(More customer reviews)ARRGH! Set sail for treasure and adventure, but beware the Black Pirate.
We bought Animal Upon Animal (Tier auf Tier) for our 4 year old for Christmas and the game is beloved. Our next foray into the world of HABA games is the Black Pirate (der schwartze Pirat), a chase and treasure game with an interesting move dynamic (you blow the ships with a small bellows, like the kind that sucks mucus from a baby's nose).
A roll of the dice tells you the number of blows you are allowed to move in search of treasure or whether you take on the roll of the Black Pirate (key evil laugh here) ramming helpless ships and stealing their treasure.
This is an enjoyable and well-made game (although making the large board a jigsaw can lead to bumps which hinder a ship at an awkward moment) like most HABA games that I've seen. The blow dynamic is fun, although a bit beyond most 3-6 year olds. We've seen the greatest enjoyment out of our 10 year old on this game. Even my husband and I have found our technique needs some work.
Fun and silly, good pieces, probably best for 6+ and expect that everyone will need some time learning to make the ships go. Play around with it before your first play.
