(More customer reviews)Pirate versus Pirate seemed like an odd game at first, especially since it supported three players and the playing board was a triangular surface.
Overall, the rules were very straight forward. Grab a coin and get it back to your boat, or take out all the other pirates. The game play ends requires a bit of strategy and a balance of offense versus defense, but overall the game is relativley quick and fun.
The game is *not* slated for under the age of like 8; however, I play it with my two five year olds. The game helps then with counting and basic (checkers level) strategy. They completely enjoy the game and actually have fun with it. Of course, strategy isn't as much a part of playing with 5 year olds, but learning counting and movement is. Additionally, sequency is also learned because you can't move a coin into your boat until you move other pirates out of the boat and out of the way!
When playing with older people, the game steps up to a different level. In that case, you have to think similarly to games like checkers. You have to go for the goal while still watching for your own pirates.
The reality is that this game is determined as much by the random roll of the dice (2 four sided dice) as anything; however, randomness has always been a part of gaming. In this case, it is the randomness that makes the game interesting--that combined with decisions such as whether to grab a coin and run, or take out an opponent's pirate!
The game is fun, and that is what counts.
