Britannia Review

Britannia

BRITANNIA is, indeed, a difficult game to play. But that does not mean the experience will not be a pleasant one.
The dificulty arises from the fact that there are a lot of exceptions and foot notes to the rules of the game. These exceptions were clearley designed to portray history in a more accurate way and add to the flavour of the game. It works, but as a collateral effect I'd say it's almost impossible to play BRITTANIA, at least the first two or three times, without making totally inadvertent rules errors while playing.
The game was really designed with four players in mind, with three or five player it gets clearly unbalanced.Maybe it was pressure form the publisher to try to sell to a broader audience, I don't know. Anyway, this ia a personal opinion, maybe people playing with other number thatn four players will find it efficient also.
It's indeed a time consuming game. Rarely it ends before fours hours playing.
The game components are totally adequate, nothing fancy, but fundamentally operational. Game board very beautiful. Rule book is well designed and with good examples.
This is a war game through and through, but with clever and fast combat resolution mechanics (based in D6 dice) and without thousands of complicated playing pieces that keep stacking upon each other in a hexagonal board. Of course, since there are dice involved, luck plays a big part, and a whole carefully planned strategy may be destroyed by a sequence of two or three bad luck dice rolling. But you can easily regain it by good dice rolling when defending... What I say is: with a lot of battles solely resolved by dice rolling, no matter how good a strategist or historian you are, luck is a strong factor in BRITANNIA.
In general, it's no wonder it's one of the few out of print Avalon Hill games that managed to get new life with another publisher. It's exciting, gorgeous to look at and informative.

Warhammer 40,000 Review

Warhammer 40,000
Average Reviews:

Warhammer 40,000 is the best sci-fi table top miniature game on the market. The game comes with outstanding plastic miniatures that are fun to assemble and paint. The rules are easy to learn and yet challenging enough to play over and over again. I have been playing this game for nearly ten years and still enjoy playing it as often as possible.
Playing the actual game is only a part of the bigger Games Workshop hobby. This hobby not only involves the actual tactical game play, but can also exercise a player's creativity in modeling miniatures, painting, and story writing as they develop the armies they use on their table top battlefield.
All around, this is a great game and wonderful hobby. It will stimulate and excite you to stretch your imagination and become part of an excellent sci-fi universe.

Tau Empire Battleforce Warhammer 40k Review

Tau Empire Battleforce Warhammer 40k

This is a great way to start creating a Tau army for warhammer 40k. It has one Tau Crisis XV8 Battlesuit, one Devilfish APC, three Tau XV25 Stealth Suits, one Markerlight Drone, six Gun Drones, twelve Tau Fire Warriors, and twelve Kroot Carnivores. Assembly is definitely required so have glue, and paints at hand. Just keep in mind this is a basic army. It will be torn apart by heavy units so adding more crisis suits, broadsides, a hammer head (or 2), or Vespid squad is highly advised. If you prefer a heavier army with no kroot you might want to look at the Megaforce instead.

This game is major fun. A buddy of mine and me played this game from 8pm till 2am. I saw the Ad for it on cartoon Network, and thought, hey this looks like Games Workshops Blood Bowl, And I always wanted to play that. This Game cost less than 15.00 bucks when I bought it, better than the 50 dollar blood bowl title. Have No idea if the games are related, but if you like football, tactical stratagy, and mass carnage with cyberpunk overtones get this game. If you know any one who likes just one of these things get this as a gift. This game is simple to learn. Instuctions are 6-8 page pamphlet you can read in 5 min easy. The game will keep you enthralled for hours. Hoping for expansion teams, me and pals have tounaments starting up this week. Last thing, the manufacturer says this game is for those 8 to about 12, most people I know or have seen playing/buying this game are ages 8-40

