Conceptual Bingo-Decimals Review

My 6th grade students love this game. It's amazing how many math facts can be easily taught using this game. My students beg me to continue playing even when BINGO has been called or the bell has rung.
Teachers love this game for the variety. Each card has multiple problems, all with the same answer, enabling you to play this throughout the year, focusing on various techniques each time.
When I play, I write the problem on the board and work it at the same time the students are working it. I write the answers in a column to keep everyone honest. We usually can do 20-30 problems in 1/2 hour.
I'd also highly recommend their Fraction Bingo and Algebra Bingo.

I bought this toy for my son who is having difficulty in math (mainly fractions, but I thought this may help us get a good foundation), he did not enjoy it and was very bored through out it. Maybe it was too simple for him, I don't know.

BANK ACCOUNT
Average Reviews:

This isn't the most creative or original game. It is very educational and despite the paperwork of filling out checks, deposit slips etc, I am surprised that my kids are excited to play this game again and again. The first person to have $5,000 in the bank wins, the game shows the flow of money in the community, and inspires trust in the economy in kids. There are surprise financial obligations as well as surprise financial boons. The game is about an hour long.

Monopoly Town Review

Monopoly Town
Average Reviews:

I bought this game for my sons 5th birthday thinking it'd be a lot of fun to play and he could play with ease. Imagine the disappointment he and I both felt when it didn't work. The car counts the spaces as you move it, however it didn't always register the spaces.. sometimes I could move 4-5 spaces and it'd only count 1, and sometimes I'd move 1 space as told and it'd tell me to move back 3. We returned it and got a new one hoping it was just a defective one, but no, the second one was just as horrible. We returned it and are looking at other games for him now.

My kids and I really had fun playing this game. It makes for some good quality time together, which most of us don't make time for anymore. We didn't get bored at all, in fact when my kids friends come over they always want to play it. So I don't understand the other reviews. We enjoyed that you can take a chance and keep going. I would recommend it highly!

Timing It Right Gr 2-6 Board Game Review

Timing It Right Gr 2-6 Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's easier for the kids to have fun when they don't know they are supposed to be learning!
The minimum age recommendation for Timing It Right is 7. Waiting this long would miss out on the most fun and educational parts of this game. A little flexibility is necessary, but my 5 year old son plays this game with ease and enjoys it very much.
The die is in time increments (5 mins. to 2 hrs.), not dots. As you move around the board, you are moving through a school day--waking up, eating breakfast, catching the bus, and on. You roll a time period and move ahead that much time. The directions have the player setting the a small clock to show their time on the board. You look that time up in a booklet and follow the directions for that time, which say things like "spell a word backward and move ahead 2 hours," "waiting in the playground is no fun alone, move another player to your spot," etc.
Having to do all these steps for each turn can take a little getting used to, and the booklet is rather cumbersome to flip through. At one point, we temporarily lost the unique die, and I had to make a fake one of of paper.
The fun of this game is in the flexibility. My son can set the clock in 15 min. increments, but I don't have him do it if the time is 20 or 25 mins. after, for example, because it's beyond his ability and would be frustrating. However, he's now counting by 5s if he rolls 15 or 30 mins., which is pretty cool for someone not yet in kindergarten.
This is a game that we also played with my daughter when she was 6, and she will play it now (9). It's a fun game that is teaching something very useful and specific. I think it's a lot more fun if the parents can use this game in the way that works best for their kids, instead of following the directions to a t. Definitely recommended.

Learning Mates Monkey Math Review

Learning Mates Monkey Math
Average Reviews:

My 3 yr old and 5 yr old like this toy. It gives them another way to conceptualize addition besides counting on their fingers. It is a good, tactile learning aid. They also like playing with the bananas in other ways (lining them up in order, feeding them to the monkey, etc.). They already have some math concepts from the LeapFrog Math Circus DVD (excellent!), so this is a nice addition to that.

I purchased this for my second grade daughter who does not like math. We own the Money Bags game and it had gotten too easy for her. The description of this game made it sound like it had levels of play that would be along her level of math. I was disappointed that it only has 50 cent pieces and dollars. I was hoping for regular currency to be able to count and use (like the Money Bags game). When playing with four the game goes on and on and is quite boring. It is not mathematically challenging either since everything costs either .50 or $1.

Double-Sided 9-Number Shut the Box Game Set

I was raised with a shut the box game and that's how I learned how to add in my head. When my father died, I got his game. I now have three of these (9, 10, and 12) but this is my first shut the box for two players. I know I hated waiting around for my turn when I was a kid so now the grandkids won't have to wait and they will learn math the same way I did!

Pressman Smath Review

Pressman Smath
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is a lot like Scrabble, only you use numbers to make math equations rather than using letters to make words. It can be played on different levels; for instance, for younger children you can eliminate the division signs or brackets to make it easier. Just like Scrabble, the harder-to-use numbers and signs have higher point values, and there are bonus squares on the board that can also increase the point value of a single tile or the whole equation. Players add on to existing equations on the board. There are enough angles to the game to keep it interesting. Towards the end, the game gets more frustrating as there are few spaces left on the board to fit equations in. If you like Scrabble and math, you'll enjoy this game. It is also a fun and social way to help kids practice their math skills.

Smath is the game that makes math fun. Now you can sharpen your math skills the fun way. This game makes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division more exciting than ever.
Players use number and symbol tiles to make math equations crossword puzzle-style. Use the tiles in your hand and the ones already on the board to build your own new equations.

Smath can be played on two different levels - one for beginners and one for more advanced players. For beginners, start with simple addition and subtraction equations. As players improve their math skills, multiplication and division can be added to game play and equations. Players score points by adding the value of the tiles they use for each equation formed. Try to increase your score by covering bonus squares with your tiles. Includes: Smath game board, 184 playing pieces, four game racks and complete instructions.

These cards are really neat, I hadn't seen them before but bought them for my granddaughter who is 2 years behind in school. We'll be using them a lot this summer to hopefully get her a basic idea of how math works. She's easily distracted and frustrated so these cards are nice because working in books and print gets too boring for her.

Equate: The Equation Thinking Game Review

Equate: The Equation Thinking Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We played the game with gifted kids and adults age 9-40-plus and were surprised to find the kids were able to hold their own. But, like scrabble, the turns take forever! And, the scrabble concept doesn't really work well with the operators (=.+,-); too soon you run out of space on the sides as equations are much longer than words. You can't put two equations as close as two words and so there is much less opportunity for creativity in placing your pieces (e.g. you cannot make two equations in two directions; sometimes there are only one or two locations where it is possible to add an equation). We were getting scores of 10-30 points per turn, then one person added the following to an existing equation "0 X 34567 5/6 +." By hitting a triple equation score and got more than 270 points on one hand thereby effectively ending the game that had been relatively even. It seemed unfair even to him! Great idea flawed by long waits and poor design; unlikely to play it twice. C
