Love this game! It is essentially a card game. There are dice to determine actions that are available each turn, and high quality illustrated cards with text on them. There is no board per se, but an illustrated connectable cardboard track that separates your cards and your opponent's. The track has 9 illustrated slots. They contain dice numbers from 1-6, plus a money and card draw marker, and one additional "bribery" slot. Cards are played under 7 of the slots, on your side. Each turn that you start with any empty slots costs you victory points. You get a hand of cards, which are varied in nature, and have different abilities. From your hand, you pay to play each to your side of the board. Cards are played on empty slots, or they may replace an existing one. Cards may affect opponent cards across from them, or perhaps any of the opponent cards, depending on card abilities.
Each turn consists of 3 phases. First you pay victory points for empty slots. Next you roll 3 dice to determine the actions you can take on your turn. Phase 3 is choosing and taking your game actions. Generally speaking, your cards that are already on the table in numbered slots can only be "activated" (used) when one of the dice you rolled matches the dice number on that slot. There are some exceptions for certain cards. Your dice results can also be used to get more money, in amounts equal to a roll, or to draw cards (you keep 1 of your choice each draw). The bribery slot allows you to activate any card you have there on any turn, with any dice roll, by paying money. Your choices for actions based on your dice rolls are plentiful and varied, and managing them to create a winning strategy is important. So is luck, to a degree. But it's a nice balance.
Rules are pretty clear, but read the card texts carefully. Winning is determined by victory points. The game end is triggered by 2 circumstances. First, if you run out of victory points, you lose. Second, if the stock supply of victory points is used up by both players, then immediately when it is emptied you each count your victory points. Highest total wins. That's it. This game is a bit similar in mechanics to, say, "Jambo" or "Dominion". Not quite as daunting as either of them, really, where cards are concerned. There are less of them here, but enough different ones with enough different abilities to create an impressive game. This game moves along a bit quicker than those, in general, although longer games can occur if certain card combos are in play (or not in play). Overall for price, quality, variety, and ease of play, you can't beat this. I was hooked at once. Hope the same happens for you.
