, or pasture hexes. Prepare for new challenges and a longer game! The Original Settlers of Catan is required to play Cities and Knights. Includes 5-6 Player Expansion for Cities and Knights. (ages 10+)

Lion Heart Board Game Review

Lion Heart Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is like Chess or Stratego, in that it takes place on a 9x8 board, and that the game is won by destroying the opponents' pieces or taking the king. Unlike Chess or Stratego, however, there is an element of luck. The degree of damage one inflicts depends on a die roll, similar to Risk, or Conquest of the Empire. The element of luck makes this game popular with the kids, because it sometimes couteracts "superior" strategy, allowing kids of different skill level to compete.
Another innovation is that the game pieces are customizeable. Each base can accomodate up to 10 individual soldiers, which allow for different strategies. For example, one can concentrate the archers and use them to pick off opponents from a distance.
Though I didn't have quite as much trouble assembling the game as the other reviewer, I don't like taking parts off plastic trees, and wish game manufacturers would provide games in ready-to-play condition. It is lamentable that the game is made of plastic pieces, but beautifully crafted games, such as Cathedral, Quoridor, or Wadjet, are generally in a much higher price range than this. This game is generally a good value.

Jumble Hand Held Review

Jumble Hand Held
Average Reviews:

I love doing Jumbles - I buy all of the Jumble books I can find. The hand-held version is not as entertaining as the books because it doesn't have the cartoons, and you can't see the bonus puzzle letters until you get to the bonus puzzle, but for when you're on the road, it's better than lugging a book and a pencil. Very easy to use, and well made, though I wish the display was a little easier to read in dim light.

I was raised with a shut the box game and that's how I learned how to add in my head. When my father died, I got his game. I now have three of these (9, 10, and 12) but this is my first shut the box for two players. I know I hated waiting around for my turn when I was a kid so now the grandkids won't have to wait and they will learn math the same way I did!

Alhambra Strategy Game - Spiel Des Jahres Game of the Year 2003 by Rio Grande Review

Alhambra Strategy Game - Spiel Des Jahres Game of the Year 2003 by Rio Grande
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alhambra is a great game plain and simple. It is suitable for children who can perform basic math and people who are not "gamers".
The basics: Everyone is dealt money cards and the object is to by pieces of your Alhambra (castle or house, if you will). If you pay the exact amount then you get another turn. At the end of each round, whomever has the most of one color gets X points. There are certain rules that govern how you may place your tiles, for example, you must be able to get to the center of your structure without leaving it (so your walls can not isolate different rooms from the center). The tile laying is the most complex part of the game but that is not saying too much. If you can't buy a piece of your Alhambra then you can draw money instead. There is a little more to it but that is the basics.
Quality: Everything from the board to the cards is really very nice. The scoring markers are made out of wood and not plastic, the cards are nice, the board is decorative, even the box that contains the game has specific compartments where all of the pieces fit.
Conclusion: If you are looking to expand from normal games like Monopoly to something a little different then this is a great start. It is no harder to learn than Monopoly or Risk and is just as fun. It is not a very "confrontational" game meaning that you can't pick on any one person so it is a good family game that will keep everyone involved throughout. The box can look a little intimidating but don't let it, expand your horizons and check this one out. It will last for years.

Granada, 1278. At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, one of the most exciting and interesting projects of the Spanish Middle Ages begins: the construction of Alhambra.Experience, over the course of the game, determines how the construction of this Spanish wonder takes place. The game is easy to learn: just a few rules and you're ready to play.1. Each round, you must decide: Do you take a currency note, so that later on you can acquire a valuable piece of the Palace - a Pavilion or a Manor for example?2. Or do you purchase one of the available Palace pieces to expand you Alhambra? Be careful as you won't receive any change. However, if you can pay the exact amount, you will get another turn immediately!3. During the scoring rounds, you will receive Victory Points for having the majority of any type of palace piece. But that's not the only way to score points: the longer your City Wall, the more protected your Alhambra will be, earning you additional points.

