(More customer reviews)This game was designed by true lovers of Tolkien's literature and it shows. Its game mechanics ingeniously capture the struggle for Middle Earth in a deeply satisfying 2-3 hour game of political, military and moral battles. Can the Free Peoples hold off the onslaught of Sauron's forces long enough for the ring-bearers to destroy the ring? Will the Shadow player be able to doom the ring quest by whittling down the companions and corrupting the ring-bearer? Will the fragmented free nations rise up and unite against the incursion of evil, or will they fall one by one?
All of this was part of the original edition of this game, and the Third Age expansion added more strategy and options. The game was so well received that someone had the propitious idea to craft a very special edition of the game that would be a worthy tribute to all that Tolkien and his Middle Earth literature has contributed to human culture.
I had seen the web images and read the reviews, but nothing could prepare me for the gorgeous immensity that is "War of the Ring: Collector's Edition". It appears that nothing was spared in making this production truly unique. The sheer size of the shipping box is impressive, but when you open it, you see what appears to be an ancient elven book, complete with ornate carving and elvish calligraphy. The wooden box is hinged and you open the cover of the "book" to reveal black velvet lined trays brimming with the hand-painted miniatures which will engage one another in the War of the Ring. Orcs, elves, dwarves, oliphaunts, horsemen, archers, men, hobbits, ring-wraths, Nazgul -- they are all here. The heroes are here as well, Frodo, Sam, Gimli, Legolas, Strider, Gandalf, and Boromir. And opposing themselves on the side of evil, the Witch-King, Sarumon and the Balrog of Moria.
The rulebook is in a hard-cover faux-leather binding with silver elvish script on the cover. If you are learning the game, I highly recommend after reading the rulebook, downloading the online client from [...]and opening the sample game log in the game client [...]and stepping through it to really see how the game works together.
The game board is a lavishly rendered map of Middle Earth, with each territory labeled in both English and Elvish (for those who long for the time before the Age of Men). This is where the leader of the Free Nations must decide which way to send the Fellowship, and which companions to send along and which to send to rouse the nations to fight together against Sauron. Sauron, too, must decide where to launch his crippling blows, whether to subdue the free world one nation at a time or open multiple fronts. And how much of his resources should he devote to seeking for the One Ring of Power?
You are looking at this game because J. R. R. Tolkien fired your imagination and enriched the world of human ideas with his masterpieces of fantasy literature. No movie or board game can fully capture his vision, but this one comes astonishingly close, in a package that you will be truly proud to possess and play.

War of the Ring Collector's Edition is a strategic wargame in a fantasy setting where one player takes control of the Free Peoples, and the other player controls Shadow Armies. As with the standard version of this game, one can win a military victory, either as Sauron and the Shadow Armies if he conquers a certain number of Free People cities and strongholds, or with similar conditions when playing as Fellowship and Free People. The game may also be won by the Free People by completing the quest of the Ringbearer and trying to get secretly to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. Hidden movement prevents Sauron's awareness of the real intention of his enemies and keeps him looking across Middle Earth for the precious Ring. The Free People player must balance the need to protect the Ringbearer from harm, against the attempt to raise a proper defense against the armies of the Shadow, so that they do not overrun Middle Earth before the Ringbearer completes his quest.Limited and different choices are offered each turn through the roll of action dice which dictate the type of actions may be performed. The choices range from personal character actions to political and military decisions through which to develop your winning strategies. The War of the Ring Collector's Edition brings all that was in the base game and introduces factions, new characters and new events from the expansion, including Galadriel, the Balrog, the Ents, Dunlendings, Siege Towers, Catapults, Corsairs, and more. It is a complete game with updates to the original game rules and incorporates the expansion rules and cards to allow for new strategies to play out. This increases both the offensive options of the Shadow Forces and defensive options of the Free Peoples. This all-in-one version of the game is deeper, more comprehensive, and offers both more, and more difficult, choices of what path to pursue to victory, and where to spend one's resources.
