I got this for my 4 yr old daughter for Christmas who asked for a game. She loves board games and does not care for computer games at all so it was difficult to find a truly educational board game that was not too easy for her but also that was not so difficult that it was not fun. This game, which is of very good quality has a game board that is in four durable pieces which look like a puzzle. So the child puts the four pieces together to form the game board. There are 4 different colored game characters to choose from which are 4 little boys with bug nets. (only problem i had with it is they didnt have boys and girls mixed which my daughter picked up on right away) The players each get a durable game card shaped like a bug jar. The player roles the die, follows that many spaces along the trail. All the spaces are identified with either a + or - number. So if the player roles a 4, and they move 4 spaces and land on a space that has a +3, they ADD three bugs to their jar. The bugs are magnetic so they magnetize to the jar. If on their next role, they land on a space with a -1, then they have to SUBTRACT 1 bug from their jar. This goes on till they reach the end of the game board. The time of the game goes fast which is nice for this age group which I believe the box has listed as ages 3-6? There are two or three different ways to end the game and the players decide that from the start; either by whoever has the most bugs or whoever gets to the finish line first, etc... which is nice as there are several ways to win so the game is different each time. I also found, in addition to the game teaching basic math with addition and subtraction that if you land on a space that requires the player to subtract more than what they have on the card, you can introduce negative and positive. When the game is done, each player can then look at the bugs in their own jar and then identify each one by using the insect key/guide that comes with it. A nice game, my daughter likes it a lot and I am happy with it as well.
