Bananagrams 6 Games S Review

I was given a Spanish version of Bananagrams that I used for my Spanish classes. I was so impressed that I invested in 6 sets of the English version from Amazon. The "Scrabble-like" format, but on an individual basis, uses all of the player's own tiles. It creates a need for quick action to compose a crossword using all of their tiles first. My colleagues and I use them for reinforcment in reading and spelling and as incentive rewards. What a nifty tool! Students quickly learn word patterns. Students are fully engaged and don't hesitate to challenge each other's words too. The most often heard phrase? "Is_______ a word?"

The first version of "Ticket to Ride" that we played was the United States version. The European version is slightly more difficult, learning unfamiliar city names across Europe while viewing them upside down and sideways.
We have been playing every day since we purchased the game. My entire family of 4 is hooked! Now we're seeking out others who love the game and teaching friends.

Got this game for my 12 y/o grandson for Christmas. At first he didn't show much interest in it (after all it's not electronic, hahaha!) But once we talked him into playing a game, he couldn't stop. The pad is great for keeping score on and giving suggestions of different versions of the game. Thank You.

I'm the Executive Director of the largest Interfaith Council in Southern California called the South Coast Interfaith Council. In the summer of 2010 we used this game as a part of our Interfaith Cafes. It was incredibly well received and people loved playing it! The game really allows everyone to get to know one another and their thoughts and beliefs. I would highly recommend it to others; a fantastic product!

Lo Yo "The Game Where Everyone Shouts"... Lo Yo Review

Lo Yo The Game Where Everyone Shouts... Lo Yo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recently I read an article that was printed in our local newspaper about some great games for the winter months. I was very intrigued to read it because I'm addicted to games, but I'd never heard of most of the ones mentioned. So I started to seek out these games in order to learn more about them. And one of the games that I happened upon was Lo Yo!
What do you get with Lo Yo!? Inside the tuckbox you will receive a rulebook, a score pad, one 6-sided die, and a deck of cards (5 cards each valued 1-9, 10 Oh No cards valued 15, and 10 Lo Yo cards valued 0.)
How does Lo Yo! work? In each round of this game players are dealt 4 cards facedown. They are allowed to look at 2 of their cards, but not the other 2. Then players take turns drawing a card from the draw pile or the discard pile and choosing whether to replace one of their facedown cards with this new card or just discard the new card.
Turns continue in this fashion until one player thinks they have the lowest total for their cards, and they call "Lo Yo!" Then all the other players get one last turn and scores are calculated. Each player gets points equal to the total of their cards. If the player who called Lo Yo doesn't have the lowest total, they must double their score. If the player who called Lo Yo does have the lowest total, they roll the die and can choose to subtract the number on the die from their score or add it to an opponent's score.
You play 6 rounds in this fashion and the lowest score at the end wins. There is one twist however starting after the 3rd round. If any players are losing by 20 points or more, they get a special ability. If they successfully call Lo Yo, they get to subtract 3 times the die roll from their score.
What does Blott think of Lo Yo!? Although familiar in its mechanics, this game adds a couple of nice twists to keep things interesting. It's definitely not a game that I will pull out every time we get together to play games, but it has enough in the bluffing and guessing that make it interesting for most people I have played with. I am a bit disappointed that the catch-up mechanism only benefits the person who calls Lo Yo, and I also wish the rules were laid out a little better to make it easier to find certain details. Still it's a light filler game that hasn't been a flop with anyone that I have played with yet.
Who will enjoy Lo Yo!? I think families are the target audience here, and I can really see it being successful. The teens I played with had quite a laugh and really got into the game, even roaring in agony when accidentally discarding a 0, or when continuously drawing 15s. But a group of adult gamers will most likely find the game a bit too luck-based and lacking in any real decisions. But I can see the age range going quite young on this game, because of the simple rules and the colorful artwork, so this is a great game for playing with kids.
Any parting comments about Lo Yo!? Some people may recognize the mechanics in this game as they are very reminiscent of some other games out there. I remember playing something similar with regular playing cards when growing up, and I believe that the game Rat-a-Tat Cat is very similar as well. But the mechanics are proven to be solid in those other games, so there's nothing really wrong with this game. That being said, if you own another game with the same mechanics I don't think that there is enough new here in order to warrant owning both.

