Play Ball Review

Have a six year old with nothing to do? Want to find a way to interact with your children? Then try Play Ball by Gamewright. Gamewright has created a truly unique game that makes learning addition fun.
Play Ball is fast and easy to learn. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and I was up and playing in less than three minutes. What makes this game different is that way it teaches cooperation and sportsmanship to the very young.
Educators, parents and kids will spend hours learning to add to nine. A great game for those rainy days when you have nothing to do. Play ball is small enough to travel and extremely easy to store.
Play ball is priced to fit any and all budgets. Play Ball is a definite winner.

Playballs baseball theme comes directly from our fans requests. Sports are one way to learn about math, strategy, and competition. Players use addition and grouping skills to field teams equal to nine points in each of the four-color suit. Their opponents strategically use their action cards to block. Addition and matching skills come into play in game plays for younger players.

Kamisado Review

Kamisado
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Why have more people not yet heard of this great abstract strategy board game - Kamisado?! Fun, not just a brain-bender.
[A] One game takes about 10-18 minutes. Usually people play best 2-of-3.
[B] Base game rules are very simple.
[C] Elegant, clever concept.
[D] Visually appealing, albeit a bit busy.
HOW PLAYED:
A chess board has 64 squares, divided among two colors (white-ish and black-ish). Kamisado has 64 squares divided among eight colors, eight colors strategically located that look randomly located.
Both Kamisado players have eight pieces called "towers". One player gets the white towers, the other player gets the black towers. However...
...each white tower has a colored top. No two white towers have the same color for their tops. Crucially these top colors match the eight square colors! (Same situation for black towers, of course.)
Players alternate turns. Each turn is the movement of one the player's own towers.
Towers move forward only; never sideways nor backwards. Towers move only in straight lines, like a queen in chess (along columns or diagonals). Towers can move one or more squares per move, but towers can never jump any other piece.
THE TRICK: If White's tower lands on a green square, then for Black's turn Black must move the black tower that has the green top!! (Same restriction for White's turn, of course.)
THE GOAL: Simply advance any of your towers to your opponent's back row (empty) squares. Like getting a "king" in checkers.
The designer of this game, Peter John Burley, had a deep understanding of what he was doing when he designed this game. Leave the pieces in the box and study the board, lots of good reasoning went into it.
The type of strategy in this game is a fun kind for the human mind. At gatherings I find people prefer Kamisado over other great games such as Quoridor, Khet, Twixt, and Quarto.
How has such a great game remained mostly a secret unknown?

Kamisado is a game of pure skill and strategy! There are no dice, cards or any other chance element. It's just you against your opponent! The aim in each round is to be the first to get an octagonal 'dragon tower' to the opposite side of the board, by moving the towers in straight lines, either forwards or diagonally forwards. It sounds easy doesn't it, but the twist is that you can only move a tower if its color matches the color of the square that your opponent last moved to. Also, you will find that the routes you want to use are blocked by enemy towers (and sometimes your own!). As the game unfolds, your towers will be promoted to 'Sumos', and will have the ability to push your opponents pieces backwards, earning you extra turns. The situations continue to become more complex and challenging, until one player accumulates the required winning total and can be declared a 'Kamisado Grand Master' - until the next game!

