Plan Toy Nuts and Bolts Review

Plan Toy Nuts and Bolts
Average Reviews:

I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday and he likes screwing and unscrewing the pieces into different designs. He especially likes the yellow pieces( his fav. colour). I like that it helps refine fine motor skills of finger dexterity and bilateral coordination. I am glad that is is eco-friendly an child safe. Highly recommend. Fits nice in pocketbook and diaper bag too. Keeps him busy at doctor's office, restaurants, and anywhere else you don't want them wondering around. Plan Toys is one of the few "e-zero" companies.

Olden Days Wood Toy Iron Review

Olden Days Wood Toy Iron
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was pleasantly surprised when I received this iron. I bought it after looking at plastic ones and deciding to go with something prettier and less likely to break. For the price I was expecting a fairly small toy made of so so wood with a surface that might need some sanding. I was wrong! It's just the right size for my four and five year olds, about 2/3 the length of a real iron. The wood is a beautiful hardwood and is sanded to a very smooth finish (I think it may have a beeswax finish on it as well as some other camden rose toys do). The wood is smooth enough that it glides over fabric just like a real iron would. The handle is very securely attached as well. It's really a wonderful toy for the price, I would have paid double what I did for it. I'm now planning on adding the wooden ironing board from the same company to use with it.

PlanToys Shape Sorter Review

PlanToys Shape Sorter
Average Reviews:

My son is much younger than the recommended age for this toy, but is able to get a lot out of it. The pieces are easy to grab, but not too small for him to put in his mouth. Looking forward to years of use.

Click Here to see more reviews about: PlanToys Shape Sorter

The Shape Sorter allows children to identify and match the shape patterns with those on the board while learning about fraction at the same time.
Playtime Ideas:

In the initial stage, children can stack the geometric shape on the board which will help develop hand muscle and eye-hand coordination. Parents can help teach about colours and shape.
In the next stage, parents can ask children to identify and match the shape patterns with those on the board such as circle, square, triangle and learn about fractions at the same time.
Lastly, parents can guide children to place the 2 different shape patterns with those on the board helping them learn about problem solving skill (AQ).
Parents should praise children when they can do it and advice as well as encourage them if they are not able to.

Wood Expressions Wood Pegged Chinese Checkers Set - 7" Review

Wood Expressions Wood Pegged Chinese Checkers Set - 7

This set is a perfect size to take to places. My wife & I often bring it to our favorite bar to play a game or two on the table without having to have the table cleared first. It is well made. The plastic pieces may be a little loose, although if they fit tighter they'd perhaps be harder to pick up and push in.

Letter Dwarves Review

Letter Dwarves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Letter Dwarves is a game produced by Haba aimed at reinforcing alphabet and vocabulary skills in children ages 6-10 (these are the manufactuers recommended ages, I believe kids as young as 4 can enjoy this game). Haba is known for producing kids games with high-quality components and this one is no exception.
The goal of Letter Dwarves is to be the first player to move your dwarf pawn around the board while collecting at least 3 gold tokens. To accomplish this, players flip tiles depicting one of the following:
1 - a set of objects
2- "Fairy Forget-me-not" holding a picture frame asking you to name 2 objects, 2 animals or give 2 names
3 - "Hob Hotchpotch" holding a frame asking the player to identify a letter falling between two other letters
For tiles 1 or 2, the player has a choice of using one of 4 letters, each of which is resting on a barrel on the gameboard and each having a point value (1-4) used to move the players dwarf around the board. The player must choose one of the four letters to name an object on the card (in case 1) or 2 animals, objects or names (in case 2). In order to land on treasure spaces and collect gold, the player may need to use a specific letter associated with the number of spaces he needs to move. This is the stage where vocabulary comes in as players try to think of different ways to name an object on the card (ie "castle" could also be "fortress" or "palace" etc...). Alternately, if a player draws tile type 3, they name the missing letter and roll a 6-sided die to determine movement points.
My kids enjoyed Letter Dwarves, though perhaps not quite as much as some other games we've played. I do think this is a good game to help younger kids work on their vocabulary and alphabet. I also like the fact that it encourages kids to really use their powers of observation at times. My son needed to name an object beginning with E and had a card with a Zebra, a Camel, a fence, shed, bushes... and was drawing a blank until it finally hit him that the animals had Eyes and Ears. For my daughter, the game was good for getting her to identify beginning sounds of words with their letters.
Overall a pretty good game for kids. It's hard to go wrong with Haba, a company that consistently puts out quality products.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Letters & Numbers in a Box Bundle Review

