Alex Magnetic Tabletop Easel Review

Alex Magnetic Tabletop Easel

This table-top easel is great because we have a small apt. It currently sits on a small play table and when our toddler paints we move it to our dining room table so she has more space. When the paints are not in use, our 3 yr uses it to draw/story-tell. Even our 1 yr old likes to cruise by and make marks with the crayons/chalk. It is very nice quality and easy to put together. Since this easel is easy to assemble/disassemble, you need to re-tighten the side knobs occasionally. I like that if we want to store away, it won't take up a ton of space. It would make a great toddler gift.

Battleship Review

Battleship

As a GenX, I grew up with Battleship and Electronic Battleship (cooler). Its a great game for young kids. 5 or 6 is about as young as you want to go on age. The kids have to learn both grid notation and also the transformation that their attack grid is an analog to my defense grip/ship grid and vice versa. It takes kids a little while to grasp this concept fully. The game is suspenseful and fun for kids.
The drawback with this version of Battleship is pretty common to a lot of products. The manufacturer has done a lot of cost reduction to the game since you saw the version you played on as a kid. There is a lightweight and cheap feel to it now. One example is the white/red pegs. They used to be large, about 2cm and solid. Now they are about 1/2 cm and hollow to save on plastic cost. Just one example, but you get the idea, everything about it has been spared down to the minimal possible costs. They even have the user apply the outside Battleship decal stickers to save on a few pennies of assembly cost. This sort of makes sense. They are selling the game based on nostalgia we all have for it that we want to pass on to our kids. This games sales driver is not word of mouth on high build quality or durability. Therefore, charge as much as possible and cut costs at every conceivable location. To this I would say to the manufacturer, shame on you guys.
A better bet would be to find an older battleship game with better quality on eBay or go dig up your old set from your parents basement. Those sets were built so well that they should still be fine.

Ravensburger Scotland Yard - Family Game Review

Ravensburger Scotland Yard - Family Game

We bought this game to play over the holidays with a house full of guests. The game is recommended for 6 players, and it worked best with that number. I think it would be very difficult, if not almost impossible, with less players. It is a neat game because Mr. X is hidden amongst the streets of London, and the other players must work together to find him/her. Mr. X has a really tough job, and the length of the game depends on his/her ability to outwit the rest of the players. It is a unique concept, but it a refreshing change from all the other games that pit player against player, which often ends up in hard feelings.

Let?s Play! Which player will have the roll of the elusive Mister X? One player will function as Mister X, with the other players being Scotland Yard detectives searching for him throughout Central London. The starting station cards are shuffled and everyone draws one to determine where they will start the game. Every move is either by taxi, underground, or bus. Mister X moves first and writes his move in his travel log, indicating what method of transportation he used but not where he moved. Then, each detective makes their move, cooperating with the other detectives in an effort to close in on Mister X. Mister X only reveals where he is at certain points in the game, and the chase continues until one of the detectives moves to the place where Mister X is. In this case, the team of detectives has won the game. But, if Mister X makes 24 moves without being caught, he himself wins!
2-6 Players. Playing Time 40 minutes.
