(More customer reviews)Recently I read an article that was printed in our local newspaper about some great games for the winter months. I was very intrigued to read it because I'm addicted to games, but I'd never heard of most of the ones mentioned. So I started to seek out these games in order to learn more about them. And one of the games that I happened upon was Lo Yo!
What do you get with Lo Yo!? Inside the tuckbox you will receive a rulebook, a score pad, one 6-sided die, and a deck of cards (5 cards each valued 1-9, 10 Oh No cards valued 15, and 10 Lo Yo cards valued 0.)
How does Lo Yo! work? In each round of this game players are dealt 4 cards facedown. They are allowed to look at 2 of their cards, but not the other 2. Then players take turns drawing a card from the draw pile or the discard pile and choosing whether to replace one of their facedown cards with this new card or just discard the new card.
Turns continue in this fashion until one player thinks they have the lowest total for their cards, and they call "Lo Yo!" Then all the other players get one last turn and scores are calculated. Each player gets points equal to the total of their cards. If the player who called Lo Yo doesn't have the lowest total, they must double their score. If the player who called Lo Yo does have the lowest total, they roll the die and can choose to subtract the number on the die from their score or add it to an opponent's score.
You play 6 rounds in this fashion and the lowest score at the end wins. There is one twist however starting after the 3rd round. If any players are losing by 20 points or more, they get a special ability. If they successfully call Lo Yo, they get to subtract 3 times the die roll from their score.
What does Blott think of Lo Yo!? Although familiar in its mechanics, this game adds a couple of nice twists to keep things interesting. It's definitely not a game that I will pull out every time we get together to play games, but it has enough in the bluffing and guessing that make it interesting for most people I have played with. I am a bit disappointed that the catch-up mechanism only benefits the person who calls Lo Yo, and I also wish the rules were laid out a little better to make it easier to find certain details. Still it's a light filler game that hasn't been a flop with anyone that I have played with yet.
Who will enjoy Lo Yo!? I think families are the target audience here, and I can really see it being successful. The teens I played with had quite a laugh and really got into the game, even roaring in agony when accidentally discarding a 0, or when continuously drawing 15s. But a group of adult gamers will most likely find the game a bit too luck-based and lacking in any real decisions. But I can see the age range going quite young on this game, because of the simple rules and the colorful artwork, so this is a great game for playing with kids.
Any parting comments about Lo Yo!? Some people may recognize the mechanics in this game as they are very reminiscent of some other games out there. I remember playing something similar with regular playing cards when growing up, and I believe that the game Rat-a-Tat Cat is very similar as well. But the mechanics are proven to be solid in those other games, so there's nothing really wrong with this game. That being said, if you own another game with the same mechanics I don't think that there is enough new here in order to warrant owning both.
