Clue Mysteries Review

Clue Mysteries
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Clue Mysteries is almost Guess Who meets Clue. Players walk around the board visiting the police office, Mr. Boddy's Tudor Mansion, and the residences of the the six original Clue suspects, all to determine the culprit of a crime. The eight locations on the board provide a clue as to the guilty party and his or her whereabouts. The suspects provide hints such as the guilty person wears glasses, or has gray hair, and you use these clues to narrow down your list of possible culprits. One twist is that one of the suspects could by lying.
Overall, this game plays much differently than the original Clue. The setup involves setting each suspect's "residence" to the correct clue for this game--a process that is guided by the playbook that comes with the game. Then a brief introduction to the mystery is read, and the game begins. The players only really need to deduce who is guilty, since landing on Tudor mansion in any given turn gives away the whereabouts of the culprit. Every roll of the die results in either a visit to one of the eight main spots on the board, or the drawing of a card that usually lets you visit one of the eight main spots on the board. The game moves much more quickly than Clue or Clue FX, but mostly because it's so easy to win.
In the end, this game is much simpler and less challenging than other Clue games. Add in the fact that there are only fifty mysteries total, and you drastically reduce the replay value of the game. It's an interesting spin on a classic, but the classic proves to be more entertaining.

We gave this game as a gift last Christmas, and it was such a hit that we are buying another one for ourselves! As a homeschooler, I look forward to the skills my children will learn as they have to think moves through with an additional player. The classic game of chest is not compromised, but is enhanced as the third player brings an entirely new element to the game. I highly recommend Triple Chess to those who love this game of strategy.

We have over a dozen Think Fun games. So why do I keep buying more? Are they really that different? Are they really that fun? Well, yes, actually. The games are tossed in a basket and my kids play at least one of them almost every day, particularly my youngest child. They are portable and I always have a couple tossed into a wait bag if we have Drs. appointments or something. And they are kid magnets, whenever my kids pull one out to play, kids crowd around to see what is going on. They are visually appealing thinking games. This game has shiny gold pieces that my son loved (the picture above is washed out).
Anyway, this game is similar to rush hour, in that you are trying to move gold off of the grid. There can be more than one gold piece on the grid, and there are beige arrows that can only move in one direction, and green pyramids that don't move at all. The big difference is that your hero must push the pieces himself, so he has to be careful not to push pieces into spaces where they get blocked in by walls or pyramids.
Quite fun, and a great addition to a ThinkFun collection.

Educational Insights Isolate Review

This is a fun game, my kids enjoy the physical act of pushing the tiles around, as well as the strategy of trying to isolate their tiles without helping each other. Other pluses - it is portable and inexpensive.
However, as much as they like the game when I pull it out for them to play it, they never seem to pull it out on their own, preferring Blokus and Rumis instead. Part of that could be the fact we've lost a tile, and are using a cardboard square as a replacement, and no one ever wants to be the player with the cardboard square.
At any rate, kids who enjoy strategy games are bound to enjoy this one.

As a third grade teacher, I recommend these flash cards for my students. I purchased these for use in my classroom. The cards have held up under heavy use. I recommended these to my students because they have the problem on one side and the same problem with the answer on the opposite side. The partner is seeing the same problem with the correct answer which helps them to learn the problem as well. This type of flash card works well with partner practice as well as whole group practice. I would highly recommend this product to parents as well as teachers.

