Hooked on Phonics: Discover Reading - Toddler Edition Review

Hooked on Phonics: Discover Reading - Toddler Edition
Average Reviews:

If you're an engaged parent that already reads to your child then this product isn't going to help you. It comes with a few books, some flashcards, and a CD of music. There is no phonics learning in this kit.
My 2.5 year old already has a few hundred books, we already read to her twice a day, and we do active reading by asking her questions about the book and the pictures. That's the extent of what the parents guide is going to tell you.
Save your money, buy some board books, and wait until your child is ready for one of the older kits that actually has some phonics learning in it.

Shure - Wooden Alphabet Flash Cards Review

I ordered these for my 17 month old daughter, who was starting to display an interest in learning her alphabet and we both had gasps of delight in opening them. They are GORGEOUS in person and made of a really nice, lightweight, but durable material. I love how it includes both upper case, lower case, and a picture of a word starting with each letter. Only complaint, maybe a better case for the cards themselves, the case it comes in is a little clumsy.

Purchased this for a 5 year old who is beginning to read and spell...great item, especially for kids with some imagination/creativity...child (with some initial help) quickly realized that if you simply start with a consonant and then a vowel, suddenly lots of three and four letter words start appearing...child enjoyed rearranging rings to spell lots of different words.

Word builder challenges children to build new words by twisting the rings in order to create different letter combinations. With the help of their caregivers, children learn how to use consonants and vowels to build words between two and six letters long. Alpha Animals Alphabet Board Game Review

Alpha Animals Alphabet Board Game

This is a great educational game! The first couple times my 5 yr-old grandaughter and I played, we used the directions for 4-6 yr olds, where you name an animal whose name begins with a, then b, etc, as you advance around the playing board. Soon she was playing at the more advanced, challenging level, where you must name an animal that starts with a and flies, or starts with a and swims, etc. It's great fun for her when grandma can't think of an answer, and she can!! My grandaughter has become so interested in animals, I bought her an encylopedia all about animals, that we use when playing the game. I would recommend this game for anyone who cares about animals.

I've always believed that Wheel of Fortune was the best game show on television. It's so addicting to tune in every night at 7:30 pm and watch people solve puzzles and win money.

Measuring Marathon Game Review

Measuring Marathon Game
Average Reviews:

Race to the finish. This game is fun because it is fairly short. In homeschooling it is good to have lots of educational games on hand. The short ones are better because the children don't lose concentration and they do learn something.
Description:
You move your playing piece forward by answereing multiple choice questions on your turn. eg. How long is a foot? a. 12 inches b. 18 inches c. 6 inches
If you answer correctly you move your piece forward until somebody reaches the finish line.
Great educational game for about grades 2 to 4. Some of the questions will be a bit tricky for grade 2 and most would be easy for grade 4.

My kids ages 5-14 have had a great time playing this together. Not very many games can you play with such a wide variety of ages. It is a little simplistic for the adults but we help out the youngest when she needs it. I was surprised how many answers she could handle on her own though.

Buzz Word Junior is the game that fuzzes your memory and buzzes your brain. It's designed with younger players in mind. Just like in the award-winning Buzz Word game, you and your teammates have 45 seconds to solve a set of clues, and all the answers contain the buzz word. Let's say the buzz word is "see" and the clue is "teeter-totter." Your teammates shout "seesaw," and you buzz the buzzer. For 4 or more players.

My kids are in grade 2 and grade 4, and they are having a lot of fun with this game. An added benefit is that it works great as a travel/car game. I would actually like to see a few more letters on each side of the board, but it's fine as is for a good challenge. The kids are learning letter combinations and new words, so it's fun and educational. I would recommend it for kids from grade 1-grade 5.

Learning Resources Hidden Hints - Context Clues Reading Comprehension Game

Our kids range in age from 5-10 and they are all able to play this. Our 5 year can read so that is probably why they are all able to play this together. Otherwise, I think the lowest age range would be 7. We like this game mainly because it focuses on a weak area for 2 of our boys - language & reading comprehension. One of our children has autism and struggles with testing. This game mimics standardized testing which was a big plus for me. Our kids all play this like a fun game while I treat it like homework in disguise. Clever.

Tales of the Arabian Nights Review

Tales of the Arabian Nights
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tales of the Arabian Nights is a fantastic board game for you and 5 of your friends. While the player pieces may feature classic Arabian Nights characters like Aladin and Sinbad, these pieces are merely place holders for a story of your own. The story is created by players taking turns having a series of encounters as they travel the world. Each encounter is in the form of a card which will direct you to a chart in "The book of stories." From this chart you will discover what you have encountered, whether it be an Enchanted Hag or a Bumbling Efreet. Then the player is given a series of choices as to how they wish to interact with the encounter. For example, if you encountered the Enchanted Hag you could choose to: question her, attack her, aid her, seek aid from her, hire her, or court her. Which ever choice you pick directs the player to a paragraph in "The book of stories" which tells the players what happens.
Keeping true to the theme of Arabian Nights, someone has to eventually win by returning to Baghdad to become the Sultan.
The Book of Stories is the most important piece to this game. It includes 2600 paragraphs of adventures making it unlikely you will experience the same story twice.
Who might like this sort of game?
This is a game appreciated by people 13 to 113. Children 12 and under will love this game but struggle with some of the language and with locating paragraphs in "The Book of Stories." This is an excellent game to introduce to your wife or significant other if they do not play many board games. Especially if they have any interest in, for lack of a better term, "ancient" Middle Eastern history, culture, and literature.
The biggest problem with this game is the initial parameters can lead to a 3+ hour experience but the rules include ways you can distill your trip through the world of Arabian Nights down to an hour or less.
I am not an employee of Z-Man games, nor have I been compensated to do this review. I am a gaming Nerd and proud to represent my culture anywhere it is found in the tubes. If you have any other questions about this product, post and I will certainly try to reply.
Best wishes and Happy Gaming,
Matt Aksamit
