My wife and I play a lot of board games, and Hagoth is one of our favorites. The object of the game is to be the first to score 25 points. To score points, players create blueprints of ships, than build according to their blueprints, and finally sail their ships from one shore to the next. You score whenever you set sail and whenever you complete a voyage. There are more points for larger ships and longer voyages, as well. So the game is great at making you manage your options while still evoking a race-to-the-finish feeling. To play, the game uses a combination of card play and "free actions" - both options allow you to create blueprints, build your ships using wooden tokens, and sail, and some cards allow you to hinder your opponents' progress. Some of the components are not as durable as players might like - well, the cards, really, but the board and playing pieces as well as the wooden tokens are awesome and durable -, but for a game for a family to play on Sunday afternoon or Monday evening, it is a great deal, especially for the price. More importantly, it's a fun game to play: it has that "I have too much to do and not enough time on my turn to do them all!" feel that, for us, makes for a compelling and fun game.
