(More customer reviews)This game is like Chess or Stratego, in that it takes place on a 9x8 board, and that the game is won by destroying the opponents' pieces or taking the king. Unlike Chess or Stratego, however, there is an element of luck. The degree of damage one inflicts depends on a die roll, similar to Risk, or Conquest of the Empire. The element of luck makes this game popular with the kids, because it sometimes couteracts "superior" strategy, allowing kids of different skill level to compete.
Another innovation is that the game pieces are customizeable. Each base can accomodate up to 10 individual soldiers, which allow for different strategies. For example, one can concentrate the archers and use them to pick off opponents from a distance.
Though I didn't have quite as much trouble assembling the game as the other reviewer, I don't like taking parts off plastic trees, and wish game manufacturers would provide games in ready-to-play condition. It is lamentable that the game is made of plastic pieces, but beautifully crafted games, such as Cathedral, Quoridor, or Wadjet, are generally in a much higher price range than this. This game is generally a good value.