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Magnetic Letters and Numbers in a Box Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this set because you get numbers and letters for a reasonable price considering the quality which is quite good...I would definitely choose these sets over the cheap plastic ones because the backs are a complete magnet which makes them hold on without drifting down...The colors are satisfactory, except the blue on the numbers is more like a purple...You may want to refrain from giving these to a child who is still put things in their mouth because the paper fronts will dissolve and come off...
Color notes...
The letter coloring scheme is simply an alternation of red, yellow, blue, and green.
The numbers coloring scheme seems like green/yellow are odds & red/blue are evens:
0 = 2(red) 1(blue)
1 = 2(red) 3(blue) 3(green) 3(yellow)
2 = 2(red) 1(blue)
3 = 1(green) 1(yellow)
4 = 1(red) 1(blue)
5 = 1(green) 1(yellow)
6 = 1(red) 1(blue)
7 = 1(green) 1(yellow)
8 = 1(red) 1(blue)
9 = 1(green) 1(yellow)

We try to find toys that we can play as a family from age 4 to 46. This one fits the bill. It requires some thought and strategy as well as math skills. It is developing our 4 and 6 year olds grouping and counting skills as well as learning to be able to win and lose gracefully. I would recommend.

Little Garden - Pegging Game Review

Little Garden - Pegging Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Haba Junior Peg Board at the same time for [...]. I was surprised when they both arrived and were pretty much the same size. The Junior Peg Board was listed for ages 1 1/2 at the time I purchased it, but I still don't let my just turned two year old child play with it unsupervised. It has since been changed to 2 1/2.
As far as the little flower garden, here's my opinion:
Pros:Cute
Cons: Way too expensive for what you get. They should have made it a bit larger. Half the pieces to this toy are choking hazards. I bagged that half up and figure my child can use them when three or older. The holes are small enough on the pieces that they can get stuck easily on little fingers. I keep this toy out of reach and only bring it down for supervised play.
Basically, if your two year old explores by putting things in their mouth occasionally or puts their fingers in holes, this is not the toy for you. It's a toy that I look at and want to kick myself for spending the money on.

Grasshopper in Zahlenland Review

Grasshopper in Zahlenland
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is just a set of round mats numbered 1 - 20, each with the correct amount of grasshoppers on it as an aid for children who are a bit shaky with number recognition.
You lay them out on the ground (I suppose you could make a hopscotch if you like) in random order (though nothing is stopping you from using them as a numberline) and there's a list of games for the tiles included - such as having one child jump on two different numbers and a second child jump on the sum (and then make a new problem for a third child, and so on). Obviously, you could make up your own games with these as well, and are not restricted to what they list.
You could get a similar effect by writing numbers on paper and taping them to the floor for each game, but let me say that this seldom works as well as you think.
Edit: By the way, just to clarify - the picture shown is NOT the item in question.
Edit again: LOL, a short time after writing my edit, the picture was fixed. I was helpful! If the image shows children jumping around on numbered pads, it's the correct picture.

Magnetic Patterning Board Review

Got on sale for my two-year-old. She loves it. Yes, I know the small pieces are a choking hazard. But she doesn't stick things in her mouth, and she only uses it under adult supervision.
It doesn't look like much, but my daughter gets a lot of play out of it. Daughter rearranges the pieces to make different abstract designs, on both sides of the board. She seems to just enjoy moving the pieces around. Seems to be good for stimulating creativity. Good car toy for older kids.

Wooden Blocks and Marbles Maze Master Set Review

Wooden Blocks and Marbles Maze Master Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this set for my 5 year old son for Christmas and he loves it (as do the rest of us). We have played with a variety of other marble runs, both wooden and plastic, and have often been frustrated by how hard they were for my son to assemble by himself, how unsteady they were, or how easily they broke. By contrast, his set has been very satisfying and fun for ages 5-40. It is easy to use, is very stable, and is durable so that my son can design and build marble runs without help. I am already amazed by how inventive he has been.
The blocks are high quality, well-milled hardwoods. Before I made this purchase, I did a lot of research and knew that I wanted one of the higher quality products. I chose this set because it is Made in America (I bought no toys made in China this year), it is very open-ended, and it seemed a good value for the money (I believe in paying for quality). I was not the least bit disappointed (a rare occurrence).
It's worth getting as big a set as you can afford. Initially, I thought my son might be overwhelmed by too many pieces (as he was with his Brio train tracks), so I held back some of the blocks. But the first time we played with it we got out the reserve blocks to build a 3-foot-tall marble run. I find the board to be useful as an even, stable building surface which keeps the marbles from rolling all over the place. If, however, you choose a smaller set that does not include the board, a level wooden carving board with grooves would work just as well. In fact we use one when a second person wants to build a separate maze.
This product is heirloom quality, encourages creativity, is a great lesson in simple physics, and sustains interest as it is different every time. Most importantly it offers tremendous play value if you or your kids like to build or design. Please, do not be fooled by imitations. I am glad I bought the original.

This game was a gift to my boys (then 7, 4 and 3) and it is on the short list of games we ALL can enjoy. While no reading is required, the color matching necessary to advance the farthest possible distance in each roll of the dice keeps kids thinking and strategizing. Fast-paced, yet interesting enough for mom and dad too. Small sized game board and durable wooden play pieces are cute and user-friendly for little hands. Every time we get this one out, I find myself smiling and thinking, what a great little game!