Warhammer 40K Assault on Black Reach Starter Set Review

Warhammer 40K Assault on Black Reach Starter Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is definitely a great set if you're a beginner in the world of Warhammer 40k like me. This box set gets you up and running immediately. It comes with over fifty miniatures, templates, and a comprehensive rule book! The price is close to that of just the hardcover rule book itself, so if you want to just check out the world of Warhammer 40k without investing too much, then this is where you need to start. This way you can really tell if you enjoy playing through the game and see if building an army is a hobby you really want to invest in. And trust me; it IS an investment after a while.
The ridiculously minor drawback is that you can only get this set with Space Marines and Orks as the two opposing forces. While I'm not so driven to play either of these armies, I can't deny the usefulness in getting acquainted with the game in this set. My friends and I have been using this set in order to learn how to play the game rather than using our main forces. The small 95 page rule book has all the rules of the game; in fact they are the same exact ones you'll find in the hardcover three hundred page book. The only difference between the two is that the hardcover book gives you a lot more background information about the different armies and some good painting tips.
One of the other major benefits to this starter kit is how easy it is to put together. The models are designed to snap fit together, which is great for beginners. I've put together some decently complex models, like the tanks and the Forge-World miniatures, and by comparison the "Assault on Black Reach" set is a walk in the park. It put together very simply for me and I didn't even have to do much touch up work. There was nothing I had to seal with epoxy due to gaps and so forth. You can put together the entire force in a few hours or if you're in a rush to play you can probably put an entire unit together in less than an hour. The only touch ups I really took time to deal with was gluing on a few arms here and there, especially with the Ork army. I found their arms were a little loose a lot of times and tended to fall off.
If you're very interested in painting your newly built army then I actually don't recommend you pick up the "Assault on Black Reach" paint set. It's now out of print, but I managed to track it down. It only gives you enough paint and the colors for the Space Marine units. It doesn't give you anything for the Ork army and it only comes with instructions on how to paint the Space Marines, so if you want to paint that really cool Terminator figure, you're on your own. The upside is the paint set does come with five more Space Marine's so you can increase the size of your force a little more.
If you really want to delve into the world of painting then I recommend you look into the "Battle for MacCragge" hobby set. I don't own this product yet, but it does appear to come with enough paint for the full force in that set. The only downside is it's Space Marines versus the Tyranids, so if you really liked the Orks and wanted to learn how to paint them the same way, then you're out of luck for these starter sets. It works a bit more for me because I want to play as the Tyranids.
Overall I think this is a great beginner product. The only way I think they can improve it is give it more of a story oriented background and involve the new players in the universe a little more. I was kind of half expecting that based on the title of this box set. Maybe I'm too used to other forms of boxed modules. Anyway, if you want to get into this incredibly engrossing hobby, then I highly recommend this set.

Space Marines Dreadnought Box Warhammer 40K Review

Space Marines Dreadnought Box Warhammer 40K
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Another excellent improvement to a classic model kit! In 1987, Games Workshop released Warhammer 40K (40,000) and along with it a line of war-gaming miniatures that have in recent years evolved in design and execution to become a modular set of great war-gaming model miniatures. The Space Marine Dreadnought is a result of this process. In game terms they are powerful mechanical soldiers controlled by the spirits of mortally wounded warrior heroes who are buried within their armored shells. They are a prominent combat piece to any Space Marine Army and demand attention on the battlefield. In terms of modeling, the Space Marine Dreadnought is a relatively simple model to construct, but its modular weapons and replaceable accessories give the completed model great customizability.

Ork Killa Kans (3) 2010 Version Warhammer 40,000 Games Workshop Review

Ork Killa Kans (3) 2010 Version Warhammer 40,000 Games Workshop
Average Reviews:

Every ork player should have at least 3 of these guys. They are the main shooters of your ork force, as they each have a BS of 3! (Grotz are inside, not orks!). As such you usually fit these guys with rokkit's, or Mega blasters, to provide some much needed anti tank.
Ton's of little individualized parts to make each kan unique, even if you already have a set of 3, or even 6. Also very easy to magnetize or pin! (Which is highly recommended for swapping weapons!). If you want more of a particular arm, hit up ebay to get more grotzooka's, rokkit's, etc. Or just make your own!

Warhammer 40,000 Paint Set - Games Workshop Miniatures - WH40K Review

Warhammer 40,000 Paint Set - Games Workshop Miniatures - WH40K
Average Reviews:

This is a great starter kit for all new or returning Warhammer fans! The paints are excellent quality and it is a great deal provided that these paints bought individually are $3.70 retail. They will paint the Ultramarine theme no problem and come with a set of tester figurines to work with.
More experienced players be forewarned however. The figurines that come with the set are the cheapest quality Warhammer things and are of glueless construction (no customizability here folks!). Also, if you use primer with acetone (the standard Warhammer one has acetone which eats cheaper quality plastic) it WILL gum up these figurines. The undercoat black pot solves this, but these models are not meant to be done further than average quality builds.
Will definitely buy again for the paint value though as these are my standard paint theme!

This product is for my 10 year old son. He loves it and it is a perfect fit. The paint seals well to prevent drying while stored. Death Angel Review

