(More customer reviews)This is a cute little game: Each player a circle of 12 princesses, placing poem cards on them to win points. Gameplay is fairly quick (though there's a fair amount of addition to calculate the point totals), and you can plan your next move during your opponents' turns, so you're never totally uninvolved. Once everyone is up to speed on the rules (which takes a while--the rulebook is far from perfectly clear), a game lasts a nice, brief half hour.
But the game gets old quickly as the novelty wears off. There's no deep strategy, no reason to think more than one move ahead; most of the time, the cards you're dealt tell you what to do next. And players who score a few points early tend to keep their lead for the whole game.
There are also a few production issues: Everything in the box is absolutely beautiful, but fragile. The cards scratch easily. The tokens have a plastic film that starts to peel off right away.
Of course, Genji is inexpensive for such an elaborate card game; but all in all, I can't quite recommend it.
