(More customer reviews)Players are each operators of a small deep sea salvage company in 1899 on the island of Key Largo, trying to raise as much sunken treasure within 10 days (turns) before hurricanes end the diving season. Before the invention of scuba tanks, underwater diving required lengthy hoses connected to air compressors on ships, and players will hire experienced divers and purchase lengths of hoses to allow their divers to search deeper and deeper. The dive sites (piles of 5 cards around the board) are divided into shallow dive sites(no hose required), medium (one hose), and deep dive sites(two hoses). The deeper your diver or team of divers go (up to 3 divers per player) the more lucrative the treasures become- gold, artifacts, goods, even jewels- but beware at the deeper depths lurk sea monsters capable of devouring your hapless divers! Fortunately, divers can arm themselves with tridents to fend off the monsters, and weights to continue diving for more treasure; all of these can be bought at the equipment store.
Assuming a successful dive, players can then head to the market to sell off their treasures; the game includes a simple but elegant device to determine prices by how many players are trying to sell at one time. With their new cash, players can buy more equipment, or head over to the tavern to hire another diver for their team, buy a round of drinks to learn about favorable dive sites, or even hire the thief to steal treasure from their opponents. Another option is to take tourists out dolphin watching to earn a bit of cash and an advantageous card which can turn the tide in your favor. After 10 days (days are divided into a morning and afternoon action), whichever player has accumulated the most wealth in cash and treasure wins!
- Excellent theme and beautiful design with high quality, durable parts.
- This was the last game by designer Paul Randles, who also designed the excellent Pirate's Cove, sort of a pre-cursor.
- Playable by 3 to 5 players
- Suitable for ages 9 and up.
