Various versions of the Werewolf game have existed for some years. I really liked the Werewolves of Miller's Hollow version when I came across it. I have had a lot of fun over the years with the original game.
The expansion adds additional options to the game. The publishers could have just released this set as simply expansion #2, but they included the original game along with the expansion for those who don't already have the original. Granted, just an expansion might have been cheaper for those who already own the original, but there are advantages to getting new copies of the original pieces with this new set. The new pieces are much heavier card stock. As mentioned by another reviewer, it would be fairly easy for the pieces to wear such that you could tell the character cards apart even when looking at the backs (which should all look the same). At least the heavier card stock should make this a little less likely than for the original set. Still, I am tempted to buy a backup set for replacement pieces, in case the game goes out of print.
WARNING to those who want to use the New Moon expansion #1 with the new set:
The Village set is compatible with expansion #1, New Moon, as stated by the publisher. However, the five new characters that come with the New Moon set consist of stickers that the user sticks on five of the ordinary villager cards from the original set to change them to the new special characters. You can use these stickers on the new cards in The Village, but if you've already stuck them to your old cards from the original set, you might not be able to peel them off the old cards to put them on the new Village cards without destroying the stickers. This could mean having to buy a new copy of New Moon in order to use it with The Village. When the publisher says the set is compatible with New Moon, they don't warn existing owners of this issue.
One other thing I would mention is that my copy of the set did not have the transparent zip lock bag for the tokens that was mentioned in the rule book. (The two red cloth bags were included). I'm not sure if this was an oversight for just my set, or if it was decided not to include the plastic bag, and they just didn't change the reference on the back of the rule book. The box does not mention the plastic bag in the list of what's included. This is a minor point, as zip lock baggies are cheap and easy to obtain.
Overall I would recommend this game. It gives more options for Werewolves of Miller's Hollow, and users can choose which pieces they which to use for any given game, allowing for much variety each time you play if desired.