LoYo! has all the elements of a classic - Strategy, Risk, Memorization and Luck! But most of all, it is FUN and easy to learn! The object of the game is to have the lowest score at the end of six rounds of play. Try to get LoYo! cards and avoid the dreaded OH NO! cards. Think you have the lowest score?, then shout "LoYo"... But watch out! Someone may catch you and double your score! Feel like giving up? Don't worry, there's LoYo! Catch-Up. Do you feel like taking more risk? Add LoYo! Challenge or if you want a mind boggling experience try LoYo! Headache. Want to be one of the first persons to play the latest game craze that is sweeping the country? Put on your poker face and challenge family or friends to a game of LoYo!. LoYo! is fun for EVERYONE - no matter what your age! LoYo! is sure to be a favorite of yours for years to come.

Cranium Whoonu (Tin) Review

Cranium Whoonu (Tin)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those in my family have become big fans of the Cranium games, and Whoonu is another winner. It's simple enough to be learned in minutes, yet engaging enough to keep the interest of our 12- and 14-year old daughters.
The basic concept: after receiving a hand of cards that spell out different activities or subjects (example, "skydiving," "ice cream," "little dogs,"), you choose those that would be the favorite of the person featured for that hand. You score more points for guessing most accurately. There are always laughs, and a few half-hearted arguments--"but you told me you loved olives!" If you play with strangers, you'll find out more about them. If you play with close companions, you'll still find nuances to their interests that you never knew before. Whoonu!
The main drawback to the game is its lack of 2-person rules. My wife and I created our own. We both draw four cards, then place them facedown in the order we think fits the other best. The ones that are in the right order earn point chips.
The bottom line with this game is fun, interaction, and connection. These are the same elements that have drawn us to the Cranium line in the first place, and we were not disappointed.

How well do you and your family know each other? Cranium Whoonu offers a fun-filled, loads-of-laughs way to find out. It's an easy-to-play hoot for all ages as players pick cards and try to guess each other's least to most favorite things. The categories and choices are diverse and clever and sure to spur laughs. Whoonu is perfect for the whole family, as it's easy to learn and takes only 10-15 minutes to play a round.

My mother celebrated her 81st birthday this year. There are two things which are very special to her...the grandchildren and the Chicago Cubs. For her birthday, the grandchildren were flown home for a visit, AND I bought her the Chicago Cubs Uno game. The three of them spent more hours than they could even count playing Uno when the "kids" were actually just that, kids. Now that they are 21 and 20, having something to do at Gramma's house is sometimes a challenge. HOWEVER....The Cubs Uno game was the ticket. Brought back fond memories for all. For all you die hard cub fans, grandparents, or just someone who loves to play card games....this is a winner!

Pairs in Pears Review

Pairs in Pears

We are Bananagram fans. So the idea of new games - Pairs in Pears and Appleletters built up some serious excitement.
Neither of the new games quite hit the potential of Bananagrams. Without the predecessor, either of these would have been new, fun and creative.
Pairs is a very fast moving game. The goal is to create two or three two word sets. Ideally, you will have matching "suite" letters (there are four different suites) which increases the point value of the win. The more letters you use, the better the score.
We played several "hands" then moved on to Appleletters in the same evening. All of us (five from age 24 to 52) preferred Appleletters to Pairs in Pears but loved Bananagrams the best. One of the fun things that we didn't do but thought of would be to turn all the tiles face down and play a huge memory game or turn it into a rummy type of game where you collect suits of letters. If you have Pairs, be creative and see what you can come up with. If you haven't purchased Pairs in Pears and are wondering which of the three to buy, Bananagrams is the best in our opinion, but Pairs wouldn't be a waste, especially if you can get a good deal.

We found out about bananagrams from a friend of ours. ever since that its been a big hit for our family. We bought the jumbo set, which is two bananas. When you combine the tiles it makes the pile bigger which creates a longer and more complex game. Its a little more challenging because you get twice the tiles and have to make a bigger crossword.

Gloom Review

Gloom
Average Reviews:

Gloom is a big hit with my 11- and 14-year old daughters and myself. It is best played with people who like to embellish the stories of how such bad things can happen to these pathetic characters. If you like creativity, or promoting creative thinking and storytelling, this game might very well be for you. It is not for people who are easily offended, small children, overly competitive or those without a sense of humor.