Monkey Lab Review

Monkey Lab
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll leave out all of the possible bad puns. The theme is each player plays a monkey, trying to free other lab monkeys from the lab building. You move around several rooms, collecting objects to help unlock cages and free the other monkeys. You get points, which vary in quantity, depending on how hard it is to unlock the cage. See another monkey carrying something useful to them or to you? You might be able to attack them, monkey style, make them drop it, and move them to a far-away room. Or play a card that allows you to steal the item. This is fun when the other player is near to their goal. You also have to contend with a bumbling security guard named Murray. He moves around when a guard card is played, and he slows you down as you spend time hiding in a room if he is there.
There is a board consisting of 4 double sides pieces, which can be arranged at random to create a few different floor designs. Rooms have doorways that you must move through to get to other rooms. There are tokens for cages, placed randomly in rooms at the beginning, which have to be revealed as a game action. Then the requirements to unlock it are known to all, and the race is on to acquire the right objects. Object tokens are also placed randomly, face-up, in the rooms before the game. You also get a deck of cards, which allow such actions as extra moves, stealing, moving objects between rooms, and moving the guard to any room. Each turn you get to use a maximum of 3 actions, from a choice of 6, in any order and frequency you like. There is a handy reference card for each player. You also get some rubber/plastic monkeys and a guard figure.
I received this game as a gift and thought it looked pretty silly, but it is great. Strategy and planning are required, as you try to get the most valuable cages opened before anyone else. You will have to use your human brain, but you also get to reach back to your primitive side and resort to monkey violence when strategy isn't working. I've played with only 2 players so far, and it is just fine that way. I'm sure that 3 or 4 would be even better. If you don't enjoy interactive confrontational games, avoid the monkey games. Monkeys don't play well together. Gaining a victory in a peaceful manner is admirable. Winning by being sneaky and using brute force is fun. Do you want to be admired, or have fun? We're talking monkeys here. What do you think the answer is?

I love this game. We just got it from Goodwill, and me and my sister played it tonight (my sister is 15.) We loved it! But the board was hard to look at and find stuff. This is an awesome game! BTW The ages are 9 to 90 LOL but anyone can play it! Buy this game and you'll adore it. Bootleggers Review

Bootleggers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Eagle Games' "Bootleggers" is an area control, economic engine board game set in the era of prohibition. Designed by the same team that brought you "Kayak Chaos" (Don Beyer, Ray Eifler and Steve Gross), Bootleggers pits players against one another in an attempt to generate the most money off the sales of alcohol.
There are six phases in each turn. The game repeats these phases in order until someone has acquired enough money to win. Players play "muscle" cards. The player who spends the most value in muscle gets to play first. Players may claim more "boys" which allow them to control a speakeasy. Players may claim a truck so they can ship their moonshine. Or players may take an upgrade--something that usually improves their stills production or improves a speakeasy's consumption.
The game has lots of neat bits. There are different colored armies for each player. Each soldier, if you will, is a 20's era gangster with a suit, tie and tommy gun. Players will place these boys on one of the speakeasies. Once enough boys are on a speakeasy space, that speakeasy is open for business, ie, you may sell your moonshine there. The player who has the most boys on that speakeasy gets the profits from it.
Stills produce crates of moonshine (little wooden cubes). You roll a couple of dice for how much production you will obtain. With the right upgrades, you can roll several dice instead.
There are several plastic trucks that can actually hold the moonshine crates. You will need to manage your shipping constraint if you want to maximize your profits.
After production of moonshine, players are free to wheel and deal. If you have too much moonshine but not enough trucks, sell off your extra moonshine to one of your opponents. If you have first dibs on a speakeasy because you control it, convince your opponents to sell their excess stock to you or they will not be allowed to sell their wares.
The g-men are on your trail. Starting on game turn 4, the police figure is placed on the player with the highest still production. The police can shut you down for a turn so you really want to keep the heat off of you.
The game continues until a player accumulates $100,000. The player with the most money is declared the winner.
Bootleggers is a fun game. I didn't think I would like it because I'm not big on the theme (20's era gangster). But it's actually a very fun game. In fact, I really really love the theme! There are a couple of caveats however. This is not a gateway game. It's a bit complicated for the nongamer. And there is a lot of randomness. For a game of its length, Bootleggers has too much randomness. The dice determine production and consumption. This could make the game feel like a 2 hour event that really boils down to one final dice roll. Other than the randomness factor, I recommend Bootleggers to any serious board gamer. Even if you don't like the theme, give it a try!

Ubongo: Duel Review

My husband and I both like to play Euro style boardgames and this was a pleasant little surprise. For a game designed for two players it offers a lot of durable exciting game play. The best way to describe it is something like tetris. There is a design that each player races to complete using only a certain number of select pieces. The person who completes it first shouts "Ubongo" and advances their idol. The first one to reach the end wins! We like the 4 player version of this game too, but it's nice to have a smaller (portable) version for when it is just the two of us. We've taken this game out with us on date nights and played while waiting for dinner.
I like that you can play the boards over and over without memorizing how to place the pieces. This is especially true is you take a break from the game for awhile before playing it again. Setup is simple, rules are easy, game play is swift and you don't have to be a strategic genius to play it. If you're looking for a fun game to introduce your wife into Euro style games I'd recommend this one 100%.

