Phantom Force Chess Review

Phantom Force Chess
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this chess game as a gift and have played about 15 games on it to date. It is enjoyable to watch the pieces move by themselves.
For playing a casual game, it is very challenging. There are many different levels to choose from (about 100 in total). I am by no means an advanced player (I can't think 7 moves ahead) but I am more advanced than the average beginner (my rating average on various websites is roughly 1800). That being said, I find the lower levels to be rather easy, but on the harder levels I get beaten soundly. Therefore, I would say the game overall is quite challenging. The computer also appears to strategically place its pieces on open ranks and files, rather than just attacking material (which many chess computers often do). For example, I recently offered a rook to the computer because I was about to put the computer into mate in 3 moves and the computer passed on the rook and instead defended against the threat.
The only downside is the game is loud and pieces take a few seconds to move. If you're a "good" player, it's defintely very challenging. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the higher levels beat "advanced" players with ease.

Want to play chess, but have no one to play with? Phantom Force is at the ready as your competitor. Play against this "smart" computer and watch in disbelief as the chess pieces actually move on their own! Or you can observe a fierce chess match as you watch the computer play against itself.
Game has incredible voice vocabulary that makes it easy and fun to play, game-saving memory, magnetic chess pieces that fit inside the built-in storage compartment; plus 136 levels (120 for play and 16 for analysis). Requires 6 "C" batteries, not included.

Star Wars E3 OTC MILLENNIUM FALCON Review

Star Wars E3 OTC MILLENNIUM FALCON
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the first time since 1995, the Millenium Falcon gets re-released with a few "Special" modifications making this the best version of the Falcon released to date. The Hyperdrive now illuminates with a cool blue glow when activated by 2 of the 4 authentic sound effects buttons that simulate the "Jump into Hyperspace" and the casual "Flyby." There is also the engine "Jump-Start" sounds and the forward mounted cannons strobe red and "fire" when activated. The forward-mounted missile projectile shoots and makes the sound effect from the film to re-create the assault on the Death Star's Main Reactor. There are even working headlights on the front of the ship just like in the movie. The cockpit has been redesigned to accomodate two of the post-Power of the Force scale action figures, but don't expect to fit both of the super-sized "steroids" Chewie and Han figures from the '95 Power of the Force line. The landing gear now "snap" firmly into place and will not easily push up into the hull so the Falcon will no longer "sag" when it is in landing mode. The overall quality of the plastic is much more durable and the paint and weathering are very authentic and an improvement over the stark-white vintage and the over-done Power of the Force versions. The interior is pretty much the same. There is a hidden floor compartment to hide some action figures and there is a rotating chair for the swivel cannons. The landing ramp lowers and there is the old chess board table. Now, take my advice, if you want to use the holo-chess table that was included with Dejarik Chewbacca, DO NOT apply the decal for the chess board over the table first. The table has been fastened by a small phillips head screw. Unscrew this first before applying the decal, this way you can place Dejarik Chewbacca over the stem and easily switch between tables as you prefer. Overall, the modifications to the old mold are very impressive but there is still room for considerable improvements. The cardboard backdrop inside the playset could have been removed and an access corridor and doorway could have been implemented to connect the cockpit to the aft section like in the films. The rotating cannon could have been retooled to accomodate one of the previously released "Gunner Stations" figures and the flashing lights could have been incorporated into the cannon barrels instead of on the front of the hull. I would like to have seen an Emergency Access Hatch and elevator to recreate Luke's rescue from Cloud City. Perhaps it would have been better to just create an entirely new scale Falcon from scratch ala the FX X-Wing to accomodate all of these possible features but for what they have done to the old mold, she may not look like much, but she still has it where it counts!

The Millennium Falcon is filled with exciting features that put you in the captain's seat. Electronic lights and sounds straight from the Star Wars movies signal when the Falcon's engines start up, cruise and make the jump to hyperspace.
Blast away at enemy TIE Fighters with twin "laser" cannons that light up and make firing sounds. Fire your missile, and hear weapon launching sounds. Rotating quad turbolaser cannon targets enemies while authentic vehicle flyby sounds put the dogfight right in your living room. The Falcon's cockpit opens to fit two action figures (sold separately) inside. Requires 2 "AA" batteries (not included).

