Squad Leader Review

Squad Leader

Wow, this really old school!.Squad Leader was the most awesome board game and so detail-rich..like a sand-box simulation but portable. The game set the tone for what was needed to play war games on PCs. Squad Leader was the entry level game that opened to a whole series of Avalon Hill games that built upon this game as a system.SL is a dozen scenarios designed for WWII Eastern Front action. The opening scenario pits the Nazis against the Red Army in Stalingrad, with action centering around a tractor factory, played on the squad-single man level. There is the most awesome details to add to the action..charismatic leaders, demoralizing leaders, sewer movement, Russians that have the potential for going battle-crazy(berserkers),authentic machine gun characteristics ,elite veterans, green troops, tanks, flamethrowers you can even add weather or night characteristics..terrific! The BIG drawback to Avalon Hill games of that era is that when it's time for battle, there is this huge list of modifiers to the randomness of battle (done in the form of a dice roll). It takes forever to figure out all these modifiers before you roll and it's all done with a pencil and paper. Plus the rules are very, very, long, detailed and legalistic. So it makes for lots of rule 'discussions'. But keep in mind this was pre-PC and all these rules and modifiers were in effect computer-code for the nuts and bolts of game operation. At the time, while it was tedious to go thru these manipulations, it was none the less fascinating to think that the game designers could actually think about game mechanics in such detail, apply history to those mechanics, and then create a game that was FUN to play, if you had that sort of mentality.Like I said before, this is really 12 games in one and there are 4 or 5 more official games that are part of the Squad Leader series. These other games go on to cover WWII action in the West with the Allies vs the Germans. (If you can find any of these other games, it is highly interesting to see how the Americans are constructed-not quite Audi Murphy). If you really look around there was several 'unofficial' versions of Squad Leader that went into the Pacific and pitted US Marines and Japanese for some terrific island action. But AH eventually pinched those guys out for legal reasons. But they were very well thought out game mechanics and great historical game simulations. When PCs came into being, surprisingly SL never followed. The game system screamed for computer assistance.Amazingly to me, it just sort of got left behind. In 2011 there is Call OF Duty and those sorts of games that do an admirable and modern job. But if you have a interest in seeing the lengths that people would go to play Squad Leader..pick this up. It's a window into a time forgotten.

Cold War: CIA vs. KGB Review

Cold War: CIA vs. KGB

I bought this game as a gift for my son who was not quite 11 at the time. We've played it many times, and have enjoyed it a great deal. At first glance, the rules may seem a bit complex, as each turn of the game is divided into six phases. However, most of these phases are quite short, and once you play the game once or twice, you realize how quickly play can progress. This is a good introduction to more complex strategy games, as its rules are relatively simple, but successful play requires careful planning and a bit of subterfuge. As you might imagine, the game has good historical value as well.

Axis & Allies Europe Review

Axis and Allies Europe

If anyone is a true Axis and Allies game lover, and you've been wishing for another game by Avalon Hill, here it is! Axis and Allies Europe couldn't be a better game for the price. It comes with more units and much improved map (of the European theater only), and best of all, the game itself blows the former Axis and Allies game to bits! It is obvious that Avalon Hill spent much more time making A & A Europe then the original, for their is never a time when a player grows tired of this game. Unlike Axis and Allies, this Europe release comes with units that are equal to its country's nationality. In other words, the German's bomber is a Junkers 88, the Russian armored units are T-34s, and the American battleships are in the North Carolina class etc. Not only are the units improved, but their are more! As many Axis and Allies players have mentioned, where is the artillery? That's right...Their is artillery! Germans feature the the infamous 88mm gun, while the allies use the 105mm howitzer. Another added unit is the destroyer. Originally, you had the choice of either buying a sub or a battleship. Don't you think that their should be a ship in between a sub that costs 8 IPCs and a battleship that costs 24 IPCs? The destroyer will fix that problem, which costs 12 IPCs and basically has the power of a battleship moved down a notch on the dice roll. Both the battleships and destroyers can do coastal bombardment. Also, during strategic bombing, you can have fighters escort your bombers. Sounds nice, huh? Well, the defending country can send up interceptors, so it can be a risk with both enemy fighters attacking your bombing run as well as an anti aircraft gun firing from below. From air units to basic combat, the Axis and Allies game has come a long way. Now that the mighty German war machine faces three allies alone, you can pick a wide variety of stragedy. Atleast now the Germans have a chance at the beginning of the game, with ten U-boats, five fighters and a bomber, and an unbelievable ground force. If you have always been a true Axis and Allies lover, then nothing would be better then this big step Avalon Hill has made. An incrediblle game! Let the battle begin!