Cranium Whoonu Review

Cranium Whoonu
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My fiancee and I almost didn't buy it because the description on the container doesn't read like a fun game, but thankfully we did buy it and we've yet to play it without uproarious laughter breaking out.
The game play is simple. Anywhere from 3-6 people can play (we've even done teams when too many people were playing) and the instruction sheet CLEARLY shows you how to set up the game based on the number of players.
One person is the "Whoozit" and the other players each have 4 cards that contain a word, phrase, or concept. For instance, some of the cards are "Fizzy Water," "New Year's Eve," "The Color Black," "Hiking," and "The Olympics."
Depending on how many people are playing, the players with cards put 1 or 2 cards into the included sleeve and then the sleeve is handed to the Whoozit. The Whoozit looks at the cards, sorts them in order of most favorite to least favorite, then puts them in front of the numbered chips with the least favorite card going in front of the "1" chip , the next in front of the "2," etc.
And this is when the real fun really begins. Starting with the least favorite card, the Whoozit flips over the card and reveals the text. The person who "owned" the card takes the associated chip and then the Whoozit flips over the next card and the next and so on until the most favorite card is revealed.
Game play shifts to the next person and the whole process is repeated until each player gets a chance at being the Whoozit. After everyone has been the Whoozit, you add up the chips and a winner is declared.
The great thing about this game is not only how easy and quick it is to set up, but how the game changes each time you play it. There's a certain "luck of the draw" associated with it because you may not have any cards that apply to the Whoozit for your current turn. In that case, you have a tough decision to make, regardless of how much you know the Whoozit.
Further, the game is different every time you play it. One time, I gave "Popsicles" to my fiancee and she ranked it second-to-last. Another time we were playing, someone else gave her "Popsicles" and it was ranked second-from-first. When I gave it to her, she had many other cards she liked better. When the other person gave it to her, she only had one other card she liked more. Imagine my surprise to see "Popsicles" ranked so high that time!
During the holidays, we played this with her family, my family, and twice with a group of friends. We played it again last night with a group of friends that didn't know each other at all. Every single time, the laughter went crazy and we played for hours on end. A couple of times, we changed to a different game just to do something different and each time we ended up going back to Whoonu because it was so much more fun.
This isn't a "how much do you know the other person" game as much as it is just a good old fashioned great time. Knowing the people CAN help, but with the "luck of the draw" aspect, it sometimes doesn't matter.
Bottom Line: FUN!

Subtraction 0–12 (all facts) Flash Cards Review

Subtraction 0–12 (all facts) Flash Cards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It makes sense to only offer addition flash cards 0 to 9 (most sets go to 12). But subtraction flash cards really need to be 0 to 18. Trend recognizes this, but you have to purchase the 0 to 18 flash cards in two sets. This set covers 0 to 12. You can do a search: "Trend subtraction flash cards" to find the 13-18 set.
What I like about these flash cards is they are plain-vanilla. No frills, no color, one problem with the solution on the other side.
Every combination of problem is offered. While learning, I generally "group" my math facts by families....i.e. 9-7 on one card, and then 9-2 on the next. If my son or daughter gets stuck, I give them a hint by showing the next card. It works quite well to jog memory, and to assimilate family facts. Then, after a set of fact families are learned, I mix them up completely.

Cranium Whoonu (Tin) Review

Cranium Whoonu (Tin)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those in my family have become big fans of the Cranium games, and Whoonu is another winner. It's simple enough to be learned in minutes, yet engaging enough to keep the interest of our 12- and 14-year old daughters.
The basic concept: after receiving a hand of cards that spell out different activities or subjects (example, "skydiving," "ice cream," "little dogs,"), you choose those that would be the favorite of the person featured for that hand. You score more points for guessing most accurately. There are always laughs, and a few half-hearted arguments--"but you told me you loved olives!" If you play with strangers, you'll find out more about them. If you play with close companions, you'll still find nuances to their interests that you never knew before. Whoonu!
The main drawback to the game is its lack of 2-person rules. My wife and I created our own. We both draw four cards, then place them facedown in the order we think fits the other best. The ones that are in the right order earn point chips.
The bottom line with this game is fun, interaction, and connection. These are the same elements that have drawn us to the Cranium line in the first place, and we were not disappointed.

It's an easy-to-play hoot for all ages as players pick cards and try to guess each other's least to most favorite things. The categories and choices are diverse and clever and sure to spur laughs. ThinkFun Hoppers Review

ThinkFun Hoppers
Average Reviews:

This is a great toy to develop your child's strategic thinking. The game is relatively simple. Organize your frogs as per the cards, jump one frog over the other and remove the jumped-over frog. The objective is to leave just one frog. You can only jump `adjacent' frogs along the lines (see picture).
The recommended age is 8 but younger children (supervised!) are just as enthralled. I had to improvise on the instructions, but I've taught the concepts to two 3 year olds - my buddy's son and my own. You will be amazed that they get it!
It is the greatest travel game. My son got this when he was 3 years old, and 4 years later it is still his first choice when we ask him to pick some toys for a trip........and he has a GameBoy!!
It is very durable, constructed very well and has seen no wear in 4 years of regular use. This is one of the toys that'll, literally, last you a life-time.
This is definitely a precursor for any parent looking to teach their kids Chess. Solving each situation requires you to think a few steps ahead.
This is probably the least expensive way to develop a new dimension in your child's brain.
VARIATIONS:
This toy also comes with a single "Red Frog". The objective is to leave the red frog standing.
OTHER SIMILAR TOYS:
FlipIT - This toy made by the same company, is a more difficult version of Hoppers. It is a 4X4 grid with Turtles instead of Frogs. The turtles can be placed on their bellies (green side up) or can be turned-turtle (orange side up).
One jumps over the turtles but the turtles do not come off the board - they just flip over. They flip over each time they're jumped over - green to orange and orange to green. The objective is to turn all turtles the right (green) side up.

