Uncle Milton Uncle Milton Dino Xcavator Review

I bought this game for my nephew's 6th birthday and he loves it. One of the things I really liked about the game was that it included dinosaur trivia, and my nephew really liked that too. Of course he loves it when the dinosaur "ghost" roars, so the pieces that were harder to remove did not frustrate him. Being that he has a younger brother (2) we immediately made a rule that the bones need to be put back in that game before it is put away, this not only prevented little fingers from picking up stray pieces to eat but has also helped to keep any the parts from getting lost.

Smithsonian Dig That Dinosaur Game Review

This is a nice game that is easy for young ones to play - no dice or counters - just simple memory game and matching. And that's why I rated it at 4 stars instead of 5 - it's just a bit too simple.
The game play is simple: You have one set of cards ('middle layer') with dinosaur bone pieces on them - these fit together to assemble 1 of four dinosaurs. You place those face down and then put a 'top layer' larger card on top of each of the them. The top layer cards have little notches in them so you can use the 'excavator tool' to life up the top layer and then secretly peek at a middle layer card. If the piece is for your dinosaur, you take that middle layer. If it is someone else's dinosaur part, you put it back. You keep going until someone assembles their dinosaur (about 6 cards per dinosaur). There are ruby cards (let you take an extra turn) and snake cards (you flip up an extra top layer and whosoever dinosaur part it is, you give to them). The way this works, it is much more fun with 3-4 players than it is with just 2. With only two players, if someone flips up a middle layer card and it's not theirs, they put it back and that's an obvious tip off to the other player that the piece is for their dinosaur. Which makes it kind of unchallenging.
I guess the easy way to describe this is that it is similar to a preschool memory game but changed to resemble a dinosaur bone hunt. Game play takes about 20 minutes or so and there are a LOT of pieces since there are the larger 'top layer' cards and then the smaller 'middle layer' cards. If you lose a card, it severely affects the game so you need to be very careful with this.
For educational purposes, the back side of the 'top layer' cards all have dinosaur facts. But with only 30 of those cards, those facts get exhausted pretty soon. And with only 4 dinosaurs to get the bone pieces of, there's not a lot of depth of play or learning. Each of the dinosaur piece cards is lined by a color, making it easy for kids of all ages to know immediately whether the card goes with their dinosaur.
In all, a nice game but definitely for the very young dino lover.

Dinosaurs Extinct? Review

Dinosaurs Extinct

My son is dinosaur obsessed. He received this game for his fifth birthday and as we approach his sixth birthday he loves it as much now as he did when we first got it. He could play it for hours on end.
As for the game itself, it is a basic board game consisting of the board, dinosaur game pieces, a die, number cards, and cards with pictures that have overlays divided into three. As you lift the overlay you can see the dinosaur bones.
The way the game works is that each player chooses a game piece and then a picture card that matches with your game piece. Players roll a die to advance. The games gets interesting when two players land on the same space. Then you each draw a card and whoever get the larger number wins and keeps their spot, the other person must go back the number of spaces shown on their card and expose a set of bones on their picture card. If a player lands on a "no more bones" space then they can cover back up the bones that are exposed. There are some more intricacies to the game but you get the basic picture.
I found this game to be a very successful variation on your typical board game. It has become my go to gift for five and six year boy birthday gifts.

T Rex Battle Board Game Review

T Rex Battle Board Game

My ds5 loves dinosaurs and my ds8 loves games, thus the purchase. The plastic game board and pieces really are quite cute and durable. But the game itself is just okay, IMO. When we played it I was kinda tired, but I felt the rules were a little complicated. For a 5 yr old to roll 4 dice and figure out where to move his 3 "team mates" PLUS the T-Rex PER TURN will take some getting used to. However, there is a simplified version and I kinda made up some of my own rules too, so that made it passable. We all liked the dinosaurs "battling" when you landed on an occupied space, but then it took too long to roll a six to get out of the "T-Rex den" you were sent to if you lost the "battle". And the T-Rex chasing everyone around the board, while cute in theory, didn't work so well when we played. Overall, my ds8 liked it, but I don't think he's met a board game yet he wouldn't play again. My ds5, whom I really bought the game for has not asked to play with it again. So I think that says something. Since we paid good money for it, I think we will play again, just to see if we like it better over time. And it does involve some strategy and thinking skills, of which kids always have room for developing.
