Excalibur World Chess Hall of Fame Collector's Edition Classic Review

Excalibur World Chess Hall of Fame Collector's Edition Classic

I purchased this chess set for my son for Christmas. It is a very nice set but the board is large. I measured the board and is is 22 inches. It did not give the board dimensions in the description so I thought it would be good to know. At first my son was skeptical of the burgundy pieces but they grew on him and now he thinks they are unique. The pieces are very nice.Excalibur World Chess Hall of Fame Collector's Edition Classic

Drueke 907.00 Roll Up Chess Board with 3 3/4-Inch Chessmen Review

Drueke 907.00 Roll Up Chess Board with 3 3/4-Inch Chessmen

Drueke is a great name in chess and cribbage gear, so I bought this sight-unseen online. I was most disappointed. The mousepad style floppy board was great. The carrying bag was great. The style of the pieces was good. The problem was that the weights are not all glued in very well. There were a few that rattled around. I returned it and bought the Plastic Collectors set from House of Staunton. I'll never go back. The detail, finish, and build quality are all superb. I have other Drueke chess sets and was not disappointed. They really need to go back to their old (high) stnadards of quality control. Apparently, this is what happens when you pack up and move manufacturing to China...

Our son just turned 10 and before Christmas was quit interested in fractals. Then I saw this and though hmmm. He has really enjoyed creating with it. Can't say it holds his interst over a video game but it does hold his attention when he chooses to play with them. Great for working on visual and spacial relationships.

Crack The Case Review

Crack The Case

This has to be one of the most fun games I have played in college so far. It consists of the clue giver/story teller reading a situation off the given card aloud, i.e "A man lies dead on the ground. Next to him is a marble. Who killed him, how and why?" By asking yes or no questions, the other people must figure out the answers to the questions provided. It can be frustrating at first because you are given so little information, but by thinking out of the box players realize that a jealous girlfriend glued a marble to a tightrope, and when the man, a tightroping bicyclist, went across it during the circus, he fell to his death. Some of the answers are way out in left field, but the game always has you going "Ohhhhh..." at the end. Extremely entertaining, but once you run out of cards essentially you cannot play the game again.

Hive 3Rd Edition Review

Hive 3Rd Edition

This game is quite chess-like in the nature of its strategy, which I like. Hive is a seemingly simple game, with the straightforward rules about movement and a small number of types of tiles. It isn't easy to win, though. The biggest challenge is reconciling that none of the pieces on the board will ever leave once they're placed, and that some of your pieces (one placed) may never move again due to the dynamics of the hive (which your player tiles collectively create).
In the end you have a durable, highly portable, thinkers game. It's great for trips, indoor weather or afternoon lulls. I find it to be unique and fun, and would recommend it to most anyone who's enjoyed playing chess or go.

Hive is a board game with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.

ThinkFun Tipover Review

ThinkFun Tipover
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This, like most ThinkFun games, is a solitary thinking game, but my kids really like it. To play, you pick a card and set up the game pieces accordingly. Your goal is to get your man from his starting location to the designated ending location. He can walk along crates and tip them over to get to the next crate (the tipping is quite gratifying to the kids for some reason). Once a crate is tipped over, you can't move it, although you may find yourself backtracking over it. If you are stuck, the answers are printed on the back of each card. When you are finished, toss it into the handy storage bag until the next time you or your kids need an interesting diversion.
It is not specifically an educational game, but it does provides practice in visualization, spatial skills, planning a few moves ahead, and thinking!
I do wish there was an easy way to get replacement pieces. We've lost a couple of crates, but can still play most of the cards.
All in all, a great game.

You'll flip over Tipover - an exciting 3-D challenge that's a brainteaser and brain pleaser in one! Players control their own fate using only crates to create paths. The object of Tipover is to get your Tipper playing piece from start to finish by tipping crates to create paths. To start, set up crates of different colors and heights on the game grid to match any one of 40 beginner-to-expert card challenges. Next, tip over the crates to connect your Tipper to the red crate which is your final destination. There's a catch; your Tipper can't jump over empty grid spaces. Only you control your fate by tipping over the right crate. Measures 8.875"W x 8"H x 2.5"D.
