(More customer reviews)Tales of the Arabian Nights is a fantastic board game for you and 5 of your friends. While the player pieces may feature classic Arabian Nights characters like Aladin and Sinbad, these pieces are merely place holders for a story of your own. The story is created by players taking turns having a series of encounters as they travel the world. Each encounter is in the form of a card which will direct you to a chart in "The book of stories." From this chart you will discover what you have encountered, whether it be an Enchanted Hag or a Bumbling Efreet. Then the player is given a series of choices as to how they wish to interact with the encounter. For example, if you encountered the Enchanted Hag you could choose to: question her, attack her, aid her, seek aid from her, hire her, or court her. Which ever choice you pick directs the player to a paragraph in "The book of stories" which tells the players what happens.
Keeping true to the theme of Arabian Nights, someone has to eventually win by returning to Baghdad to become the Sultan.
The Book of Stories is the most important piece to this game. It includes 2600 paragraphs of adventures making it unlikely you will experience the same story twice.
Who might like this sort of game?
This is a game appreciated by people 13 to 113. Children 12 and under will love this game but struggle with some of the language and with locating paragraphs in "The Book of Stories." This is an excellent game to introduce to your wife or significant other if they do not play many board games. Especially if they have any interest in, for lack of a better term, "ancient" Middle Eastern history, culture, and literature.
The biggest problem with this game is the initial parameters can lead to a 3+ hour experience but the rules include ways you can distill your trip through the world of Arabian Nights down to an hour or less.
I am not an employee of Z-Man games, nor have I been compensated to do this review. I am a gaming Nerd and proud to represent my culture anywhere it is found in the tubes. If you have any other questions about this product, post and I will certainly try to reply.