ThinkFun Chocolate Fix Review

ThinkFun Chocolate Fix
Average Reviews:

Here we have another winner from the folks at ThinkFun. My 9 year old received this toy yesterday; I have played it a bit and found it quite challenging even at the "advanced" level (it goes up higher to "expert"). The premise of the game is straightforward. You have 9 chocolates in three colors and three shapes; you are given clues as to how to place them in the "chocolate box". Not as easy as one might think! There is a spiral notebook of sets of clues with various difficulty levels. My 9 year old will do ok with the "beginner" and "intermediate" levels; the "advanced" level will challenge her but each card sort of guides the user's thinking to the next step. "Expert" will be hard for my 9 year old. A nice feature for parents/users is that this is a one person game. Or at least it's intended to be. There's no reason why two people couldn't work through a puzzle together; it would be a great way to use teamwork and share the logical thought process. But it's nice to have a game for kids that doesn't require a partner since a friend is not always around and a parent is not always available to play. But this is not just a kid's game. It should provide quite a bit of enjoyment to adults. A great way to keep the mind sharp! Like other ThinkFun games, all the pieces fit nicely in a cloth bag; so nice not to have yet another bulky broken box on the toyshelf.

Pressman Giant Garden Chess Set Review

Pressman Giant Garden Chess Set

This chess set is wonderful, it has inspired at least two children who have been to our home to learn how to play chess.
My own children love playing with this set. In addition to playing chess, sometimes they recreate the Fritz and Chesster games they've played and printed from the computer, sometimes they make up puzzles for each other "Move one piece and put my king into check", sometimes they haul the chess pieces around the house to do double duty for some other imaginative play venture.
I do wish there was some way to weight the pieces, they are hollow plastic with felt bottoms. I've debated opening them up to put sand inside of them, but haven't done so yet. Anyway, I'm not sure how this game would hold up outside on a windy day, but regardless, we have been very pleased with this chess set.

ThinkFun Tipover Review

ThinkFun Tipover
Average Reviews:

This, like most ThinkFun games, is a solitary thinking game, but my kids really like it. To play, you pick a card and set up the game pieces accordingly. Your goal is to get your man from his starting location to the designated ending location. He can walk along crates and tip them over to get to the next crate (the tipping is quite gratifying to the kids for some reason). Once a crate is tipped over, you can't move it, although you may find yourself backtracking over it. If you are stuck, the answers are printed on the back of each card. When you are finished, toss it into the handy storage bag until the next time you or your kids need an interesting diversion.
It is not specifically an educational game, but it does provides practice in visualization, spatial skills, planning a few moves ahead, and thinking!
I do wish there was an easy way to get replacement pieces. We've lost a couple of crates, but can still play most of the cards.
All in all, a great game.

You'll flip over Tipover - an exciting 3-D challenge that's a brainteaser and brain pleaser in one! Players control their own fate using only crates to create paths. The object of Tipover is to get your Tipper playing piece from start to finish by tipping crates to create paths. To start, set up crates of different colors and heights on the game grid to match any one of 40 beginner-to-expert card challenges. Next, tip over the crates to connect your Tipper to the red crate which is your final destination. There's a catch; your Tipper can't jump over empty grid spaces. Only you control your fate by tipping over the right crate. Measures 8.875"W x 8"H x 2.5"D.

This is a great game for new readers and for readers who need some extra help and practice. As a retired teacher and now a tutor, I'm using this with a second grader who is having trouble with reading. She really enjoys this game and is getting much better at spelling short words, as well as recognizing longer words because of the skills she is learning with this game. I'd recommend this to anyone with a young reader! P.S. It can also be used with older readers just as a fun game by having a time limit to make a certain amount of words.