R and R Games Time's UP - Title Recall Review

R and R Games Time's UP - Title Recall
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This excellent game is a variation on the original Time's Up board game. In the original, you have to get your teammate(s) to call out the individual named on the card. In this version, you have them guess the title of a movie, book, poem, play, song, album, game, painting or statue. Some friends found this to be much easier, as they were more familiar with the subject matter. Easier, maybe, but just as much of a blast to play as the original game.
There are four rounds in the game, with the final round being optional. The same forty cards are used for all of the rounds, so it can really pay off to pay attention to everyone's clues. The first round is giving multiple clues to get your teammate(s) to guess the title on the card. You can use spoken or visual clues to describe the title. The second round, however, is a single word clue in conjunction with visual clues. The third round is charades with noises (no words) and the fourth round is charades without any movement.
I have shared this game with friends and family members. It seems that 6 or 8 is the ideal number, and an even number of players works best. It takes about an hour to complete a game. We have enjoyed this game so much that we have created extra cards to use in play. It is easily expanded by just adding a pack of notecards. A thirty second timer and a scorepad are the only tools used in the game.
The only drawback for this version is pretty minor. The original version includes a description of every name used in the game, while Title Recall does not include any such "answer key."

Candamir: The First Settlers Review

Candamir: The First Settlers
Average Reviews:

I am a big fan of all Settlers and the expansion, Cities and Knights, so I was very excited to play this game. But just as a warning it is very difficult to learn at first. They have a website, however, that will teach you how to play the game step-by-step. It is a great twist on the Settlers games (for those of you who play often - like us). You gain resources and ingredients by moving toward a "goal" spot you have chosen or by acheiving adventures. Your player has specific abilities such as charisma and agility giving you the ability to fight off bears or save fellow knights. Another big bonus is that, unlike the other Settlers games, you can play this one with just two players. It really is a fantastic game.

You begin with nothing more than your own two hands, and each day will bring you a host of new experiences and adventures. But soon you grow tired with simply roaming the island. Your goal is to settle down with a roof over your head, sheep to breed, and a field to sow your grain. To do this, you will need the help of the other settlers in the village. Easily done! If you supply a sword to Jared, he will give you a bag of seeds in return. Osmund needs a new chest, and offers you some sheep. Candamir would like new windows and can help you build your new house. Again and again you head out for the wilderness, hunting bears and wolves, collecting honey and rare herbs. But you must be cautious!

Double-Sided Shut the Box Game-12

"shut the box," or "tric-trac" to some (not to be confused with the French board game), is a fun quick play for kids and adults. For kids, it combines adding the pips on dice with combinations on the tiles. For adults, it's part strategy, part luck, and potential drinking game.
Other versions have one board and go to 9. This version has two boards back to back and 1-12 numbered tiles. This allows you to play alone, with an opponent, or just play the 1-9 "game." It's well built and should last a long time.

LCR - Left Center Right Dice Game - Random Color Review

LCR - Left Center Right Dice Game - Random Color
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a bartender of many years I have played this time many a night at work before the evening rush. We play it with the standard Bar Dice Cup, and three normal dice.
Each person rolls one die for each dollar bill in front of them when it's their turn - up to a Max of 3 dice (if your pile is more than $3 the extra is safe).
Rolling a 1, 2, or 3 means you keep the corresponding bill. A 4 and you pass that bill to the person before you, 5 it goes into the pot, and 6 to the next person.
Once it's down to only one person w/ Money (money slowly goes into the pot with each 5 rolled) - then they must roll one last time for each bill. If all bills end up in the pot you re-anti and it starts over...
We've played this with both a $3 and a $5 anti, it doesn't really matter, but we still keep it to a Max of 3 dice per shake. A $5 anti is a little more fun as it's impossible to pass all of your bills on the first round.
This game is fun BECAUSE you're never totally out of it. You may not have any bills in front of you - but a 4 or a 6 could send one in your direction.
Because of the gambling aspect I do not recommend for the full age group they suggest, but for passing time at a bar it is a winner.

Cranium Cariboo Review

We bought this game because the next "level" of cranium game would be cadoo which is ages 7 &up. My daughter is 4.5 and it was fun the first 2 times we played it and then it got boring. Another reviewer had the right idea when they said to make variations up. It helps the game last much longer than if there were none. My daughter really likes the bouncy balls and the key though. Bottom line is that if your kids know their abc's and 123's then I would suggest you find another game. It's a great beginning game though!