Electronic Battleship: Star Wars Review

Electronic Battleship: Star Wars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this game for my 6 year old, and was very sorry I spent sooo much money on it! When I buy an electronic version of an established game or toy, I expect it to do some of the work for me. Is that asking too much? But in Star Wars Battleship, the two players have to punch buttons to enter each ship on their side. It takes a looonnnngggg time to set up the game before you can every play. Even in the "Classic" game mode. Then, you just spend your whole time entering coordinates. It takes much longer than the old basic Battleship to play. The only thing that is fun about this version is the voices and the hits that
you make.
My son could do this game after some coaching on how to enter coordinates, but the players still have to keep track of their hits and misses with little red and white pegs. The game does none of the work and tedious stuff for you! The only electronic part of the game are the voices and sound effects. I suppose you could play this game a lot faster by just not turning it on and playing it like the classic board game.
If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan, you will buy this game no matter what I say. In my opinion, though, it is just not worth the money. Especially when a parent sees how much work and hassle the whole game is. We've had more fun over the holidays playing with the basic board game "Trouble" that cost $10.
I would return the game if I could, but the stickers are in place, and the baggies are emptied. Tough luck for me, but maybe I can help someone else avoid the high sticker price, and the hassle.

I was looking for a new version of the Monopoly Game for my kids to take to school. We already had spongebob and the original game. I really wanted the Tim Burton version but couldn't find it in the stores. I saw Star Wars, Disney... sounded too boring. I bought this one and my 11 year old girls and I played all night. Cool facts from around the world and I love the credit card feature! No more money!! That is good and bad since I like the kids practice how to count money... but we emphasize other learning such as fun facts around the world and negotiating for a property. The pace of game a lot faster since not getting bogged down with the paper money. Everything fits self contained in drawers that fit under board... Love it!

Excalibur 712 Ivan II The Conqueror Review

Excalibur 712 Ivan II The Conqueror
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as I received this, I thought I didn't receive the chess pieces until I opened the storage compartment underneath the unit which I felt was a nice Feature.
Even at it's most basic level, playing is still a challenge. The voice of Ivan is ever present with you and taunts if a big mistake was made as in a premature capture of a Queen. The touch sensitivity of the board is good and it doesn't take more then just a light press to register with the computer.
Movement of the game pieces is easy due to the graphical interface of the board on the supplied LCD. Also the same voice gives both confirmation of origin to destination. On top of this, there is also a coordinate view of each move. Movement of Ivan's pieces are quick and painless. I have played over 20 gaves in the span of two evenings and haven't tired of it. It is definitly a game that will sharpen your playing. The voice of Ivan can be disabled if you prefer, but I actually like it. The battle sound effects work great with the capture of either players pieces. The manual is well written and explains more complex moves such as castling etc.
Now a few very minor negatives:
First, the game's control panel is a bubble type button system and very cheap. I feel that this will wear out over time, but the controls are in a intuitive order.
Second, a supplied AC adapter would have been nice. The unit takes 4 AA batteries. I recommend purchasing the newer type of Rechargable batteries. I am still on my same batteries over 12 hours of play.

Vtech - KidiJamz Studio Review

Vtech - KidiJamz Studio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Electronic toys annoy every nerve in my body. My poor neglected children are usually stuck with wooden toys or other non-noise making toys. In general, I believe electronics take away from the play value of the toy and make a lot of noise.
After seeing this recommended in several parenting magazines that aren't huge brand promoters, I took a closer look at this toy. I was skeptical it could be all that the recommendations and the few reviews claimed it to be and prepared myself to be disappointed.
That said, this toy is awesome. It is really more of a sound mixing board than a keyboard.
The niftiest part for me is the wheel that allows you to pick a style. For instance rock, dance, etc. If you turn it to rock and press "Old McDonald's Farm" it plays a guitar driven head-bangeresque version of the song. If you turn it to dance it switches the song style to a techno version. What is really nice is that it doesn't just play the song the same way but with "guitar sounds", but it actually plays a completely restyled song for each genre. Also, all of the buttons, the scratching disk, and mixing options change to fit that genre.
This is on a different plane than the usual noisemaker keyboard toy. There are a seemingly infinite number of ways to groove with neat options yet no learning curve! The whole system draws you in and you can't help but be inspired to create and make new things.
After being grossly disappointed in the horrible Vtech camera I bought them last year, I am relieved to see a quality product for childrens' electronics. I can tell someone put a lot of thought into this toy.