Axis & Allies Europe is the first Axis & Allies extension created by the original A&A designer, Larry Harris. He likes to call it "a whole new puzzle to solve." A&A Europe takes place only within the European theater where four powers (Germany, USA, USSR, and Great Britain) struggle on the continent, in the Atlantic, and across North Africa and the Middle East.

BattleLore Review

BattleLore

In my dreams, I imagine a game ... it is filled with fantasy magic, monsters and battle, overflowing with toy figures to push around an a brilliantly artistic, colorful board, adaptable so that I can play different scenarios or maybe even design my own, easy to teach to my dubious friends and even easier to play.
BattleLore, it turns out, is the promise of my dream - but not quite its fulfillment. Now, I believe Richard Borg to be a game design genius and I sincerely like the folks over at `Days of Wonder' but their products tend to leave me with a heightened state of ambivalence. The quality of their game box and its color printing are absolutely superb - but their choice of cover art is pedestrian - especially compared to the other components in their box. Their rules are gorgeously printed in full color replete with illustrations - but the organization of their rules makes the sequence unclear and overly complicates the simplest of concepts and tasks. As a former game designer, I found a number of brilliantly conceived linkages built into the rules to allow for unlimited expansion ... and yet these feel like abrupt dead ends as they are portrayed in the written rules. Such problems made it difficult to grasp the overall flow of the game and how its component rules fit together into a working system of play. Once we understood the rules, playing the game was easy and fun - but getting to that point was work and difficult.
Then there were the absolutely incredible number of fantasy figures included in the game - knights, archers and warriors of various strengths and kinds - that seemed literally to overflow the box and needed no assembly in order to play the game. That was wonderful but once again instantly offset by the small number of fantastic creatures included for play. Moreover, these were limited to dwarves, goblins and a single humungous spider. The iconic staple of epic fantasy - the dragon - was nowhere represented or even hinted at.
Perhaps this is the aspect of BattleLore which, for me, was the most disappointing - lack of fantasy context. The two opposing sides in the game are - French and English. I don't know about you but I have visited both France and England and while both were fantastic, I didn't count them as fantasy trips. The very first scenario in the game is called Agincourt, October 25th, 1415 under the leadership of the opposing Henry V and Charles d'Albret. Now for all you Shakespeare and Henry the Fifth fans, you may want to start your game with the St. Crispin's Day speech but I was leery. Was this game a fantasy game or a historical simulation game? It seems unable to decide.
All of this appears to be set in France - admittedly a France of the 13-1400s populated with some dwarves, goblins and one huge spider - but France nevertheless. This game proclaims on its cover `Epic Fantasy Adventures' and yet it contains only the barest of elements of what we think of as epic fantasy. This is my biggest problem with BattleLore; that it does not deliver the context of epic fantasy for which I had so earnestly hoped.
If you are looking for a fabulous design in a deceptively simple game with breathtaking tabletop displays ... then you will find this game well worth the price. It is achingly close to the game of my dreams ... but also achingly just short of perfection.

In a world that bridges history and fantasy, BattleLore puts you in command of a vast array of miniature troops on the battlefields of Medieval Europe. Players are introduced to the card-driven BattleLore game system through historical armies of men, but those troops are quickly supplemented with mercenary armies of fierce dwarves and goblin hordes and powerful, mythical creatures. Soon players will be employing Lore Masters - men of faith and magic, tricksters, and grizzled warriors - to lead their armies to victory on the fields of battle!
