(More customer reviews)If you're like me, you got introduced to Catan by playing the 3-4 player 'basic' game. I learned the hard way, getting beat repeatedly by more experienced players who were allegedly my friends. Catan is a game both simple in its concept and yet incredibly complex and difficult to master. Learning it in the natural order of the expansion packs therefore makes a lot of sense. That's why, despite the fact that Catan and all of its expansions are fantastic, I cannot recommend this collection to anyone but a seasoned Catan veteran.
Getting every expansion from the get-go might encourage a lot of jumping from expansion to expansion without really engaging each expansion properly. Seafarers itself can provide years and years of game play without boredom setting in. Unless you've already played AT LEAST half of the expansions in this set, I would recommend starting modestly and working your way out to the newest expansion packs. Otherwise you may miss some of the finer points of Catan strategy. It could also be daunting to try to learn all of the rules for each expansion right away.
All that said, each Catan expansion is excellent, and this is a perfect set to buy if you already have played a lot of Catan, know you like it, and don't want to pull any punches. If you're addicted to Catan, this is the perfect set to buy. It will give you everything you need to play Catan basically forever.
A note: this is the new 4th generation set. I prefer the more muted graphics of the 3rd generation, but that is purely aesthetic preference.

Starfarers of Catan Review

(More customer reviews)I have loved Settlers of Catan since I first played it. I was thrilled when I first saw Starfarers (I loved the retro Flash Gordon look).
Unlike the other Settler games, this one actually uses plastic and not wood for many of the pieces/parts. My friends can be quite rowdy late at night but in the years I have had the game, no piece has ever broken.
Play is a little different than in other sets. Its sort of like Seafarers with lots of little islands. Development cards are there (although there are some new resources) and they have been joined by encounter cards where you deal with alien races, traders and pirates. Play lasts a little longer than the original but is comparable to Cities & Knights.
The board is beautiful and rather large (no small contained hex this time). Players ability to move and fight are modified by upgrades to their central ship/die roller/neat thing. There is currently an expansion set for adding up to two more players which I just picked up (so I don't know how it affects play yet).
All in all, this is a really fun addition to the Settlers world of games (I have eight of them so far). If you liked the original and wanted a bit more of a challenge, this is a great addition to your game closet.

The idea is pretty simple - harvest your resources and use them to build up your villages. Games take a half hour to an hour, with luck mattering as much as strategy.

You have to be careful, though. too much backstabbing and your wife will never play it with you again! There are multiple strategies you can use to try and win, such as being the first to start the building of the church which will inevitably destroy your opponents' (or your) buildings if they lie in it's path. Or you can concentrate on the city walls which will net you extra cards when pirates attack. or maybe you can just go for the straightforward approach and just start trying to build as much as possible and hope your opponents don't steal your building permits. The randomness is just a roll of the dice but you can manipulate the outcome of that depending on how much influence you have. I mentioned backstabbing earlier; you can use your opponent's building permits against them. This is a game where come-from-behind victories can be common if people take advantage of influence and let other players unwittingly help them build.

Settlers of Catan: 3rd Edition 5-6 Player Expansion Review

Great because it involves interaction (think Pit, with trading), randomization (the board is different every time), multiple strategies that can be used to win, and chance (getting to know how often a number set should be rolled with the dice, vs. what actually happens is quite interesting).
I also enjoy (and own) all of the major expansions. My recommendation is to buy the entire pack together (5-6 player expansions, Seafarers, and Cities and Knights) to save some money. This game provides built in balance for various levels of play, because as someone pulls ahead, everyone else can "gang-up" on them enough to surpass that person. I like to win games, but this is one where I have to be pleased simply for being close, and actually get a lot of satisfaction out of that.
Don't be afraid to make up your own boards. We've also tried "Speed" Settlers, where each person has a preset (30sec for example) time to finish their turn. (This game can take a long time if someone likes to take too long.

(More customer reviews)I have never written a negative review before, but tonight, after trying to play this game again I'm driven to write this.
I purchased this game based on a game seller's high recommendation and great description, the quality of the wooden pieces and the reputation of the Catan games, but we have been totally disappointed.
The game itself has a sweet concept, but it's boring - truly a Candyland level game just with a more eco/green bent (and easier to win) so my kids basically ignore it unless I get it out and insist they play.
My main complaint (besides the HIGH price) is that you can not play the game with small kids without knocking over the pieces (several to many many times a game). The pieces are placed around the outside and on top of a cardboard "spinner". It can be hard for adults or big kids to get their hand in to spin without knocking them over, much less an enthusiastic 3-5 year old. The pieces' "seats" (the indented area where you place the pieces) are not very deep, so even the slightest touch of a finger or slight knee on the box topples them. It's like you're involved in some kind of bad ergonomics experiment...
Save your $ and buy Hiss or Trouble and have lots more fun.

Each player has a set of buildings to place. Placing a building uses a whole wagon load of resources: 1 each of wood, bricks, and wheat. The roll of the die determines how far the wagons will move. When any child stops beside a resource that they need, they can load the resource into their wagon. When your wagon is full, you get to build a new house! The house must be placed in the right spot in the village. Then the resources are returned to the board so they can be collected again! After you build all your houses, you begin collecting resources again to build the Town Hall. The player who builds the Town Hall wins the game!

Fund raising, advertising, whistle-stop campaigning, debates and even the occasional gaffe make this a very interesting and entertaining game. For me, the retro appearance of the game is a plus. Tracking the campaign with tally boards and grease pencils adds atmosphere, and I just love to put the vote cards in the ballot box! Two hour playing time, suitable for 2-4 players ages 12 and up. Younger players will probably need an adult to assist with learning the rules the first game or two. Recommended.