Gold Digger Game Review

Gold Digger Game
Average Reviews:

So, it isn't the 1800's anymore. You probably don't even spend hours a day in the mountains with a pick axe and dirt sifter trying to find your fortune. No need to worry though, you can get a glimpse of the excitement of the gold rush with the Out of the Box Games creation GOLD DIGGER.
Game Summary: Stake your claims to six different gold mines as 30 whimsical wild west characters (such as Daniel Boom and Daisy Crocket) while you and your opponents decide how much gold each mine will contain. As always, the player with the most gold at the end of the game wins.
Game Play: The directions are very straightforward with a minimal number of rules to remember. It shouldn't take anymore than 10 minutes to get started after opening the box. GOLD DIGGER is essentially a card game in which each player is dealt 3 cards at random from a 60 card deck. Cards are either character cards which correspond in color to one of six gold mines to which they may stake a claim, or gold cards which represent variable amounts of gold (including Fool's Gold which is worth 0 bags of gold) that are strategically placed inside each mine. The game set-up also includes 2 small game boards which each have 3 mines by which characters and gold cards are placed. Each player may only play one of their cards per turn and then must draw another card from the deck until all 60 cards are used.
Strategy: There is a surprising amount of forethought involved in each move for those who wish to be master of the mines. Multiple claim staking and the luck of the draw make for endless possibilities. You decide whether you should stake a claim to an empty mine or maybe lure your opponents to a mine that you will fill with fool's gold (after all, once a claim is staked it can't be moved). GOLD DIGGER is highly recommended for all those family night gamers whose young prospectors are ready for a challenge. Even those who are more experienced enjoy games like GOLD DIGGER that engage us with their simplicity and entertain us with their unique style.

Gold Digger sets anxious prospectors on a quest to find their fortunes in gold. Picking the claims that will yield a cornucopia of riches ... but beware of fool's gold! The player that outwits all of the others, wins!Originally published as Goldrausch, it was republished in 2002 as Gold Digger by Out of the Box.Tactic re-published the game as Wapi, with a Native American re-theming (Wapi is apparently Cree for "the lucky one"). Rather than staking claims to mines, the game was now about dividing a hoard of silver. This edition is a de-luxe treatment with a board and plastic totems with which to make claims.

This is not a hard game to learn, rules are well written with examples. My 13 year old daughter, and even 8 year old can play it competitively. If all you know if Life, Sorry or Monopoly, then you need to step up and try a wider variety of games. The game lasts under half hour and has some strategy and luck with it. You are basically trying to win by gaining the most victory points. You do that by upgrading your airship with improved cards. These cards that you play on your board give you the ability to roll certain dice, white, black or red dice. The better your cards, the better your dice, the more likelihood you have of getting the cards with the bonus points on them. That isn't a total picture of the game, but a very basic outline.
You can read more about it at other game sites.

Mag Blast is the best table top game I have ever played! It's a space combat card game, but unlike other card games all you will ever need to play is in this box. Each player chooses an alien race with a specific ability. Cards are dealt and galactic mayhem begins!
Basically, the object of the game is to defend your flagship while trying to destroy your opponent's flagship. Surrounding your flagship are smaller spaceships that do combat with your enemy's fleet. By placing a card, you can shoot lasers of various destructive powers, launch fighters and bombers, repair your damaged fleet, lay a mine field, pirate your enemy's ships and even call in reinforcements. The artwork on the cards are really cool to look at too!
The action is fast, fun and furious!!! The game is easy to learn and can be played in less than a half hour. The game is awesome and addictive, I find myself thinking about it in my mind when it's been awhile since I've last played it. Overall, I can't think of a better gift to be found under a sci-fi gamer's Christmas tree!