Death Angel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original Space Hulk is a fairly complex board game; it plays on a large surface utilizing myriads of figures, dices, and a ton of other accessories. Death Angel, on the other hand, tries to deliver the core experience of the board game in a faster, easier-to-follow, cooperative card game format. Players simulate the events on the space hulk using only cards, a limited number of tokens, and a single dice. They do that by moving a column of space marines through randomized locations and events (all represented by cards) while fighting off swarms of genestealers. Fights are resolved by the dice, and the game is over when the marines either fulfilled their mission presented on the last location card, killed all genestealers, or all died. Simple enough; the random nature of the game and the large number of cards, however, allow players to experience different scenarios from game to game--well, in theory, but I will get to this later.
One thing I especially like about Death Angel is that it can be played alone. People do not always have friends available for playing; so it is advantageous that Death Angel has this option. The mechanics of the game remain the same during solo play; the player simply assumes the role of other players, controlling more than one space marine squad. While this does not change the gameplay drastically, it does give the player more freedom to come up with different strategies trying to tackle the genestealer attacks. Solo play, therefore, is an integral part of the game, just as fun--if not more--than playing with friends.
While I believe Death Angel successfully captures the essence of the original Space Hulk in a creative and engaging card game, unfortunately, it does suffer from some minor flaws. For instance, despite their bulky armor, space marines fall prey to the alien swarm much too fast. In a 4+ cooperative game where each player only commands one squad (two space marines), this becomes especially problematic, often resulting in an untimely death and rendering the dropped out player a mere spectator while the others play. Although on a somewhat lesser degree, but difficulty also affects games with fewer players (controlling more squads) and even solo play. After more than five tries, I have yet to win a single game!
Another, and perhaps a bit more serious, although not at all uncorrectable, issue I have with Death Angel is its core mechanic. The game puts almost all emphasis on fighting, meaning that other aspects, such as exploration or problem solving, do not live up to their full potential, if at all. This not only hurts replay value but also renders the game one dimensional--although, for fairness sake, I have to point out that it delivers the mechanics of fighting exceptionally well. The good news, however, is that this issue can easily be corrected with an expansion pack, with which this game is clearly destined to wind up. New cards providing more diverse terrain (something that Death Angel desperately needs, as currently it has only 8 of these cards, 4 of which rarely come up), new locations, more mission objectives and events putting a bit more emphasis on exploration and a bit less on fighting could really spice this game up.
Despite my many complaints, however, I had a great time with Death Angel. It delivers a solid game experience (in solo or with friends) while successfully captures the gloomy atmosphere of the original Space Hulk. The game has a fair amount of replay value, which hopefully future expansions will further improve, is complex enough to capture the more hardcore crowd while not too complex to intimidate casual players, and only costs $25. These are qualities hard to come by these days. So, if you like board or card games, the Warhammer 40k universe, and/or science fiction, I would highly recommend you picking up Space Hulk: Death Angel.

Space Hulk Board Game Review

Space Hulk Board Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a limited release of a classic boardgame intended for "core" fans of the genre. If you really want a copy you might want to get it now, because there is no telling if there will be a reprinting anytime soon. The "Space Hulk" itself is a massive derilict ship drifting thru space that serves as the setting for the game.
The pics above show assembled and painted minis. The game itself comes unassembled and unpainted. That is part of the hobby for "Games Workshop" fans. It is a heck of a lot of work to get minis to look that nice, but that's part of what makes it worth it for enthusiasts. Everything about this product is very high quality... the rules and scenarios are very well done, the map tiles and tokens are very heavy duty and once assembled, the minis are fantastic.
The game itself is a blast! A fast and brutal 2 player tactical exercise that is complete and devious. One player controls a band of Space Marines attempting to accomplish a mission. The Marines are well armed, but what they start with is what they get. The second player controls hordes of viscious aliens whose sole purpose is to kill the Marines. Each turn more and more aliens swarm into the game making it harder and harder for the Marines. In other words, Player "A" has to do something and Player "B" has to stop him. Space Hulk is about as cutthroat as it gets.
The rules are a model of efficiency and the theme and backstories are very interesting. It's actually fun to read the rulebooks. Space Hulk started out costing $99 but now is creeping up to $149. If there isn't a second release the price will keep going up. That's too bad, because mechanically this game is great. It would be fun and well worth playing with cheaper pieces and components if that is what it would take for further releases of the game.

Chaos in the Old World Review

Chaos in the Old World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game will ruin your game collection. All your other games will gather dust because Chaos in the Old World (COW) will be the only game that 3-4 people will beg to play.
COW is a game that has beautiful parity with diverse options to victory. Each player plays an evil god bent on destroying the world. The rules are simple. You summon creatures, play chaos cards, fight by rolling dice, then calculate points. Whoever has the most points wins.
How's that fun?
COW's master stroke is that each god adds its own flavor for playing the game. For instance, if you play Khorne, you are the blood god and relish the chance to attack other players much as you can. You get chaos cards that aid your bloodlust. By killing figures, Khorne also gains upgraded abilities through the game. Other players tend to flee from his reign of terror. The three other gods, Tzeentch, Nurgle, and Slaanesh, are much more subtle. For instance, each respective god can teleport, overwhelm, or control other players' figures. No god will ever play the same as the other 3. By playing as your god should, you stand an excellent chance to win.
Never does COW feel like playing solitaire. Each player is constantly watching the moves of the others and whispering to their fellow players in the hopes of creating fleeting alliances. The tension built during the game is astonishing as games are won typically by thin margins.
Chaos in the Old World's tension, variation, art, theme, and balance will have you and your friends lusting for more plays than other games. I cannot recommend COW highly enough.

In the Warhammer world, four Gods of Chaos battle for supremacy. Khorne, the Blood God, the Skulltaker, lusts for death and battle. Nurgle, the Plaguelord, the Father of Corruption, luxuriates in filth and disease.Tzeentch, the Changer of Ways, the Great Conspirator, plots the fate of the universe. Slaanesh, the Prince of Pleasure and Pain, the Lord of Temptations, lures even the most steadfast to his six deadly seductions. In the Chaos in the Old World board game, 3-4 players take on the roles of the malevolent Lords of Chaos. Each god's distinctive powers and legion of followers give the controlling player unique strengths and heretical abilities with which to corrupt and enslave the Old World.
