(More customer reviews)We got this game about 10 years ago, and I've just brought it out of the basement so we can begin playing again. (I'm the board game enthusiast in the house...but my husband can be coerced into playing once in a while!)
For those unfamiliar, Outburst is a "blurt out" game that comes with about 800 topics (400 cards since they're 2-sided), 6 blue pass chips, a a card viewer, sand timer, two dice, and a scoring device with slides. The object of the game is to reach 60 points before the other person or team.
One of the die features numbers from 0-9 while the other is a green die with 1, 2, and 3 on it. Players roll the dice at the beginning of every turn. The blue die refers to the answer # while the green die refers to the bonus points you get IF you happen to get that particular answer correct. So you may get extra bonus points in addition to the amount of questions you correct guess on your turn.
Say, for example, that you roll a 6 with the blue die and a 2 with the green. You then pick the card with the topic WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE POLICE. Now, you can't see the answers because they're obscured (kinda like the color blind test you take when getting your driver's license). The card viewer has a red 'decoder' window that helps the other person see the answers.
So let's say you answer: Fuzz, Cops, The Heat, and Pigs (4 out of 10 possible answers). They match the answers, so you get 4 points. Fuzz happens to be the #6 answer, so you get 2 ADDITIONAL points (6 total).
There are two plastic sliding "arrows" on the side for keeping track of the points, so this game is very portable.
You have 3 pass chips that you can use during the game. If you think the topic is too hard, you can pass...BUT you MUST play the next card drawn. Then, your opponent must play the passed card. This can sometimes come down to psychology because if you think you may be awful at a topic, you have to decide if the person may be GOOD at it. If they are, they can really rack up the points! It may be better to risk only getting a few then your opponent getting 10 or more! Not only that, you may pass what you feel is a tough topic, only to get a card with a TOUGHER topic (which happened to my husband the other night!)
I really enjoy this game and can't wait to get the newer Remixed version! If you're a fan of word games like Scattegories, Taboo, and Password, you'll likely love this game!
