(More customer reviews)My husband and I bought Carcassonne back when it included this 12 tile river expansion. We bought the game new for $30. Now it's closer to $20, with another $8 or so for the first river. Friends who play the game with us absolutely LOVE it but are disappointed when they find out the river must now be purchased separately. However, they have ALL bothered to buy it because it makes the game MUCH more fun and interesting. Plus the price difference now makes it almost a moot point.
You don't necessarily need THIS river - the second river expansion (The River II) would do just as well. We play with both the first and second river. It allows for a wider variety of games (every game is different, though). It also expands the board to make it more interesting. I can't imagine playing the game without it. Buy the river. You almost need it to get the full effect of the game. There are other expansions, too, but the river is a MUST have if you're going to buy Carcassonne. You won't be sorry.

This is the original river expansion for Carcassonne. It was included for a time in the basic game but will be removed to make it available separately for those who want it. It is 12 tiles each with a portion of the river. It replaces the starting tile for the basic game in game play.