Say What Review

Say What
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love my Say What. I leave it out on the coffee table and get a quick game or two when I have a few minutes, or when I'm taking a break from working. When I have guests over its a fun conversation starter, or a good distraction when there is no conversation! Everyone always wants to play a few rounds.
300 Phrases is suprisingly deep, and it's just as fun (or more fun!) to watch as it is to play, kind of like a Nintendo Wii.
I'm a fan of board games, but they can sometimes take too long. "Say What" is great if you can't commit a lot of time and just want something casual for a few minutes up to a half hour or so.
The plastic balls are sturdy and I haven't had any problems yet. I've had it for over a month and I'm still on my first set of 4 AA batteries.
It really is great for grown-ups and kids. There are references from the 1980s up to today, and even if a little kid doesn't know the phrase, they still figure it out through context. A bit of "Back seat driving" makes for a fun group atmosphere.
Highly recommended.

Monopoly Here and Now World Review

Monopoly Here and Now World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will be upfront that Monopoly is not my favorite game, but I have several siblings & friends who love it... hence the purchase. The reason chose the world edition was because it had both electronic banking and the new twist (we have the original Monopoly.)
I love board games with the electronic banking, and this one was no exception. As a note though, the regular monopoly with electronic banking uses a different bank machine which is, for whatever reason, much quicker than the one included in this game. With that in mind if you are looking for electronic banking go with the other one. The electronic banking requires 2AA batteries (as do most standard board games, I use rechargeable).
This game is 2-6 players, ages 8+, and is played like regular monopoly. (The idea is to purchase places, try and get all (2-3) of the same color so you can add houses and hotels, create a "monopoly" and cause the others to go bankrupt, therefore becoming the winner.
One neat aspect of the game is that you don't know which 6 pieces your game will come with. The options are: (North America) Canadian Mountie, Cowboy Hat, Baseball Glove, Nascar, (South America) Inca Mask, Inca Statue, Easter Island Moai, Football, (Europe) London Cab, Pretzel, Matador, Windmill, (Africa) Safari Hat, Egyptian Head Mask, African Mask, Camel, (Asia) Chinese Dragon, Tuk-Tuk, Russian Dolls, Sumo Wrestler, (Australia) Kangaroo, Koala, Surfer, and Boomerangs.
You also get a mix of houses and hotels from each location which are really interesting. The locations, starting from "GO" are: (Brown) Gdynia, Taipei, (Light Blue) Tokyo, Barcelona, Athens, (Pink) Istanbul, Kyiv, Toronto, (Orange) Rome, Shanghai, Vancouver, (Red) Sydney, New York, London, (Yellow) Beijing, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, (Green) Paris, Belgrade, Cape Town, (Dark Blue) Riga, and Montreal.
The four what would be "railroads" in the original game are "Monopoly Rail", "Monopoly Air", "Monopoly Cruise", and "Monopoly Space."
The two that are normally the water company & electricity are "Solar Energy" and "Wind Energy."
Game Play:
The board comes with standard dice and cards (the electronic system is just for banking). The instructions recommend that if you have several people playing making one person's job the banker (and that's it). You will need it with this banking system. It has a noticeable lag in transactions and once the game gets going where every turn has bank transactions occurring it will take one full person to do this job.
Pros:
*Banking system is easier to keep up with and add up (in the end) than the paper money. Also you don't run into the problem of running out of paper money
*The 6 pieces from the 20-30 available are interesting
*The "world" theme adds an interesting twist. My little sister said on the first game "Woo! I got Boardwalk, uhh I mean Montreal" :)
*The houses from each different country are very creative
Cons:
*The bank system has a noticeable lag (especially compared to the original electronic monopoly) this can be frustrating, particularly if no one in your group wants to just do the bankers job
Overall we enjoy this game and are not disappointed with it. We especially love the creative touch the "World" aspect adds to it.

