(More customer reviews)We've been Color Wonder fans for years and have seen products come and go. This sound studio is a neat twist, and I think we'll be keeping it for a long time. The package includes the sound studio drawing board, 12 color wonder pages with pictures, 6 blank color wonder pages, 5 mini markers and 6 sound cards. Each sound card has 10 different sounds with themes including city, jungle, dinosaur, music, farm, and beach; a nice, basic variety. There is also a storage place in the back for 5 markers (mini or regular sized).
3 AA batteries (not included) are required before beginning. Once the batteries are installed you place a drawing sheet of paper under the clips and slide a sound card into the top. Applying a sound to the board is easy, you just push and hold the sound you want until it plays, then place and hold your finger on the board where you want until you hear the sound again. You do have to press firmly, but the sound will stay until you remove it with the erase button. You can remove each sound individually or erase the whole board to start fresh. The different drawing sheets follow the same themes as the sound cards, so you can mix it up or use the card that applies to that themed sheet. It seems that other color wonder sheets will also fit from the spiral bound books or blank drawing pads which is nice. Expansion card packs in Toy Story and Princess themes are also available separately.
Overall we're pleased and I know this product will get lots of use. Pros include ease of use, encourages matching and using your imagination, works with other color wonder sheets and has two volume control levels (medium and loud). Cons include no storage for paper or sound cards. We'll probably end up using a small bag and using the clips on the front to keep things together. Also the paper is loose, so we're putting it under the clips also to hold in place, it would have been nice to have somewhere in the case to put the extra sheets. I think that this is a nice addition to the color wonder line and would be fun for the 3+ recommended to an early elementary school aged child.
Edit: Figured out what the sound cartridge slot on the side is for - when you purchase an expansion pack you have to insert the included cartridge into the sound studio in order to use the expansion pack sound cards. With the original set of sounds being included in the sound studio (no cartridge required), this isn't an issue. So if you want to use the Toy Story expansion pack, you have to insert the Toy Story cartridge into the sound studio every time you use the Toy Story sound cards and it doesn't appear that you can mix/match expansion packs.
