I bought this for my 9 year old son and he loves it. Yes, the numbers are clear, but all you need to do is count rows and spaces and you get very fast at it. The sound effects are cool. My son has had no frustration with this game and I am glad we bought it. You know your child loves something when he wants to play every night.

Electronic Battleship: Star Wars Review

I bought this game for my 6 year old, and was very sorry I spent sooo much money on it! When I buy an electronic version of an established game or toy, I expect it to do some of the work for me. Is that asking too much? But in Star Wars Battleship, the two players have to punch buttons to enter each ship on their side. It takes a looonnnngggg time to set up the game before you can every play. Even in the "Classic" game mode. Then, you just spend your whole time entering coordinates. It takes much longer than the old basic Battleship to play. The only thing that is fun about this version is the voices and the hits that
you make.
My son could do this game after some coaching on how to enter coordinates, but the players still have to keep track of their hits and misses with little red and white pegs. The game does none of the work and tedious stuff for you! The only electronic part of the game are the voices and sound effects. I suppose you could play this game a lot faster by just not turning it on and playing it like the classic board game.
If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan, you will buy this game no matter what I say. In my opinion, though, it is just not worth the money. Especially when a parent sees how much work and hassle the whole game is. We've had more fun over the holidays playing with the basic board game "Trouble" that cost $10.
I would return the game if I could, but the stickers are in place, and the baggies are emptied. Tough luck for me, but maybe I can help someone else avoid the high sticker price, and the hassle.

Battleship Board Game 1990 Edition Review

Battleship Board Game 1990 Edition

In production by Milton Bradley Company since 1931, "Battleship" is another board game with a military theme and one of the greatest ever created. It is, simply, the very best of its kind. You don't surpass this kind of simple genius, only match it if you can.
Many, many different editions and versions of "Battleship" have been made over the years, and many more have been made since this one. But 1990 will always be a special year for me in any field, whether it is the year of a car, book, or board game's production or anything else. This 1990 edition of the classic naval combat strategy came is the first version of "Battleship" that I ever played, and remains my favorite. The boards themselves are square and black, the arrangement of everything inside and out is straightforward and, in my mind, military. Both the upper and lower peg-hole boards are made of a clear blue plastic, that together with the blue paper set below them is meant to create the illusion of the grey miniature ships actually being on the ocean. Some newer editions have tried doing this with grey plastic that is part of the board, shaped somewhat like waves. Sure, those peg-hole boards don't fall off, but I kind of liked that aspect of the 1990 edition. The bloody boards could fall off if you weren't careful, and I noticed my set tended to do that a tad more as they grew older.
Among my favorite board games, this one is second only to "Risk". No collection of board games could ever be said to be complete without it.

My kids seem to be having fun with this game. There is quite a bit of putting together to do out of the box though. You wont be pulling it out and playing. Just a heads up, I got this at Wal Mart for $19.99.

What a great classic military strategy game. This game, well over 100 years old once played with paper and pencil, is sure to become a favorite among younger and older players. It is a great game for young and old to develop critical military and cognitive skills. For the most challenging game, why not play the advanced salvo game mode in which the player only knows how many "hits" without the knowledge of their exact location and what vessel types? The vendor delivers the game with lightning fast delivery and in excellent condition. I highly recommend this classic game and vendor to all....Battleship Battle Ship Nick in New Jersey

As a GenX, I grew up with Battleship and Electronic Battleship (cooler). Its a great game for young kids. 5 or 6 is about as young as you want to go on age. The kids have to learn both grid notation and also the transformation that their attack grid is an analog to my defense grip/ship grid and vice versa. It takes kids a little while to grasp this concept fully. The game is suspenseful and fun for kids.
The drawback with this version of Battleship is pretty common to a lot of products. The manufacturer has done a lot of cost reduction to the game since you saw the version you played on as a kid. There is a lightweight and cheap feel to it now. One example is the white/red pegs. They used to be large, about 2cm and solid. Now they are about 1/2 cm and hollow to save on plastic cost. Just one example, but you get the idea, everything about it has been spared down to the minimal possible costs. They even have the user apply the outside Battleship decal stickers to save on a few pennies of assembly cost. This sort of makes sense. They are selling the game based on nostalgia we all have for it that we want to pass on to our kids. This games sales driver is not word of mouth on high build quality or durability. Therefore, charge as much as possible and cut costs at every conceivable location. To this I would say to the manufacturer, shame on you guys.
A better bet would be to find an older battleship game with better quality on eBay or go dig up your old set from your parents basement. Those sets were built so well that they should still be fine.

I used several sets of these for a logic class for kids this past week. It works for the most part, but even if you are careful, some of the pegs are going to fall out of the upper board as you play. The tops will snap off if you wiggle them too much, though you can get them to go back on. In addition, if you have to insert a peg between several other pegs, there isn't very much room to maneuver. Finally, the letters and numbers marking the grid are a little hard to make out if the lighting or your eyes aren't good.
In a pinch these work, but they aren't great.

Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission Review

Electronic Battleship Advanced Mission

I sure expected a lot more out of this game based on its price. Essentially the only thing electronic about this is the preprogrammed games and the cheesy, repetitive sound effects. Okay, a little red light flashes if you hit a boat, but so what? For the money, Hasbro should have: 1) At the very least printed out the punched in letter/number combo on the light grid. Ever play this with a kid who forgets to call out the coordinates then forgets what they were altogether! Frustrating! Putting this on the display probably would have cost pennies. 2) Had LEDs in the grid. Want those plastic pegs? Get the much cheaper and essentially the same, old fashioned "manual version". This doesn't do much more. I was at least expecting LEDs to light up in the grid after the coordinates were put in. Okay, nickels this time, not pennies. But nope. 3) Keep track of what's sunk. Hey, they have a little key with the boats on it - how tough could it be to put a little lit up LED next to each when it's sunk? They don't even have the peg holes up top anymore to mark your sinkings! How lame is THAT?
In this day and age of high tech computer wizardry, this game MISSES THE BOAT! It should be quick and inexpensive to put in what is really missing, especially for the price. Instead, Hasbro gives you something not much better than the classic....at 3X the $$.
If this weren't a kid's gift I would have returned the one I bought. Save your money and stick with the classic. Don't say you weren't warned!

Pretty good. Bought it to travel with and tested it out at home. I hesitate to travel with it since it seems like if you bumped it you would lose pegs everywhere. Still, the purpose of this toys is to be small and travel sized. I would recommend this toy for older (+12) children or adults.