Gloom: The Game of Inauspicious Incidents and Grave ConsequencesThe world of Gloom is a sad and benighted place. The sky is gray, the tea is cold, and a new tragedy lies around every corner. Debt, disease, heartache, and packs of rabid flesh-eating mice -- just when it seems like things can't get any worse, they do. But some say that one's reward in the afterlife is based on the misery endured in life. If so, there may yet be hope -- if not in this world, then in the peace that lies beyond. In the Gloom card game, you assume control of the fate of an eccentric family of misfits and misanthropes. The goal of the game is sad, but simple: you want your characters to suffer the greatest tragedies possible before passing on to the well-deserved respite of death. You'll play horrible mishaps like Pursued by Poodles or Mocked by Midgets on your own characters to lower their Self-Worth scores, while trying to cheer your opponents' characters with marriages and other happy occasions that pile on positive points. The player with the lowest total Family Value wins.Printed on transparent plastic cards, Gloom features an innovative design by noted RPG author Keith Baker. Multiple modifier cards can be played on top of the same character card; since the cards are transparent, elements from previously played modifier cards either show through or are obscured by those played above them. You'll immediately and easily know the worth of every character, no matter how many modifiers they have. You've got to see (through) this game to believe it!For 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up.

Scrabble Apple Review

If you like scrabble, but hate waiting while other players ponder, this is
the game for you. You don't take turns -- any player can call out a word they
see at any time, and other players words can be stolen if you can take one
of their words and add available letters to create a new word. This really
speeds up the game and makes it more exciting.
This was a gift to my eight year old daughter. She has always been a good
speller, but this game has helped build her vocabulary and spelling ability.
I have found that she is faster than I am at getting words. The only reason
I win more often than she does is because I know more words. In a few years
it will be a struggle for me to win when playing her.
One minor drawback: With the letters turned upside down, the yellow plastic
is thin enough that you can tell which ones are red before turning them
over. I recommend leaving the tiles in the cloth apple sack and reaching
in without looking to draw new tiles instead of turning them upside down
on the table.
I recommend Scrabble Apple for children and adults. My family enjoys it.

Toss Up Review

Toss Up
Average Reviews:

We taught our 4 year old so that we could play together as a family and he loves it! He plays simply, but, just understanding that a green die is good and a red die is not works for him. He often beats his ten year old brother who keeps the score. It's simple. You can take it anywhere. There's a little math with the scorekeeping and a little strategy for the older kids. I marked down the durability of this toy only because keeping track of all the dice seems to be a challenge at our house.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Toss Up

It's a little strategy, a lot of luck, and a whole bunch of dice-tossin' fun in this new and addictive game. The object of the game is to be the player with the highest score over 100, which you rack up by throwing the dice and counting up the greens. As long as you roll greens you can continue to play and rack up points. But, just like a traffic light, you need to watch out for those red dice or your turn will stop and you'll lose all of your points. So who will win the game? It's a toss up! Game contains 10 Toss Up! dice, a reusable plastic storage click-case and instructions in both English and Spanish. For 2 - 6 players.

Bananagrams Review

Bananagrams
Average Reviews:

Do you like Scrabble but get hung up trying to use those special point squares, are bummed when someone "steals your spot", or dragged down by Debbie Dictionary ("just let me look up this one word") or Slow Joe (who takes 20 minutes for each turn)? Well you would love Bananagrams, because it solves those problems. There are no special squares (or squares at all), no points on the letters (all are worth the same) and no time to dawdle. You are instead rewarded for speed and flexibility in making your own crossword. You can completely pull apart your crossword and start from scratch if you need to or just swap out a letter here and there, but don't get caught with a bunch of spare letters when an opponent goes out!
It is exciting and challenging to play this game with adults, but it can be fun to include the kids. You can easily adapt the rules to suit yourself. We "handicap" the adults by drawing two tiles for every one the kids draw. You can play solitaire or have several players.
A similar game that I also love is Learning Resources' "Take Four". If you are the type who would prefer to have a grid to keep those tiles straight, or likes to have a few "jokers" thrown in, you might prefer this. But Banagrams is far more portable and much cheaper. I like both of these games so much (as well as the spelling card games Quiddler, My Word, and Tri-Virsity) that the old Scrabble board is gathering dust.
