Wood Expressions 15" Folding Wood Chess Set Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The picture above is not the exact chess set I received. The board itself looks cheaper and the wood is not as richly colored as the photo. The pieces, however, are very nice; they are felt-bottomed and there are elastic straps to hold them inside the folding board.

Chess Set Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This high-quality 10-inch Camphor Wood Magnetic Chess Set is the best and most durable board you're going to find in this size. Sold all over the web, this is a good price. The only negative are the overly small and undermagnetized pieces. Similar to other magnetic sets, it does not include extra Queens. I've purchased many chess boards and sets over the years, but I play on this one more than all the others combined. Great for burning time when waiting in Doctors' offices, planes, or anywhere you're forced to wait for the world.
This board makes a great gift to yourself, or heck, even to someone else.

Senator European Hand Carved Chess Set - 3" King Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)It is a nice chess set and I am enjoying playing chess. But it says that it is 'hand carved' and I find that hard to believe. It is an ok set, though.

Drueke 826.42 18-Inch Champion Chess Set with 3-Inch Chessmen Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)If you really like chess and you would like to have a set that is both functional and beautiful, Drueke is the way to go. They are about the only manufacturer of high quality chess equipment left in America. The dark squares and trim are American Black Walnut, and the light squares are Aspen. The part that is really great is that it is made from solid blocks of wood. Most decent chess boards are veneered, which means that there is a very thin layer of nice wood glued on top of some very cheap wood. This is not such a bad idea, as chessboards do not get heavy duty use. These higher end Drueke models are solid though. Even though it's not necessary, it just exudes a feeling of quality. It is heavy and solid. If you turn it over, it is just as well finished on the B side as the top. If you don't like the sawed trim treatment on the top side, flip it over. The walnut is simply beautiful. I'm embarassed to admit it, but this chessboard is the most beautiful piece of furniture in my house. :) If you pair it up with a set of Drueke pieces of appropriate size you will truly have an heirloom piece. Please note that if you want something for tournament use or something super rugged, you would be better served by a set of solid plastic pieces and a roll-up tournament size mat board, and for about 1/10 the cost. It is kind of like this coffee table analogy: You could have a coffee table made from cinder blocks and a piece of plywood, but it doesn't really give you that pride of ownership that a fine piece would. Yes, it will serve you well for as long as you can stand to look at it. However, you just don't look at it and get a warm feeling inside. You won't go out of your way to show it to people. This is your oppurtunity to own something of very high quality for not too much money. Yes, I know that $100+ is a lot for a chess set, but it isn't a lot for fine furniture or something nice to display which also shows you have a good mind to go with your good taste. I can't really think of enough good things to say about this board. If you have a lasting interest in chess, buy this. You will not regret it. The only decision is what size to get. Mine is a 'Grandmaster' model, the one with 2.25" squares for tournament size chessmen. (I don't think Amazon.com carries that model, but their smaller ones are every bit as nice) A wise man once said: "Buy once, cry once. Buy cheap, buy twice."

Magnetic Wooden Travel Chess Set w/ Chess Board & Storage Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The chess set came promptly, but a piece of the black Queen was broken. Kind of annoying, but not a humongous concern. If you're nit-picky about stuff like that, though, I would be wary of buying this product. And in the end, a plastic chess set from Target works just as well.

Gatogi Library Collection Chess Game Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The pieces and board are slightly smaller than I expected, but not impractically so. (But if you have little kids, the pieces are are definitely swallow size.) Though the set looks delicate, it seems quite well-made and I expect it will hold up as long as no one steps on it - but that would ruin most chess pieces regardless of size, I suppose. I would say its probably a good set for kids 10+. However, my boyfriend and I are both 21 and neither of us feel silly playing with this set so I wouldn't worry about it being too kiddish for anyone.
This set is a solid step up from a toy, but obviously not something you would get for a serious chess player. I like the book box, it makes for easy storage, but the pieces come in little zip-lock bags and the black velvet-looking tray that comes in the box is just plastic and kind of dumb. I don't know why, but I sort of expected little form-fitting pockets inside the box for each piece. It doesn't really matter, though, I just made fancier bags for the pieces and we took the tray out to make a regular box. It was never a really big deal, but I'm still much happier now.
I don't want to go to OCD on you, but the box color is a little more red then the "black" chess board squares, and the "white" and "black" pieces are all slightly darker than the respectively colored squares. It makes them easier to see so its no biggie, but I thought I'd point it out since color was such a deciding factor for me when I bought this set. (I was ecstatic to find this set, because so few sets have brown "black" squares AND brown "black" pieces. Usually its brown "black" squares and BLACK "black" pieces. I know I sound like a freak, but its much pleasanter to play on a board where the color scheme makes sense.) Ok, I went pretty OCD. Sorry about that...
Anyway, if only I could win a game, I'd be perfectly happy.

Folding 16" wooden chess set with handle and storage Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This chess set arrived today as a Christmas Present for my son and I am too embarrassed to give it to him even an 11 year old will know it is just junk! The striped wood on one side of the folding board is made out of an entirely different kind of wood than the wood on the other side. So it looks like it was put together in two different factories in China, like one hand didn't know what the other hand was doing. Mis-matched. I mean it looks really weird, not just a little bit off.
Also, this board is advertised as 16 inches, which is misleading. The playing surface itself is only 12 inches and the pieces are extremely small as you would expect for a 12 inch set. But I thought I was paying up for a 16 inch set with bigger pieces. Sure, the exterior case & handle measures 16, but the playing surface is 12.
OK so for 20 dollars it is cheap so expectations are so low that it is OK it is junk?
No, was not expecting something actually going in the scrap heap! Don't buy!

Folding 12" Inlaid Wood chess set with storage Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased this chess set as a gift. I chose this over others due to price, materials (wood pieces and board), and portability.
When I received my package, it was packaged quite well, although I know how rough some postage handling can be. I mention this as there was a significant nick in one corner. It could have been (and probably was) due to mail delivery.
However, I am unsatisfied mainly with the design and durability of the chess set itself. I liked the idea of having the pieces held down inside of the set, without any of them rolling around. It is too bad that when all the pieces were placed within the elastic band, the band snapped or came undone on one side. Now the whole row doesn't sit well, with one piece rolling around within. Worse yet, when the larger pieces (such as queens or kings) are placed on opposite sides within the storage area of the set, the set does not completely close. This can be circumvented by arranging them without large pieces meeting each other on the other side. A minor disadvantage but still notable.
It is interesting that my set was ordered "new" but came without shrink wrap or any sort of seal. Maybe I was sent a return or a factory second, but either way I wouldn't really know without purchasing and comparing another set. Due to the unavoidable flawed storage design, that seems highly unlikely.
With that said, the set itself is nice. You get what you pay for, however it is disappointing to have this one with a broken band, when we haven't even used it yet. However, it is certainly possible I was shipped a model that someone had returned, so take this review with a grain of salt.

Travel Magnetic Walnut Chess Set Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The pieces have such weak magnets that they move around easily on the board and/or fall over. I was expecting the magnets in the pieces would have been strong enough to hold the pieces in place--but they do not. Some of the pieces are also cracked, which in and of itself would not be a problem, but the weak magnets make the set useless as a magnetic travel chess set.