(More customer reviews)Is quite disappointing on how the expansion planets maps turn out to be. It is actually stickers that you have to stick onto the map. If you want to stick it permanently, you have to slice the sticker into two so that you can fold the board back to keep. Maybe they should have design the the expansion maps in a card board form so that we can just place it on top of the map and remove once we are done playing. Now I have to decide whether to stick it permanently or to make my own card board planets for the game.

Settlers of Catan - 15th Anniversary Edition Review

(More customer reviews)To preface this review, I have played Settlers of Catan for years, using the minuscule Portable Edition, the current edition of Basic Game, and the 10th Anniversary 3D game sets before. When I saw the 15th Anniversary game set was being released, I was very excited to wait for a copy. However... I'm not entirely satisfied with my purchase.
First, the box itself: It is very nice, and the finish is beautiful. However... at minimum, it could have benefited from a small bit of felt in the bottom of each slot in the box. It could have also benefited from wider card trays that "sit" correctly within the box... the flimsy plastic card trays that are included are not as wide as each opening in the box, so it creates a sort of teeter-totter effect unless you balance all of the parts in the box juuuust right.
The board itself is fairly nice. I would have appreciated real true wood tiles, instead of wooden particle board, but the fit & finish is still good on the individual pieces.
The resource and development cards are the very same size and sort of cards you get with the standard retail Basic Game -- just with different art on each card. I was hoping for slightly higher quality cardstock or even the nice woven nylon-like textured cards, and I was somewhat disappointed to find just the standard cards.
I did note that there are typo's on each player's Building Tiles, instead of "Longest Road 2VP / Largest Army 2VP", the tiles actually read "Longest Road 2SP / Largest Road 2SP". The actual award tiles for Longest Road and Largest Army are, however, correct.
Overall, I would have been extremely satisfied with this game set if I had paid approximately $70 for it (e.g. double the regular Basic Game cost). However, I bought it for US$150 at a local gaming store (Amazon is awesome, but don't forget to support your local game room!), and for that price, I am a little bit peeved with this product's shortcomings. I will probably sell it to a friend and buy the 10th Anniversary 3D Game Chest instead.

Settlers of Catan Replacement Frame: SettlersBoard Review

If you play Settlers of Catan at all, you realize after a few uses, the cardboard border pieces start to not fit together as well and start to lift up. This makes setting up the board and moving the board very difficult.
With SettlersBoard, they make setup the way it should be, a snap! Everything plugs together perfectly. One of the best features of it is that you can now move the board easily because the pieces fit together and dont come apart, so sliding the board across the table is easy!
I would absolutely recommend this accessory to anyone who plays Settlers of Catan. Its awesome!

Cities and Knights of Catan Review

(More customer reviews)After falling in love with the original game, I decided to get an expansion pack and this is the first one I got. Great decision.
A little note if you are considering this expansion: be prepared to spend more time learning the game. It takes a lot of looking back at the manual to get the hang of it.
Once you get going, you will become even more hopelessly addicted to the game. You get to build giant cathedrals which are twice the value of cities. You also get to fight the barbarian with your knights - which brings all the people playing the game to side WITH each other instead of AGAINST each other.
But I think the ultimate feature in this expansion are the new cards involved. When you draw a development card, you get the coolest options such as viewing everyone's cards and basically taking what you want... as well as other things... such as being able to hold up to 13 cards in your hands if you have the right amount of cities, etc.
Also new in this game is the merchant which allows you a 2 for 1 trade which can be moved around just like the robber.
Get this expansion!!! You will love it!

(More customer reviews)Fans of Scotland Yard or Fury of Dracula will have seen some familiar territory in this game. The one versus many mechanic but the overall feel and look of this game feels fresh and to me is absolutely superb. The box design, the board itself, and all the little tokens look great. The board is a very nicely designed map of London with an old time feel to it but very well illustrated. My wife spilled some soda on it when we first played and I just wiped it up with a paper towel. No harm done. Awesome.
The game is divivided into two halves basically. The setup and the chase. The rules and explanation to a non-gamer may seem daunting but they're actually quite simple and very clear. Great job on the rules.
The beginning of the game allows for both sides to set up some kind of a strategy and to try and bluff their opponents into what they may be planning. The game shines when the chase starts, Jack strikes and the detectives work together to catch him or prevent him from getting to his hideout.
Logic, strategy, deduction. It's all here in a very rich and thematic game. The theme may be a little dark and gruesome for some considering it's based on actual events and the murderer was never caught but if you can get past that you have a very fun cat-and-mouse game in front of you.

Settlers of the Stone Age Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a big fan of the "Settlers" board games, and I have played almost all of them. I didn't like Starfarers of Catan, because I thought it was too "gimicky" with that plastic rocket and all that. Settlers of the Stone Age is like a cross between Catan and Starfarers. The rules are a little more complicated, and there are more pieces, but it's not overwhelming.
There is one difference in particular that's worth mentioning. In Catan, it's not unusual for one player to dominate the board, receiving more resources per turn than anyone else, making it harder and harder to beat him as the game progresses. That is because in Catan, the player's empire always grows. Not so in Stone Age. A player can only have five camps (the equivalent of settlements in Catan), and there are no cities. If a player wants to build a sixth camp, he must remove one of his other camps first. This encourages players to keep moving, rather than to keep growing. I think that's a nice complement to Settlers of Catan.
There are three drawbacks to this game. First, setting up the board takes longer, because there are more pieces. Second, there is less variety in the board because the terrain layout is fixed. And third, although it was possible to have only two players in Catan, you really need at least three for Stone Age. With only two players, the game isn't balanced, and one player usually beats the other by a wide margin. If you're looking for a two-player Settlers game, get the Settler of Catan Card Game.
