This game is very similar to the "25,000 Pyramid" game show of the 70s and 80s, only here there are five subjects on each card and there's no given category for the five things listed (the TV show had seven things and categories). The five things on each card are just strung together randomly. An example of five things listed would be:
Popcorn
Jerry Springer
The Eiffel Tower
Steak
Miss America
You have 30 seconds to describe the five things listed on the card to your partner. Like the Pyramid TV show, you can't say part of the answer or a word that contains the form of an answer in your descriptions. So if the word is "magician" you can't say "He does magic tricks." You also can't say "it rhymes with" or "it sounds like." You move one space on the board for each right answer. There's also a special die that you roll when your turn is done. The number that you roll determines the amount of additional spaces you move, either one, two or zero.
Players alternate giving and guessing clues as two-player teams. The first team to reach the finish line wins. The cards are double sided and come in two stacks, yellow and blue, so you'll play this game a lot before you start repeating. The cards cover a great deal of subjects, both past and present as well as sports, history, science and geography. So it's not just pop culture, but that's in there too.
So if you like the Pyramid show like I do, you'll probably like this game. But beware, it's not as easy as it looks or sounds. I played this game with my Wednesday night gaming group and I don't think anyone got all five answers on their card. We all have memory lapses and draw blanks on things we all know in the back of our minds. This game will make you do that, probably more than once. But 30 Seconds is a good challenging game.