Guess Who Extra Review

Guess Who Extra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the original Guess Who for my boys (ages 9 & 6, purchased mostly at my younger one's persistent request) a couple months ago, and within a few weeks, they were both asking for Guess Who Extra. So it was a Christmas gift.
The Good:
1)the original Guess Who had two cheap little plastic frames to house the "card-holders" for the cards (one red and one blue), and for whatever reason, the red frame absolutely will NOT keep the card-holders in place. They fall out constantly, especially when flipping the frame to get all the card holders to stand up again. Or they get stuck and don't want to move at all. It takes minutes of adjustment to get it all back in working order, and it got so bad it actually affected our enjoyment of the game because set-up became such a pain. Glad to say this is NOT a problem with the new form factor that Guess Who Extra uses. There is just one main, closeable piece that opens easily to an inverted V (one player sits on one side and one on the other), and all the moveable parts move just like they should, simply and painlessly.
2) With six different sheets of categories to choose from, the options are much greater now than with just the "Usual Suspects" faces that the original had. This will likely prolong enjoyment of the game significantly.
3) Now there are four game options also. We haven't even tried them all yet, but again, this will likely just prolong enjoyment of the game. And if we don't like a particular option, we just won't play it. Nothing wrong with the original game dynamics anyway.
The Bad:
1) Okay, there's only one, and it's really not bad so much as it is a significant consideration. But... some of the categories make for some quite "difficult to phrase" questions. Asking questions can be a little tricky. For instance, the Household category has things like a television, a telephone, and a spoon. One of the sample questions the instructions provide for this category is "Does this item live in the [insert room here]?" But some of the items might or might not live in multiple rooms depending on the viewpoint of the person asking/answering. The answers can be extremely subjective, unlike the mostly objective answers the original game requires. There are quite a few examples of this, and the first game my kids played against each other resulted in my playing referee to decide how questions should be answered (or whether it was even appropriate to ask them). My family's workaround for this has been, for the first few games we played, to say "Ok, when this particular question is asked from now on, these are the cards we're going to say are affected by it" and then reiterate that every time that question is asked until we get used to it.
On the plus side of this consderation, though, it gets you to think and to talk with the kids about why questions are answered how they are, and it gives the younger ones an opportunity to learn (for instance, the Animals card has given my six-year-old the chance to more concretely learn what constitutes the difference between a reptile and an amphibian, a mammal and a bird, etc). You just have to be careful with the questions, and make sure everyone is on the same page as to how they're answered.
The Indifferent:
Guess Who Extra uses batteries. Kids love things with the batteries and the resultant lights and sounds, but they're really not necessary here. The batteries do three things: provide a Yes button (to push when the answer's Yes), provide a No button, and provide a timer. Ok, the timer might be cool for some of the game variants (but I almost certainly won't enforce any of the timer rules with my kids), but the Yes and No buttons, really? Was there something wrong with SAYING yes and no? The batteries/electronic side of this game are a cheap way to jack up the price in my opinion. I know, I'm nitpicking, but I mostly didn't see the point.
Overall, though, this is a pretty cool game with lots of potential and FAR sturdier/easier to use than the original. And it all comes in a nice, neat, fully encloseable package.

It's the same classic "Guess Who" fun, but with tons of fun extras. This deluxe version of Guess Who has six total themes and more than one hundred characters to play with. MONOPOLY Revolution Review

MONOPOLY Revolution
Average Reviews:

Oh Monopoly, such good times lasting 100000 hours. So, they tried to revolutionize Monopoly a bit. Here is the good, the bad and the ugly.
The Good:
Electronic device that allows you to use Debit Cards instead of Money. The game unit has music which makes the game a bit more fun. Meh. The new rules make the game move a little faster. Now, when you land in a space you have two options, buy or auction it. This will, at least, take 1 hour out of the game.
The Bad:
No more Free Parking money. But, my friends and I made a rule that anyone that landed in Free Parking will get an X amount of money. The game unit will make it a bit harder to keep track of your money, since you can't see it. So, much like real life, when you buy, buy and buy without noticing your depleting bank account.
Two almost-see-through dice with silver colored-dots. This is a face palm moment. The dots are hard to distinguish in low light and sometimes, even good lighting. We just got new dice and threw these ones away. They are worthless.
The Ugly:
Boring game pieces, they are all the same shape with some crappy images on them. I like actual and singular game pieces. They are more fun.
Very little educational value. No more real money you can touch and count. This game no longer teaches kids how to count and keep track of money. Wasn't that one of the objectives of the game? Now, it just teaches them how to use a debit card and barely keep track of their money.
Other games have been able to better update. For example, I like the new version of the The Game of Life Twists & Turns. Not so for Monopoly. I think I will go back to my old monopoly. The more I think about this Monopoly, the more faults I find with it. My friends were thoroughly bored with this version and pleaded to get an old Monopoly.
