Money Bingo Review

Money Bingo
Average Reviews:

I think all kids like counting (and mooching) money. My two sons also kept asking me how much things cost, how much money they would have left if they bought that toy, etc. As they began learning about money in school, that curiosity seemed to get even stronger.
My sons love playing board games so I purchased this bingo as a fun, interactive way for them to learn their money facts. None of us have been disappointed - and this is something we can all do together (one son is 7 and at the top of his class, the other is 9 and slightly delayed) so this is perfect for them to learn together. One note of caution, though, is to watch out for the "winner" - at first they argued or got hurt feelings because they couldn't both win.
Which brings me to the other thing I really like about this bingo game - you pick and choose which amounts you call by peeking at the deck first. This can help ensure that if I play two games - each boy gets to win once. It is also very helpful if there are certain combinations of money that the child is having trouble with - you can be sure to always call those cards to increase the repetition the child has to calculate those amounts.

The first version of "Ticket to Ride" that we played was the United States version. The European version is slightly more difficult, learning unfamiliar city names across Europe while viewing them upside down and sideways.
We have been playing every day since we purchased the game. My entire family of 4 is hooked! Now we're seeking out others who love the game and teaching friends.
You will love this game if you love competition, strategy, math, memory, and the challenge to build the longest train!

Muggins & Knock-Out Wooden Math Games Review

Muggins and Knock-Out Wooden Math Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using Muggins in my 4th grade Classroom all year AND I've also been using it at home with my 3rd grade and Kindergarten boys. Everyone LOVES it. While they know it is a math game, no one cares. Over the course of a game, students are doing hundreds of 'Mental Math' flash cards in their heads. In a nutshell, the way you play is that the board displays the numbers from 1-36 and each player takes turns rolling 3 regular dice. The player takes the three numbers that come up and tries to find an open space on the board to play their marble. Players may +/-/x/ or divide the numbers to come up with a play. For example, if I roll a 3, 4, and 2.... I could add them up to get 9, or I could do something like 3 x 4 = 12 and 12 / 2 = 6 to get 6.
The real fun begins when the board starts to fill up. For example, once the numbers 6 and 9 are taken, you can't play your marble on them and have to think of a different way to combine the numbers. Also - a big part of the game comes in the scoring. Each player gets a point for every marble they have on the board at the end of the game. However, each player earns bonus points for how many marbles they have in a run (or row).
Ignore the high price (because you get an equally fun game, Knockout, on the back side of the board) and the lame name (but remember that this game was created well before Harry Potter / Muggles terminology was) and buy this game for your family or class.
The game also comes with 3 12-Sided Dice and I use those when we play with my Kindergartener. When we play with him, we modify the rules so you can only add and subtract. He often will figure out ways to beat me and his older brother.
I have also been told that an independent study was run using this game in two 5th grade classrooms that had equal math abilities at the beginning of the year. One used the game in class throughout the year and one did not. At the end of the year, the 5th grade class that used Muggins throughout the year had improved their math scores tremendously compared to the class that did not.

Numbers League Adv Addiplication BWS 0200 Review

Numbers League Adv Addiplication BWS 0200
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
IMHO one of the most difficult tasks in creating educational games is balancing fun with education. More often than not you either get token learning or a 'game' so clunky it neither educates nor entertains. I'm thrilled to say this game is both fun and educational. I bought it to play with my 8-year-old son who is very strong at math and was looking for a challenge.
The basic play involves Super Villains who have number values assigned to them. The goal is to build Super Heroes with the same numerical values (either alone or in combination with items and/or other super heroes) allowing you to capture the villain. Each villain also has a point value. The more difficult it is to construct their number the more points they are worth (e.g. the # 6 villain will net you a point but the # 43 villain will net you three points). Once all the villains are captured the game is over and whomever has the most points wins.
The mechanics are straight-forward and the ability to work on basic addition/subtraction/multiplication/division in my son's head has really improved his mental math skills without feeling like flashcard drills. The artwork is wonderful and the mechanics are effective. The difficulty scales up nicely with the first expansion which adds non-integer cards like villain # 52.5 or a 2.5x hammer that will have even adults working through the math.
If you're looking for a fun math game, I can't recommend this product highly enough.

My kids and I really had fun playing this game. It makes for some good quality time together, which most of us don't make time for anymore. Little Tikes Numbers Busters Deluxe Starter Set of 10 Figures Review

Little Tikes Numbers Busters Deluxe Starter Set of 10 Figures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kindergarten boys in my child's school LOVE these "Busters." Using simple math skills, they do "battle" with each other. Numbers on the bottoms of the plastic figures relate to the cards that come with them. Kids love them so much they don't even realize they are doing simple math (addition and subtraction) in order to play.
Too simple for older kids, but just right for the younger crowd.

Deluxe Edition Rummikub Review

Deluxe Edition Rummikub

I've played Rummikub for 30 years and finally had to replace an old set. The colors used in this set are AWFUL. the red and orange colors are to close to the same and make game play difficult especially under tunsten light.
Find a version with the original red, blue, yellow & black.

This top quality set is specially designed to give millions of Rummikub fans added enjoyment. Similar to the Rummy that you play with cards - you try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 tiles or more, or 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers on the tiles are like card suits. This game may start rather uneventfully, but when the players start putting more and more tiles on a community playing area, the machinations of playing out your tiles can become quite complex. Includes 106 tiles, four playing racks that convert to a carrying case, timer, and instructions. For 2 to 4 players.

Math Smart: Addition Review

Math Smart: Addition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product because my 8yr old does not like math. I am always looking for games to try to entice him to practice his addition. This game is easy to learn and is based on dominoes (which he already liked). He was reluctant at first but once he got to playing the first game he declared that he liked it, a lot! He asks to play this game on a regular basis. The cards are only heavy card stock so over time and with use they will become worn or bent but the cost is low so it is worth it.

Here's an easy, entertaining way to tackle basic arithmetic! It's played like simple dominoes but teaches math facts. Each card has an addition problem on one half and a boldly circled answer to a different addition problem on the other half. Players match the correct answer with the matching problem while forming domino-type patterns with the cards. Perfect for first and second graders! Includes 100 domino-shaped cards. For 2 to 4 players.

This would be a REALLY fun game to play, if I could get my husband to play with me. I can't help it I can spell and he can't! That said, this is a really great game and does not necessarily depend on reading level to do well. It's more a matter of observation and a good eye.

Scrabble meets word search in this challenging game. Letterpress craftsmen of centuries past used to hide words within a block of text as a challenge to their peers. They called this past time "vedere parola." To celebrate this rich tradition, Front Porch has created WordSpot, a timeless game in which players try to find hidden words among an arranged board of lettered tiles. Shuffle the tiles for a different game every time. Comes packaged in a vintage wooden book that can be displayed on the shelf as part of the Bookshelf Edition Collection of games. For 2 players.

As a third grade teacher, I recommend these flash cards for my students. I purchased these for use in my classroom. The cards have held up under heavy use. I recommended these to my students because they have the problem on one side and the same problem with the answer on the opposite side. The partner is seeing the same problem with the correct answer which helps them to learn the problem as well. This type of flash card works well with partner practice as well as whole group practice. I would highly recommend this product to parents as well as teachers.

Learning Mates Monkey Math Review

Learning Mates Monkey Math

My 3 yr old and 5 yr old like this toy. It gives them another way to conceptualize addition besides counting on their fingers. It is a good, tactile learning aid. They also like playing with the bananas in other ways (lining them up in order, feeding them to the monkey, etc.). They already have some math concepts from the LeapFrog Math Circus DVD (excellent!), so this is a nice addition to that.
